Shippin' Out Jan. 17-23: Dark Void, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

Capcom's jetpack-powered action game and Konami's spook-fest headline a light week on the retail front; Bejeweled Twist DS, Vandal Hearts 360 also on tap.

In October 2007, Capcom announced an all-new action franchise, Dark Void. A year and a half later, the company made the very bold prediction that the franchise would sell at least 2 million copies. Such a figure would put the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game among the Japanese publisher's other hit franchises of recent vintage, such as Lost Planet and Dead Rising.

Capcom hopes Dark Void will be its next breakout original IP.

The proof will be in the proverbial pudding this week, when the already-big-screen-bound Dark Void goes on sale in North America. It is the first project from developer Airtight Games, home to several former members of shuttered Crimson Skies developer FASA Studios. The third-person shooter will have players engage in three-dimensional combat powered by jetpacks, a gameplay formula that has earned it the nickname "The Rocketeer in Space." It sees humankind fighting The Watchers, an alien race banished by humanity to an alternate universe after its members grew too powerful a la the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica.

Those not fond of airborne sci-fi derring-do will have a chance to get their horror on with Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for the PlayStation 2 and PSP. The M-rated adventure game sees players once again return to the titular haunted town, this time to track down the missing daughter of protagonist Harry Mason. The "reimagining" of the original Silent Hill was released for the Wii in December and scored solid reviews.

Rounding out the week are a passel of DS games, including the Dark Void spin-off Dark Void Zero, Bejeweled Twist, and Glory of Heracles, which was featured on a recent episode of Today on the Spot. PopCap's Bejeweled Twist will also puzzle Nintendo's handheld, which sold 11.2 million units last year in the US.
