Select PS5 Games Are Available For $50 Ahead Of Launch, In A Roundabout Way

Sony is selling PS4 and PS5 editions of games coming out this holiday, but it sure seems like you'll want to just buy the PS4 version.

Hoping to play 2020's biggest upcoming games on both your current gaming hardware and the upcoming next-gen consoles? Well, console manufacturers and game publishers are making the transition a bit smoother than usual. Microsoft is unifying its Xbox One and Xbox Series X physical discs by offering one "Xbox" version that is compatible with both platforms, touting how backward-compatible the Series X will be with other Xbox console games. Meanwhile, pre-order listings for PS5 games show two different boxes, one for next-gen and one for PS4, but plenty of PS4 games will have free upgrades to PS5, which will probably be a little confusing for those who are window-shopping at major retailers at launch. The distinction also has the potential to cost you more money if you aren't careful.

PS5 pre-order listings for a trio of upcoming Ubisoft games--Watch Dogs Legion, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and Far Cry 6--are currently live on Amazon (though Watch Dogs Legion is currently selling for the full $60 at Amazon). Curiously, the PS5 versions are full price at $60, while the PS4 listings of these games are currently discounted to $49.94.

Since you can buy any of these three games on PS4, insert the disc into your PS5 to get the free upgrade, and play the PS5 version, it'd be a mistake to pre-order the PS5 version as it stands. You can check out the pre-order listings for each game below.

PS5 pre-order listings

It's certainly possible Amazon will update the PS5 listings to the same price as the PS4 versions. As of now, however, it makes no sense to get the PS5 edition unless you really want a case with PS5 box art, and it doesn't hurt to lock in your PS4 pre-order at this price as you can cancel anytime before the item ships. Hopefully, this doesn't become a trend, because those unfamiliar with the ins and outs of upgrades to next-gen games could wind up spending more money simply because the case says PS5.

@destro2020: That sounds like a personal problem for an article that isn’t made personally for you.

I assume after getting the ps4 version, eventually you will get a code or get free upgrade after registering game and then you have it digitally on ps5. Then you can't really resell your game after.

If you just bought the ps5 version physically, you could sell it after still. Especially if its just a single player campaign and not really any multiplayer. Beat it and resell shortly after and recoup a lot of your costs.

The writer of this article is real adamant that you are super foolish to not get the ps4 version first then upgrade to save $10, however it took me 2 seconds to figure out you could resell your ps5 version and recoup over half your costs depending on how fast you beat it or are done with it.

1. The pricing comes from Walmart, not Amazon. Walmart typically prices non-Sony-first-party new releases at about $10 off for Xbox One and PS4 (maybe Nintendo Switch, too, not sure), and Amazon is just being Amazon by scouring other stores pricing data and matching it. I don't know if Walmart plans to do something similar with PS5/XSX games and just hasn't gotten around to it, or if they will end this practice with the upcoming next gen releases.

2. Unless you absolutely can not wait for these games, I will echo what others have said, never buy a Ubisoft game at launch. While pretty much all games can be had cheaper by waiting, the wait for Ubisoft games to have significant price cuts and sales historically has been shorter than with most other publishers. I have no doubt that these will be good games, but I won't ever buy a Ubi game at launch*.

* - If it is ever actually released, I will probably buy Beyond Good and Evil 2 at launch.

@guessed: I agree with this, other than games that have time-sensitive multiplayer elements if you care about missing those. Luckily, that's not a big deal in most of their big titles. It mostly just came into play in The Division series recently.

One of the main reasons why these games are released so unpolished is because of pre-orders. Shame on you GameSpot for encouraging it.

@Barighm: I don't know if I believe this, since I've bought so many games that had no pre-order option that were incredibly unpolished. I think it's just the general state of the industry.

makes me wonder how bad last gen versions are. cross gen launch titles are usually bad on last gen machines.

PSA: buying ANY Ubi game at launch is a mistake, especially their annual releases. Ubi games get discounted within a month or two of launch.

They're offering those brand new PS4 games that aren't even out yet for only $50? Something's not right but since it's Amazon you get a price guarantee. So if you preorder a game for $50 now and the price goes up after all later one, then you'll still only have to pay the $50. Or at least that's how things are here in Europe. Amazon US seems to be very different in a lot of ways.

@Atzenkiller: No, that's how it works with Amazon, too. Even if the price dramatically increases, whatever price you paid is honoured. Tends to happen when you order back-ordered items.
