Shenmue 3 Actually Exists, Is Out Now

Patience is a virtue.

Shenmue 3 has finally arrived, putting an end to an almost 20 year Shenmue dry spell. The series debuted on the Dreamcast and the most recent game was released in 2001. It was always planned as a larger narrative, but fans of the series have been waiting a long time to see it return.

The story follows Ryo Hazuki, and a recent launch trailer showed some nostalgic elements as well as continuing story hooks like the antagonist Lan Di. The first two games weren't commercial successes, but the franchise has remained a cult favorite for its portrayal of daily life in Japan and a grounded story.

Even aside from the long wait for a sequel, Shenmue 3 itself has been a long time coming. The Kickstarter opened on June 15, 2015, and quickly broke Kickstarter records--with an assist from Sony's E3 press conference. Original director Keiji Okayasu returned to direct the revival project. It's available on both PS4 and PC, though its Epic Games Store exclusivity on PC has been the cause of some controversy.

Reviews of the game are sparse so far, with only user reviews available on GameSpot sister site Metacritic. Still, the Kickstarter success suggests the fan demand is high, so success here could warrant further sequels and deliver on the series' goal of being a multi-part epic. If you need to catch up, a remaster of Shenmue 1 & 2 were released last year.

I think epic studios and Sony are bad for business, especially especially with their proprietary SSD and their what ever it's called disk cartridges, games should be the focal point of backwards, it's like traveling from America, Europe ect to Japan, however you must transfer to Singapore to get to Japan, while longer (it's the same notion as paying more for a direct flight to Japan, just by paying more means you have access at a quicker speed (but gaming Isn't the same because it doesn't matter how much you pay) so when you get of at Singapore your exploring on the tv what others are doing in Japan before your arrival even begins as those who commuted directly there went via non stop over, and the cost is a pittance) as it's something some countries offer be it Los Angeles, UK, Sydney, Europe.

So what does this mean, it means when it comes to shenmue (just like death stranding) it's better to watch it on YouTube or twitch, why well because that's how fragmented the industry is on coercion rather cohesion.

A small pittence yet 18 years to one person is 10 minutes of views on twitch all because of seperation. But it's fascinating how the evolutionary wheel that spun in the past under different conventions stil continues today. You gotta love capitalism.

Thank goodness Yakuza finally coming to pc and Xbox.

14 year old me has been waiting for this day. That being said its definitely a niche series. It never was for everyone. It's going to be interesting to see how younger players react to the controls and dialog. I appreciate how Suzuki kept its distinct style when he could have easily gone the Yakuza route. I just hope he will be able to close out the series (and that he doesn't get too ambitious and go for a ridiculous number of chapters)

As someone who never played the Shenmue games, i like what I'm seeing here. Yes the game looks outdated & has poor facial animations, but the level design & setting sure reminds me of Sleeping Dogs (which was epic). I'm gonna give it a shot.

Was up till 4 AM playing it last night. It'll definitely be Death-Stranding levels of divisiveness and I'm sure us fans will get laughed off the internet for a few weeks, but I am very happy with Shenmue III right now.

I watched it on Twitch. And it’s a snore fest. The animation and dialogue is stiff as wood. Unlike the Yakuza series which hooked me up from start to end, always wondering what’s coming up next, this piece of epic trash couldn’t even keep me focused for 3 minutes.

@Baconstrip78: Shenmue is the grandfather to Yakuza, it's virtual fighter mixed in with a RPG type world based around a chunk of a living breathing world.

@Baconstrip78: Today there is Yakuza so playing Shenmue is like going backwards.

Yakuza is coming to XBOX Game Pass BTW.

I am sure there are people who would rather play Mario 64 than Mario Odyssey.

@ginxeno: "Live in that era." Like when they game came out? They were massive commercial failures and some of the biggest disappointments in gaming history. I remember the one day coming home from school.

1 day. Thats what 99 percent of people that played this gave it before they almost died of boredome.

@basketballfan: hahaha love this! Dude I remember getting Shenmue in the post when I was young(er), sooo happy to finally be playing this incredible, unmissable, totally immersive, utterly ground breaking game at last! However my excitement changed to tears after several hours of wondering about the first town area saying "do you remember that day?" To EVERYONE. So damn dull, I get that's its a big deal to some (sort of?) and have at it guys, good for you, but personally this was nothing more than a very expensive way to play Space Harrier on the Dreamcast... luckily a few weeks later I got PowerStone and the balance of the universe was restored, phew!

@G-Corleone: I think everyone is still nostalgic for super Mario 64. I thought the latest one was boring too. I mean I'm nostalgic for zelda but I can still see that botw was pretty trash considering how long we waited. Really just want oot and Majoras mask remade.

@moviespot: Never understood the crazy for Zelda or Mario personally. Its been pretty much the same story for both just with Zelda 35 years later the fans are finally getting an actual sequel with Breath of the Wild 2. Just feel like Zelda fans have been cheated out of what Zelda could have been.

@stealthy1: yeah I definitely agree with that. Nintendo have made a great portable console but that doesn't stop me and my friends from constantly bagging the shit out of their games. They're so far behind when it comes to formula.

As big of a fan as I am of the first two games, not even this will get me to use the Epic store. If I need to wait another year for it to land on Steam then so be it... I've waited this long for a third installment anyway so what's another year?

I'm just mad it's a Sony/PC exclusive. I was an original Dreamcast Shenmue gamer, and the last thing I wanted to do when Sega went down was to jump onto the Sony platform, so naturally, Microsoft got my money. I've been with Xbox ever since. I know that's all just me having fanboy nonsense, but now I'm ready 18 years later to finish my Shenmue and now I gotta get a Playstation or a PC rig, not gonna happen. Oh well, at least Xbox is finally getting Yakuza after all these years.

@kingfish1984: Sega, Capcom, KoeiTecmo, and plenty other 3rd party studios combined produced more exclusive on Playstation platform than xbox ever output. Dont even want to know why you so blinded to not buy console give you the most value.

@solid_snake1461: As I said in my original post, I was a Dreamcast Shenmue player back in the day. If you are to tell me that the console or PC you've chosen has every game you've ever wanted and there's not one single game on another platform you don't wish you had, I say you're full of it. Just sayin.

@kingfish1984: why don't you like Sony? I've never really been a fan boy I've always just given my money to the company I'm going to receive the most benefit from. Of course I have my console preferences but at the end of the day, as consumers the only reason to choose a console at all is for your own benefit.
