Sega Reveals Genesis / Mega Drive Mini, Contains 40 Classic Games [Update]

Update: Another 10 Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Mini games have been revealed. We now know the console will launch with Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Earthworm Jim, Caste of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, and World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Take a look at the full list of games revealed so far at the bottom of this article. Original story follows.

Sega has announced the Genesis Mini, also known as the Mega Drive Mini, if you're in Europe. The compact version of its classic 16-bit console will allow fans to indulge their nostalgia and play a range of old school games such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Castlevania: Bloodlines, and Gunstar Heroes on modern displays.

The Genesis Mini was revealed as part of Sega's Fes event, which is taking place in Tokyo, Japan. It will include 40 games, and so far the company has revealed ten of them: Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Space Harrier 2, Shining Force, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, ToeJam & Earl, Comix Zone, Altered Beast, and Gunstar Heroes. More games will be slowly revealed "over the coming months."

The Genesis Mini will launch worldwide on September 19. It will cost $79.99 US/£69.99/€79.99/AUD$139.95, and some retailers have begun taking preorders.

The Sega Genesis Mini is based on the Model 1 Genesis, except is approximately 55 percent smaller than its original incarnation, according to Sega. In the box will be the Genesis Mini, two replica three-button USB controllers, one USB to Micro-B power cable, and one HDMI cable. In North America a power adapter will also be included.

The game ports that are on the Genesis Mini were handled by M2, a team that is well known for its work on emulation and re-releases. M2 previously worked on Sega Ages and Sega 3D Classics Collection.

Releasing Mini versions of classic consoles has become something of a trend recently. Nintendo led the way with the NES Classic and the SNES Classic, both of which were received well by critics and went on to be hot commercial items. Sony followed suite with the PlayStation Classic, which wasn't received as warmly.

For those looking for a more immediate option, and one that offers a few more options, there's Analogue's Mega Sg. "While roughly $200 is a lot to spend on a console to play Genesis games, right now, the Mega Sg is the easiest way to get them up and running on a modern TV without sacrificing audio or video quality--the support for Master System and Sega CD games is the icing on the cake," said Peter Brown in his Mega Sg review.

"Some people will always prefer to go the route of using emulators, and others may only want to play with original hardware and stick to aftermarket mods. But if you are open to the idea of a third-party Genesis console, and you want the peace of mind knowing that it looks and sounds better than the best original console from Sega, there's no better option on the market than the Mega Sg."

Why are the Japs the only region getting the 6 button controllers?

Avatar image for James_xeno

I want to see the full game list! Either way though, this is great news.

Glad Sega went with M2 instead of AtGames who made the recent Genesis Flashback console.

This is a purchase for me to go with the Nes, Snes, Playstation mini consoles. We shall see if Sega can do a great job like Nintendo and avoid Sony's error.

Avatar image for Pupchu

This thing supports Master System and Sega-CD games as well?!? How? I want details on this.

Avatar image for moonco

@Pupchu: The Analogue - Mega Sg supports Master System and Sega-CD games, not the Genesis mini. You can check out the Mega Sg here

emmm well now, whos next???

Avatar image for fede_pyro

@kielkaiser: virtual boy mini, it will come with an adjustable weight collar for real nostalig neck pain

I waaaaant it. Have all the other minis so, what the hell. I have two Sega Genesis and a Sega CD and half a dozen wired 6 button controllers + two 6 button wireless controllers but I don't have that many games. This thing can fix that little problem in a giffy. Especially when it's inevitably hacked. Going to need to make more room for my gaming collection. Again.... I'd love an N64 mini and my daughter really wants a GameCube mini. Not likely to see a GameCube version but hopefully an N64.

Avatar image for rodoxthedark

@bdrtfm: they said they won’t be doing an n64 mini :(

Avatar image for bdrtfm

@rodoxthedark: Well that sucks.

Shadownrun and Phantasy Star II and IV or GTFO...

I bought the original Genesis for literally 2 games... Altered Beast and Mortal Kombat (because it had fatalities). I wasn't a Sega fan back in the day, but I was a master of MK1 with Raiden on it. Used to have tournaments and when I had house parties, dudes would play MK all drunk. I kept telling them they're not gonna win with a red cup in one hand, lol.

Avatar image for hyruler461

@Vodoo: SNES had fatalities, just no blood.

Avatar image for Vodoo

@hyruler461: The FIRST MK didn't have real fatalities. You could perform the button combo, but you didn't get the real fatality. For example, the guy (Kano, I think) that does the uppercut and knocks your head off, would just do an uppercut. Scorpion would not pull off his mask and blow fire until the other guy crumbled into a pile of burnt bones. The character that rips the head and spine out (Sub-Zero) didn't do that on SNES for MK1. On Genesis, Raiden would electrocute the other guy until he exploded, but on SNES he just falls down. They were edited fatalities, technically. But being the REAL fatality was what you wanted to see, it's just referenced that SNES didn't have fatalities for MK1.

