Now Playing: GS News Update: Sega Genesis Classics Collection Coming To PS4 And Xbox One, But Not To Nintendo Switch

Sega has confirmed it will be releasing its Sega Genesis Classics Collection for PS4 and Xbox One this spring. It'll include more than 50 games from the company's iconic 16-bit system Genesis (or Mega Drive, for those outside North America). Fans can expect Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Shining Force, Virtua Fighter 2, and several games in the Phantasy Star and Streets of Rage series. Check out some of the games coming in the trailer below.

The collection looks to be similar to the existing Sega Genesis Classics Collection currently available for PC on Steam. The collection's new website also has a logo for Steam, so it seems PC players are also in line for the new compilation, although it's still unconfirmed. Nintendo Switch players, however, won't be receiving their copy of the Collection. That system is notably left off the announcement, even though Sega has recently released other classically inspired titles on the Switch like Sonic Forces.

The Collection will also include some enhanced features, of course, like Rewind and a host of visual filters to keep the games looking authentic. There will be full multiplayer capabilities and Trophies/Achievements, and a special Mirror Mode that allows you play the game with the screen flipped horizontally for extra challenge.

The game's announcement came after the website Seganerds posted a trailer and screenshots from the collection, saying Sega posted them on its website last week. Sega told Game Informer a mistake had been made, and the media was posted before the collection was actually supposed to be announced. Sega Genesis Classics Collection will release for PS4 and Xbox One on May 29, and you can get a fill list of the games it includes below.

If this collection has online multi-player I might get it. If not, I don't care.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is not in there really? Like only the best Sonic game.

Aren't these all on Steam already? I really want Desert Strike and Jungle Strike to come out!

@playstationzone: It's common knowledge that SEGA can't release Sonic 3 because Michael Jackson made its soundtrack.

@srfilk86: I do understand that but didn’t have problem when put it on sega collection back on PS3 and Xbox360. I guess Michael Jackson’s manger doing this.

I really hope that with all the retro-gaming hype, Disney releases a collection of some of their old sega/snes games. I'd love to play Lion King, Aladdin, Hook, Castle of Illusion, Quackshot, Page Master, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, etc. again. Maybe I'd have a better chance of getting past Level 3 of Gargoyles with an Xbox controller...probably not though :).

If they had battletoads and double dragon then I'd more likely buy it

@limelight022: I thought it was a port from Nintendo from Sega at some point. Thanks for that...but what a pity

I had Ecco at the time and it looked amazing, but as a game I was never that impressed.

Streets of Rage 3? Or Bare Knuckle 3? This is important.

@limelight022: No no no, BK3 was the original japanese version of SOR3. It had a whole plethora of things altered for the US release as SOR3, including the main character color palettes, the game's difficulty, a boss that was removed from the US version, even the entire story was changed. I'm wondering if Sega will finally get over themselves, give BK3 and official translated version, and say 'Have at y'all.'

No Rolling Thunder, no Sonic 3 & Knuckles, no Shining Force 3..the list is kind of hit and miss.

Personally, I always loved the Smash Pack collection they had on the Dreamcast, it's how I got introduced to Shining Force 1, and I spent many hours playing through Virtua Cop 2.

Avatar image for lj40
LJ40

@UFOLoche: Shining Force 3: A 3 disc game for the Sega Saturn. Why would you expect that on a Genesis compilation? Rolling Thunder wasn't on the Genesis either. Your complaints are confusing and stupid.

Avatar image for UFOLoche
UFOLoche

@lj40: Ok, so I'll be honest, I don't exactly remember off the top of my head what consoles a 30 year old game was on, and thought it was on a Sega console because I remembered the graphics and sound and equated it to Genesis, oh no, the horror. As for Shining Force 3, why the hell not? Would you rather they keep repackaging the same games every console generation? They literally have a shit ton of games that people love, yet have only gotten re-released once or not at all. Shining Force 3, Guardian Heroes, Snatcher(Which before you start frothing at the mouth, I know it's Konami), the list literally goes on for quite a while.

Thanks for the personal attack though, it's nice to see that there are still people with no idea how to do social interactions getting mad because someone can't perfectly remember a list of games released in the late 1980s.

@UFOLoche: You have the world's largest search engine at your fingertips... Everyone has lapses in memory... that's why we use Google.

Avatar image for lj40

@UFOLoche: I called your complaints stupid, not you. Maybe learn what a personal attack is first before accusing people of such things.

