Labeouf, who was raised by a single mom before earning his emancipation at age 15, was arrested for the first time in grade school, for stealing a pair of Nike shoes from a department store.

During the filming of Disney's Even Stevens, Labeouf stayed with his father in a hotel in Burbank and was surrounded by some not-very-Disney-like activities.

"There were drugs everywhere--marijuana, cocaine, heroin," he said about his father's friends. "[My dad] gave me my first joint when I was probably 11 or 12."

Labeouf added that he felt like an outsider among his fellow Disney child stars.

"They would invite the Hilary Duffs and Miley Cyruses to go to the Jonas Brothers concert, and I'd be there with my friends. But we were outsiders. It felt distant," he said.

You should really read the full Variety interview; it is stuffed with incredible insight into Labeouf's fascinating life and career. It's also revealed in the interview that he could have starred in Suicide Squad.

Labeouf will be seen next in this year's American Honey.