I don't really care about a Genesis mini, but a Master System mini would be amazing for those of us who never got to own one.

we knew it was coming... after sega parted ways with @games, everyone got excited. this added a further delay but it is ok. getting m2 involved on this project was a wise choice indeed. i am happy i held off on the genesis collection (ps4) and will instead put that money towards a superior item. add to that, the modding community will crack this thing open in a few days/weeks and you have a very nice mini console to enjoy. simple plug and play with your tv with no junky emulators to worry about configuring. this is the right way. pre-ordered today.

Avatar image for lonesamurai00

@Xristophoros: yeah everything is peachy except that you'll have even more console clutter, further making your house look like someone whose a hoarder. You'll also come off looking like an obsessed video gamer with an absurd collection of toys and games - I mean 40 year old virgin anyone? The Sega collection is great by the way. Sega even blessed the PC community with modding in Steam Workshop, can't do that on any of the console versions.

Avatar image for onehitta323

Streets of Rage and a lot of Sega genesis games are still fun to play to this day.

Avatar image for gg27

I'll pick this up! But I want the N64 Mini Classic!

Avatar image for Baconstrip78

Who plays these old games anymore? I really can’t believe the market for this old crap.

Avatar image for atopp399

@Baconstrip78: old timers like me who grew up with them.

Avatar image for BMWPro77

@Baconstrip78: I do. More than for a few hours too. I'm in the midst of Simcity for SNES and I fire up my model 1 Genesis for some Lightening Force and Ghouls & Ghosts. I love my vintage videogame systems.

Avatar image for lodoss900

@Baconstrip78: nobody.. nostalgia last a few hours and then its put away forever

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@Baconstrip78: cod must have been the first game you ever played. another confused post-millenial tween bopper. you have my sympathies.

Avatar image for Baconstrip78

@Xristophoros: I’m 40 years old dipshit, hence the ‘78 after my name. Do you watch movies on a CRT TV? Or listen to music on cassette tapes?

Old tech is dead tech.

Avatar image for BMWPro77

@Baconstrip78: I own two CRT's for gaming however most of my gaming happens on a modern TV. Cassettes nah. I'm good with those even though I still own my cassette collection from back in the 80's and 90's.

Avatar image for xantufrog

@Baconstrip78: I was playing Sega Genesis today in fact.

Avatar image for ticktockman1979

@Baconstrip78: How old are you?

Avatar image for Barighm

@ticktockman1979: Probably just one of those kids who thinks broken ass games are "good" because the graphics are pretty.

Avatar image for redviperofdorne

Or you could go to Target/Walmart right now and get the Sega Genesis Flashback HD with 85 games....just saying.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@redviperofdorne: you are clearly out of touch on this subject... just saying.

Avatar image for xantufrog

@redviperofdorne: that thing has a lot of features and games on paper, but the build quality and emulation quality are notoriously pathetic. Plus 85 games - sure, but most of those nobody cares to play any more.

There's really a quality over quantity issue and a "you get what you pay for" moral surrounding every aspect of Sega's AtGames partnerships

Avatar image for superklyph

Kinda wish it read carts also

Avatar image for BMWPro77

@superklyph: Model 1 or Model 2 Genesis consoles are going pretty inexpensively on eBay these days. I got a mint Model 1 a couple of months ago in good physical condition for $32.50 because the guy who owned it didn't know how to test it and only had an RF connector. I bought a set of HD Retrovision component cables, a pre owned original Sega power brick as the one he had was from a Kenwood component and didn't put out enough wattage to run a Genesis, and I was good to go. It works flawlessly.

Avatar image for superklyph

@BMWPro77: I have a model 2 Genesis. I've just been dragging my feet on getting those Retrovision cables because of the price. I do see the irony, seeing as I'm considering getting the Mega SG.

Avatar image for BMWPro77

@superklyph: The cables are worth every single penny man. The best investment for someone who was salivating as soon as he found out about the Mega Sg.I spent less and got the quality I was looking for in an all original setup. Sound was a factor as well. I already own a Model 2 and a CDX and upon doing the research realized what I wanted was a Model 1 in good condition at a reasonable price. I got really lucky.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@superklyph: there are a number of alternatives out there if playing original carts is a high concern of yours.

Avatar image for natezowa100

Gunstar heroes is amazing. I hope they have all the Phantasy Star game, or at least 2 and 4

Avatar image for Richardthe3rd

As much as I like some of these games, the Sega Genesis collection will probably get most people by.

Couple it with 8bitdo's wireless Genesis controller clone and its gonna feel pretty authentic.

This is for collectors obviously.

Avatar image for vice86

Would have been cooler if they released it 30 years to the day on 8.14.19 but whatever. Pre-order placed.

Avatar image for acerimmer

Shining Force!! Hopefully that means both SF 1 & 2. I would love to see this series somehow become popular with younger gamers, especially as the turn-based strategy genre has made big strides recently with Fire Emblem and X-COM. Aside from Final Fantasy it's my all-time favorite series and still have some crazy hope it gets resurrected. Let's get some Phantasy Star in there as well.

Can Sega please include Trampoline Terror?
