Now Playing: Shenmue 3 Delayed To 2019 - GS News Update

Shenmue III has been delayed. The highly anticipated new installment in Yu Suzuki's beloved series was originally slated to release for PS4 and PC later this year, but publisher Deep Silver has announced that the game has now been pushed back into 2019.

According to Deep Silver, the delay is to give the development team more time to further refine the game. In an update on its website, the publisher said, "The extra time will be used to polish the quality of the game even further, to the high standards it deserves and release the product in the best possible timeframe."

The delay doesn't come as much of a surprise; despite being slated to launch in 2018, we've heard and seen little of Shenmue III thus far. A recent batch of screenshots showcased some improved character models, which were criticized for looking stiff and emotionless in the game's first teaser trailer.

Shenmue III was first announced during Sony's E3 2015 press conference. A Kickstarter campaign launched shortly after the title was revealed, and it would go on to become the most-backed video game in Kickstarter history, raising more than $6.3 million from nearly 70,000 backers.

While we may have to wait longer to see where Ryo's journey takes him, fans will soon have a chance to relive the previous two installments in the series. Sega recently announced it is releasing a Shenmue I & II collection on PS4, Xbox One, and PC later this year. Sega says the package features "fully scalable screen resolution, choice of modern or classic control schemes, PC graphics options, an updated user interface, and the option to enjoy either the original Japanese or English voiceovers."

Good, and I’m sure it’ll be delayed again. Polish that game up, we can wait.

Shocker! Not. Lol. You had to have been delusional to think this was coming out this year. Not surprised that they gave you Shenmue 1 and 2 while you wait. Looking forward to the game in 2019.

@LoveBird-: "They" had nothing to do with Shenmue 1 and 2 being re-released.

@GinsuVictim: I find that very hard to believe. But even if it didn't have anything to do with the re-releases, who cares? Comment still stands. This game wasn't coming out this year and people will be playing 1 and 2 while waiting.

@LoveBird-: How is it hard to believe? It's two different companies who aren't working together.

This new is far less crippling to hear now that 1 & 2 are coming to current gen consoles. As long as I live long enough to kill Lan Di I am okay with the delay. This game needs to be befitting of its first two entries, which are two of my all-time favorite games ever. Big shoes to fill, get it right Yu :)

deep silver sold there games saint row series, dead island series, metro series . And deep silver delayed Shenmue 3 and in money trouble . I like say deep Silver out of touch .

@playstationzone: Deep Silver is now overseen by THQ Nordic. THQ is supposedly taking a hands-off approach to Koch Media, but they did suggest at one point that they will guide all of their game divisions in some way. A delay for polish isn't like DS at all, so I have to assume that's what is happening here.

Taking the time to improve a game is a good thing. I'd much rather put up with a longer wait than have a game rushed and unfinished like a lot of games of late.

good grief take the time to polish the characters themselves... they look like wax figures with no emotion. What is this PS3 era?

@solidsolo: i think you meant ps2 era, but yea, the models look rough to say the least. although, i feel like part of that might be intentional -- to capture the look and feel of the original games.

I can already hear a collective “sigh” from gamers across the globe.

With that being said I am glad that they are taking the time to “dot every I and cross every T.” It would be real easy for a developer to just churn out an installment in a franchise that has a huge and loyal following just for the sake of capitalizing on a name or nostalgia so the team taking the extra time to make sure that fans who have been literally waiting for over a decade are somewhat satisfied is a good if not admirable trait.

Oh dear ANOTHER Game that ISN'T on Xbox X 0.

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58

@Terminator95: Don't you mean another fake PS4 exclusive because I can almost guarantee this will release on the Xbox One, just like No Man's Sky and the Crash Bandicoot collection. Just another SONY timed exclusive pretending to be a true one due to some NDA they have preventing the developers from mentioning that fact. They've used this scam for years now.

@dlCHIEF58: were yakuza 0/6, nier automata, persona 5, ni no kuni 2 and nioh also fake ps4 console exclusives?

Avatar image for GinsuVictim

@Xristophoros: Persona 5 isn't a PS4 exclusive, seeing as how I play it on PS3.

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58
dlCHIEF58

@Xristophoros: Not yet nor did I state or imply they were. But it wouldn't surprise me in the least if a few didn't cross over eventually (Yakuza or Nier Automata), the rest who cares since they would not sell that well as they didn't do all that great on the PS4 either. They sold decent, but were not system seller numbers by any means (less than 2% of PS4 users buying said games). Nier Automata might remain exclusive if Platinum is holding a grudge over the Scalebound cancellation and decide they like being petty over making more money.

Unless SONY specifically states it is an exclusive, don't bank on it as they will pretend it is one and remain silent when asked for clarification as they have done for YEARS. Even at E3 presentations they've pulled this crap announcing games (showcasing games for their systems while keeping the developer/publisher silent on competing versions for weeks afterwards), even those which were multiplatform at launch (Diablo 3 is but one example...and they pulled that crap TWICE with that game).

Shenmue III and the Final Fantasy VII remake are announced as coming to PS4 and PC, but no where is it mentioned those are exclusive by SONY. Both these are likely examples of them pretending a timed exclusives are true ones by remaining silent on the subject. Has happened before and as long as they have a flock supporting them they will continue with that deceptive practice.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@dlCHIEF58: platinum games has no say in the matter as to where nier is ported to. that is up to s-e. sony never stated the game was a ps4 console exclusive, so not sure who you think is "pretending" here. it is just assumed at this point since it has been close to 1.5 years since nier launched. 99% of japanese developed games would sell poorly on the x1, so there is no desire to port them over. as an xbox gamer, shouldn't you be used to this by now?

also, in case you didn't know, there is a badge on the box of selected ps4 games where it says: "only on playstation" or "ps4 console exclusive", all but confirming certain games will never see the light of day on xbox. one such game is yakuaza kiwami. yakuza 0/6 also have the "ps4 console exclusive" badge on their respected boxes. pc is not out of the question for those titles, though.

How every one feels about Bethesda is how I feel about deep silver. Everything they touch is so glitchy. I couldn't even finish homefront thanks to a glitch

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58

@aproxinate: But Deep Silver is only a publisher, not a developer so your view makes no sense. They do not make any of the games, only fund and distribute them.

How uncharacteristic of Deep Silver to care about polish and quality and stuff...

...and that's because Deep Silver is dead! They're overseen by THQ Nordic now.
