Sega Has Sold Over 350,000 Mega Drive and Genesis Games on Steam

Tim Allen probably played some part in that success.

Over 350,000 Mega Drive and Genesis games have been purchased on Steam since they were made available on April 28, Sega has announced.

"We're really chuffed that the fans have got behind this update," said James Schall, director of digital distribution for Sega of Europe.

Valve's digital store features a Sega Mega Drive and Genesis Hub, where ROMS for various Sonic the Hedgehog games can be bought, along with other classics such as Streets of Rage, Alex Kidd, and Golden Axe, among others.

In addition to playing the vanilla versions of its games, players can mod titles thanks to Steam Workshop support. This has resulted in weird and wonderful experiences such as the version of Streets of Rage 2 that replaces death cry sounds with Tim Allen's grunt from Home Improvement.

"350,000 sales is a phenomenal achievement for content which is over 20 years old! It shows that there's still a huge following out for the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis, reinvigorated by the fantastic community of modders out there uploading great content."

In October 2015, Sega said it is planning to release more older titles for the PC in the "coming months and years."

It followed this by announcing Sega 3D Classics Collection for the Nintendo 3DS in January 2016. The anthology collects a number of classic titles from the Japanese publisher, including Altered Beast, Thunder Blade, and Fantasy Zone 2.

In July 2015, Haruki Satomi, chief executive of Sega Games, said Sega is now aiming to improve the quality of its new games in hopes to make itself a valuable brand to video game audiences again.

"I've been talking to employees about how [Sega] should start putting serious consideration into quality from this point on," he said. "Particularly in North America and Europe, where it's always been more of a focus on schedules ... I believe that if we can't maintain quality, it would be better to not release anything at all."

He continued: "Sega in the '90s was known for its brand, but after that, we've lost trust, and we're left with nothing but reputation ... We'd like to win back the trust and become a brand once again."

One of Sega's biggest upcoming games is Persona 5, which is published by Atlus, a subsidiary of the company. The Persona 5 release date has been confirmed as September 15 in Japan. Another big Japanese RPG, Square Enix's Final Fantasy 15, will also be available in September worldwide.

@Moonco: If you say you do this for legacy games in public, god knows what you PC players do when no one's looking...

Because Sega classics are classic.

I just downloaded the Genesis Collection to my PSP last night in anticipation of some long travels in a week - can't wait to Comix Zone, Ecco, Ristar, Sonic, etc on the road

SEGA are siiting on gems they could easily make re masters of old games if they wanted

Streets of Rage 2

Gunstar Heroes

Super Hang On

Collums

Golden Axe (they did try but it was a disaster a remake side scroller would of been the best choice)

@Dav_id83: You mean remakes. Remasters would look terrible on high definition TVs.

Oh look, putting your games on a perpetually backwards compatible platform and putting them on sale regularly causes a lot of people to buy them!

Putting old games on Steam is free money, wake up Japanese devs. Looking at you, NINTENDO.

@Thanatos2k: Like Nintendo needs anymore money, those people had a whole swimming pool filled with cash already (Amiibo, Pokemon, 3DS, Wii U, physical games, Fire Emblem Awakening DLCs, eShop stuff, etc.). Sega was lucky they even made a fortune this much. If Nintendo is successful in the mobile market too then there's no way that company is dropping dead.

@leeko_link: Except the Wii U disaster caused the company to lose money three years in a row. The NX may do the same.

@Thanatos2k: To be fair, a lot of people paying a few bucks isn't necessarily worth the effort. And let's not forget a key fact: Nintendo = recently snapped a long quarterly profit streak, Sega = went bankrupt and had to merge to stay alive.

@Barighm: Nintendo's strategy is still to try to drive people to purchase their consoles, and as we've seen that's failing because casuals and gamers don't buy that stuff anymore. However a lot of these casuals still have nostalgic feelings for Nintendo, as do lots of gamers on Playstation, Xbox, and PC. Maybe by selling NES/SNES games to everyone on every device they could make a lot more than just selling them on their own platforms.

I wonder how many people would buy up NES/SNES games if they were officially sold on mobile and priced right, maybe around a couple dollars each.

@Barighm: It seems that people are more than happy to throw a couple bucks at Sega for this. 350,000 is a high number for 3 weeks of sales on this kind of thing.

If they keep games coming, and keep communication with consumers about it high, they may have found a way to revitalize a bit.

Imagine if this pays off more than they expect... we could see the same thing happen for their other systems.

A LOT of people would pay good money for an official Sega Saturn emulator.

This article suggests otherwise.

@Thanatos2k: They'd rather download and re-sell copies of roms from the websites they publicly blast, and then act like they are only playable on certain Nintendo systems.

ie. them lying through their teeth to say that SNES games are only playable on the 'new' 3DS because of it's more powerful CPU.

@Thanatos2k: Exactly! I had SNES games running on my DS LITE for god's sake. It's an outright lie to entice consumers who are ignorant on the subject to upgrade their DS for the 6th time.

I for one, am not happy with Nintendo in the least over the past decade... and their NX system sounds like it's going to be more of the same.

Still not enough to make me give-up my emulator console and rom-hacks.

That being said, it's great to see some official support in emulation for the first time since Bleem!

@so_hai: The concept being, it's better to support official emulation.

As in, this is technically an official replacement for something like Gens+ or Kega Fusion.

So, I'm talking about giving up the exact same games.

I'm surprised these sold so well, considering emulation. Personally, I just want more Sega 3D classics on the 3DS...

@artemis-v: Honestly, the amount of gamers that even know what emulation is, is a really really small percentage.

Most people probably don't even realize that THIS is an emulator, albeit an official one (that sounds weird to say)

@skyhighgam3r: I guess me and everyone I know are in that small percentage. I remember when emulation became this big thing in my teens. Still got a couple of emulators and rom-hacks on my current pc to this day.

@artemis-v: lol I wish I had friends like yours.

I had to explain what an emulator is at least a dozen times over the last year or so. I built an emulation console, and was going to try to sell some to my friends, but they had no idea what I was talking about haha.

I'd post a link to the old video (need to make a new one with recent changes) but GS frowns upon that for some stupid reason.

Just google "Gam3B0x" in a video search and it will pop right up.

The really need to make a Streets of Rage 2 remake. Same side-scroller, just with updated graphics. Similar style to Shadow Complex.

@artemis-v: I want them to release their 3D classics on something other than the 3DS.

I would kill to play the sonic games in 3D on my TV.
