Launch problems for H1Z1, Sony's open-world zombie survival horror game, have dragged on into the sixth day, with the game now completely offline as a major patch is being introduced.

John Smedley, the president of Sony Online Entertainment, apologised on Twitter after a new bug slipped into the code while the team was trying to fix other problems. Fans found that the game's servers fell offline on Tuesday at 2pm Pacific, then went back online several hours later, and went back down again moments after that.

At the time of going to press, the game is still offline and Smedley--having worked a punishing schedule to combat the launch problems--has decided to try and resolve the new problems as opposed to re-introducing the old patch.

Meanwhile, the game's popularity has led to extensive queuing, which can last more than an hour, while Sony Online Entertainment is trying to invest in more servers for the EU territory. The burden of its popularity has led to numerous in-game bugs, to the detriment of features such as frame-rate and network stability.

The newest update, when its own bugs are removed and goes live, is expected to come with the following fixes:

  • Fixed issue with loot rules which were preventing spawning items inside containers
  • Metal Gate should now work properly
  • Floating Arrows should no longer cause damage or obstruct vehicles.
  • Structures are now more resistant to damage
  • Zombies should no longer slide or attack while knocked down
  • Dragging a stack of items that was too large to fit in your inventory would not move any of the stack. It now tops off as much as it can fit
  • Fixed issue where the inventory wouldn't accept the maximum it could hold when picking up items from proximity/containers.
  • The dew collector should work now, seriously
  • Adjusted many items so that they will stack in the inventory properly
  • Added a recipe for a Metal Door that is more durable than a wooden door
  • Additional server list sorting options are now available
  • The inventory option "Delete" has been removed
  • “Drop”, “Unload” and “Place” inventory options have been removed from proximity items
  • Rebalanced melee damage, including fists
  • Enabled melee headshot damage for NPC's and players Have feedback on the new melee changes? Post them inJimmy's thread here
  • Fixed issue with the Runamok Toxic Cavern container not working
  • Stagnant water can now be purified in barbecue.
  • Bear meat can now be cooked on a barbecue.
  • Rabbit stew can now be cooked. It now requires cooked rabbit meat instead of raw rabbit meat.
  • Hammers, wrenches, and combat knives can now be melted down into bars inside of a furnace.
  • Some larger items like the machete and AR15 now yield more metal bars when melted in a furnace.
  • Animal traps now take damage.
  • The animal trap recipe now require four nails.
  • Fixed picking overlapping blackberry bushes where players sometimes had crouch to pick them successfully
  • Fixed event tickets so that tickets found in the world are granted and the name and count show up properly

Im not the one to complain, but why in the world did H1Z1's devs decide to charge people $20 & $40 to play a free to play game when the knew damn well it was going to be a glitch-fest? Oh yea, lets charge them money and they can get pissed while we can get the help from the customers to help work on the millions of bugs in seems like over the past 6 months of their sharing, and channels, and introductory of everybody in the building working on this disaster that i still WANT TO PLAY! I can't help it, it still is something i'd like to try, i just don't get the charging people.... except for the obvious pursuit of money, which i'd rather pay for the game versus the little micro transactions.

The author must be under the impression that this is a full release "launch" The cost associated is the asking price for access to the alpha phase of this game-in-the-making.

wait a sec... people PAY to TEST a F2P game? 0.o

Avatar image for rafa6

Of course thats a genius move if your a developer, I however wouldn't have the guts to charge people for an unfinished product unless this was some kind of early access that would put you way ahead of others when the game releases ( I haven't checked this game out so maybe I'm wrong and thats exactly what this is). Game testing used to be a payed job but nowadays its just cheaper to do a Beta event and have the testing done for free, asking people to pay in order to test something it's a bit too much in my opinion but maybe Im wrong.

Not a launch. They may be charging people to playtest an Alpha on Early Access but it is not a launched game. Article loses credibility right there.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Fair point. A lot of people might not know it's early access and these headlines get reposted in various places. The article doesn't make an effort to point out that it is early access.

Person who wrote this article really needs to change the title and the content of the article..

The game has not launched it is in early access alpha testing.. there will be bugs including gmae breaking bugs..
The devs have been very active with the patches and the game has been running stable since saturday yes of course there are some issues in games.. thats why we are testing it to find the issues.

Devs deployed a patch yesterday thay coursed some major issues so took the servers down to try and fix..

This is what testing is all about.. If you cant handle that an alpha test will have bugs and go down now and then simply dont alpha test games wait until they are finished.

This article really needs to be removed and someone that knows what alpha testing is about should make a new one.

<< LINK REMOVED >> $20? Not much for an early access game.

