Sega: Here Are The Takeaways From New Earnings Report

The numbers are in.

Like Square Enix, Sega today reported earnings for the nine-month period ended December 31, 2016. The report is not all that eye-opening, though there are some notable takeaways.

Sega's video game division, Entertainment Contents, benefited from new releases such as Football Manager 2017 and Yakuza 6 (which comes to North America in 2018), as well as continued sales of Phantasy Star Online 2. In all, Sega sold 8.13 million packaged games, up from last year (6.12 million).

In terms of smartphone games, Sega said Hortensia Saga and Puyopuyo!! Quest continued to see "robust sales."

Overall, Sega's Entertainment Contents division--which also includes arcade machines and animated movies--posted revenue of ¥155.4 billion ($1.39 billion) and operating income of ¥15.4 billion ($137 million). That's up 13.7 percent and a massive 449.4 percent respectively.

Looking ahead, Sega will release Puyo Puyo Tetris for the Nintendo Switch, while Persona 5 comes out in April; that RPG debuted in Japan last year.

Sega has multiple business units outside of gaming. Looking at them all, the company posted revenue of ¥285.7 billion (up from ¥245 billion) and a profit of ¥36.5 billion (up from ¥6.5 billion).

Keep checking back with GameSpot soon for more earnings reports, as Activision Blizzard, Take-Two, Ubisoft, and Nvidia are all scheduled to release earnings results this week.

Operating income 449,4% up. That would be beyond extraordinarily amazing if the value it compared to wasn't "bad" from a business point of view.

At least they're steady in the black now

Sega has a lot of dormant IP'S I'd love to see them bring back. I've been wanting a new shinobi or Daytona forever.

Yakuza 0 was an amazing game. Too bad heavy traffic sites like gamespot won't do more coverage on the game.

So PSO2 is doing well yet the west still will never get to see it, while Yakuza 6 gets released more than a year after its JP release, as usual. So nothing new from Sega. I just hope they don't influence Atlus too much.

@Atzenkiller: It would be a very bad decision to release PSO2 in the west now. The game is too old for something like that. In fact, it's over 4 years since JP release. Not only that, but if you have been playing on the JP or SEA servers at all, you can understand how the game is not really appealing to the majority of the western audiences (too much focus on cosmetics, too little actual gameplay variance between level 1 and level cap, in-game advertising, convoluted crafting system that requires dedication and planning instead of randomly pressing keys and still getting rewards, etc).

@Dark_Mits: Yeah, as unappealing as the Yakuza series or any other "made for Japan only" game is.

Cosmetics are everything in mmos and this type of online games. FF14 lets people spend real money on completely cosmetic crap and as it seems there are plenty of them actually buying that crap.

Same thing with crafting. While the system itself isn't too complicated it requires you to level up all crafting classes, of which there are a lot, if you want to be able to craft the best gear. In addition to the grind for better gear, which you also need.

Of course there's not much point in brining it over to the west now, Sega has fucked up a long time ago. But to say that it wouldn't have been successful when so many people were waiting for a sequel to PSO, some of which are still waiting, because it's "too Japanese" is just bullshit.

Sadly Sega seems to think the same way now. Back in the days of the Dreamcast they brought much more niche titles over, for many of which it was very clear they wouldn't be too successful.

@Atzenkiller: I'm saying it wouldn't be successful if it were ported over now. If it were ported over 3 years ago it would have been successful.

@Dark_Mits: Lame all around. PSO is a beloved Sega IP for many. It's even worse knowing Sega's been sitting on a English translation of the game for Asian territories. What zombies are running SoA?

Don't get me started on Dragon Quest 10.

No profit? You may want to read those numbers again. $1.39 billion and ¥36.5 billion is a whole lot of profit last time I checked.