As to why not Shining Force 3: IT'S NOT A GENESIS GAME. THIS IS A GENESIS COLLECTION. You know where it (and Guardian Heroes and Snatcher) would belong? A Saturn Collection. This is not brain surgery.

Lastly, I have absolutely no idea what difference you thought Snatcher being from Konami would make to me, but it does not matter in the slightest.

Essentially the same games list that they always roll with.

It's too bad that it's all 1st party SEGA. Good selection overall, but many many missing classics. Toe Jam & Earl has always sucked, why is it always included? Those 2 should have been replaced by ThunderForce III & IV.

They should also throw in some 32X games and arcade versions of the likes of Galaxy Force II, Space Harrier, Shinobi, Outrun etc.

And finally, we should finally get the opportunity to have arcade perfect versions of Turbo Outrun, Outrunners, Planet Harrier, Golden Axe II, Sonic Arcade / Moonwakler arcade etc.

Avatar image for limelight022
limelight022

@southsouthsac: Thunderforce games are made by Technosoft, not SEGA. Much like the recent Afterburner remake, Outrun has the licensing problems because of the car, and Moonwalker is another licensing problem. But yes i played all those games when they came out and they are fantastic. Would like to the see arcade version of Moonwalker ported one day but will probably never happen.

Meh. Already got this on PS3. What we need is a port of Shining Force III.

Avatar image for jinzo9988

A lot of those games are a better fit for on-the-go gaming. You'd think the Switch would've been reason #1 to release this... especially considering that Nintendo doesn't have its retro heavy-hitters on the platform yet.

Avatar image for playstationzone
PlaystationZone

@jinzo9988: they can’t fit 50 games on switch because they couldn’t fit 50 on PS3 . But ninendo should put this classic games on switch store but

Ninendo not doing that yet.

Avatar image for Prats1993
Prats1993

@jinzo9988: These were home console games and certainly not designed for “on the go” gaming.

Avatar image for jinzo9988
jinzo9988

@Prats1993: A lot of these games can be beaten in like 30 minutes. I loved some of these games growing up but they're just not couch-gaming material anymore... not for me anyway. I would agree for roleplaying games if you can't save state wherever you want because that's not pick-up-and-play friendly, but Sonic 2 on my couch? Nah, I'd rather play Breath of the Wild.

If this collection were released on the Switch, it would essentially turn it into a Sega Nomad but lighter and with better battery life.

Avatar image for shadowwarrior4

@Elranzer: sega nomad?? oh you mean the sega game gear?

Avatar image for mcnichoj
mcnichoj

@shadowwarrior4: No, game Gear was Sega's GameBoy equivalent and had its own games while the Nomad actually let you play Genesis carts on the go.

Avatar image for shadowwarrior4

@mcnichoj: no wonder sega went bankrupt , they had to many damn peripherals remember the kinect yes the kinect it was a circle thing with body motion like controls meant to play games like mortal kombat but it turned out like the NES power glove, a POS

Avatar image for mcnichoj

@shadowwarrior4: Not really a peripheral, just a console too far ahead for its time.

@Barighm: probably because its made by Konami and not SEGA.

The fact that this isn't coming to the Switch isn't the issue.

Basically it's like Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection/Sega Mega Drive Collection for PS3/360/etc but you're expected to pay full RRP for many of those games yet again and as a deal sweetener there are slightly more games in the collection, the biggest of which are Toejam and Earl and its sequel, which admittedly are great games but not worth paying for again. The above game was in itself a "rerelease with slightly more games" of another compilation game that launched on the PSP to boot, for crying out loud. Don't waste your money on this when you can buy a used copy of the above games.

Lazy doesn't even begin to describe it. C'mon, SEGA.

For all the people who just can’t BELIEVE this is not coming to the Switch:

Perhaps you didn’t play games all through the 90’s when Nintendo and Sega were bitter rivals.

These are pretty much all of the games from that era in this collection.

Avatar image for jinzo9988
jinzo9988

@dragonagelore: I don't think that's the issue. Sega's in the business of making money, not still being butthurt over a rivalry that occurred 25 years ago. A lot of Sega classics ended up being released on the 3DS. After Burner 2, Altered Beast, Ecco, Phantasy Zone, Gunstar Heroes, Out Run, Shinobi III, Sonic 1 and 2, Space Harrier, and Streets of Rage 1 and 2 were all on there.