Avatar image for Darkeus

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> $20 Dollars for a game that will be Free to Play when it is released. In that context, it is expensive to have the privilege to pay for a F2P game Alpha Test.

What Engine does this use?

It looks terrible. As in, it looks like Pre-Alpha Arma 2, with practicaly the same engine.

Rather strange for a game to look like this, from a giant company.

Avatar image for Pikdum

Wow that's some flawed logic. If I sold you a green banana. With bold disclaimer that it isn't ripe, I would smack you if you bitched it wasn't ripe. Check the steam page for the game. The disclaimer is very prominent.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> still nobody force people to buy it. Its unfinished early access game full of bugs that will be F2P when its done. I just dont get it why people pay for early access and whine about the problems. You actually pay for testing the game while its in development. Dont like it??? dont buy it then...wait until its finished.

I know its buggy code that has caused this and not hardware but... Why don't Sony just invest in their existing server and network infrastructure to improve the performance of PS4 games, instead of blowing all our money up the wall creating PS Now to stream ps3 games we've already played!!! >:-(

Avatar image for peterhorner1867

Probably cos one makes money and the other doesn't. You can't charge for improving servers bit u can charge for more games.

Welcome abroad the Sony train!

If only people could play the game on their own, without needing other people or online servers, kind of like an offline single player game... I think they existed once, or is that just an urban myth now.

how the hell does john smedley still have a job at SOE?

after what he did to star wars galaxies, he should have been sacked on the spot then stoned on the streets.

now he releases this pos, this game is even worse than infestation; survivor stories

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> They like paying for that "privilege" as well? Companies used to pay people to do this. Biggest scam in video games, pay to playtest a game....

Avatar image for Caldrin
Caldrin

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Companies still pay people to do internal testing but there is no way they could employ enough people to test on this scale.

Testing on this scale is one of the best things a company can do when developing a game it means more bugs will be found and squashed before the game is released and that means a much better game on release.

If you don't want to be part of the testing process then its simple don't be just wait for the game to be released what does it matter to you that someone else has paid £15 to help develop the game?

Avatar image for Darkeus
Darkeus

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You do realize that a lot of people who bought this have no clue it is a Free to Play game in the future right? And if they want to test the game, then do like many MMO developers have and give out free keys for a free to play game. Charging 20 bucks is ridiculous.

What does it matter to me? Because it signals to the WHOLE industry that gamers are dumb enough to fall for this kind of scam and that they can continue to do it. Stuff like this affects EVERY gamer, not just the whales out to spend money.

When consumers make stupid purchases like this, more companies try to get away with it, making the consumer atmosphere worse. We have enough scams and overhype in video games. We don't need SOE pulling this crap.

The real question is: Why don't you care that gamers are falling for blatant scams?

Avatar image for Caldrin
Caldrin

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> This is not a scam at all.. it has been a well known fact since they said H1Z1 was on the cards that it would be a free 2 play game but have an early access option of $20 pretty sure that was all in the first statement about the game and many many others since.

If gamers are just too stupid to read then its not the companies fault its the country they live in for not educating them.

So why do SOE charge $20 for early access, well yes they want to make a bit of cash early on they are out to make money afterall that is the point of running a business but they also want to offer people a chance to get into the testing process of the game early but they dont jsut want to open the gates to everyone in the world. If they pushed H1Z1 out as early access then then prob nearly every PC gamer in the would would have downlaoded it and coursed even more problems.

Also its not like they are just taking your $20 and only giving you access to the game, that $20 gives you 3 event tickets, and 2 crates.

This is in no way a blatent scam and I am not sure how you see it that way.

Avatar image for Darkeus
Darkeus

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> That is why you have a closed Alpha key giveaway and wow, problem solved without charging people 20 bucks for access to a buggy, unfinished game that will be Free to play. The whole idea of charging for a game that will be free to play is the scam. Don't know how you can't see that.

And yeah, it comes with some extra crap. And? Airdrops are contested anyway and is that stuff actually worth 20?

Again, they could easily playtest this with a closed Alpha without Early Access. And SOE doesn't need the damn money. So yes, I still see it as a greedy, money grab scam.

Avatar image for Caldrin
Caldrin

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Problem with Giveaways is that not everyone will get access.. this gives people who want to test the game an option to do soand its as simple as that.

If you dont want to do it then guess what you dont have to. There have also been a few sites running competitions give away access as well if thats your thing.

They could paly test with a closed alpha but they would not have as many people testing it.. the more people testing the more bugs get reported and hopefulyl get fixed.. that basically means the game will be better on release.

At the end of the day this is not a scam as the people that are doing it get something out of it.. It might not be worth $20 to you but it is to other people.
