Selena Gomez Is Suing A Mobile Game For Stealing Her Likeness

Actress and singer Selena Gomez has filed a $10 million lawsuit against the Chinese development company Guangzhou Feidong Software Technology Co. and MutantBox Interactive Limited for their mobile game, Clothes Forever - Styling Game, for stealing her likeness.

The entire premise of the game is that the player goes on virtual shopping sprees with celebrities, but at least one of the celebrities featured in the game didn’t actually give permission for their public image to be used.

Gomez isn’t the only celebrity you can go shopping with, with the Apple App Store page touting that players can “Interact with the most beautiful models and celebrities; the likes of Kardashian, Gigi, Beyonce, Taylor, and more will be dropping by and asking for YOUR fashion advice!”

According to Gomez’s lawsuit, she claims that one of the characters is obviously based on her and that she never agreed for the company to use her likeness.

"Defendants never requested, consulted, or informed Gomez regarding the use of any of her publicity rights in connection with the Game," the lawsuit states. "Nor, if asked, would Gomez have consented to such use for the Game, which apparently relies on the unsavory practice of luring its users to make in-game purchases in amounts as much as $99.99 to fund imaginary spending in the Game and unlock features.”

This isn’t the first time a mobile game has been sued for using assets without permission, with Bethesda suing the Westworld mobile game in 2019 due to the game being a blatant rip off of their own game, Fallout Shelter.
