The game will launch with 60 historical cultures like Ancient Egyptians, Romans, Khmers, and Vikings, and you can mix them to more than a million combinations. The game will throw real historical events and figures at you to deal with, and you can make your own scientific discoveries and visit wonders of the world.

Combat will include tactical intricacies like terrain elevation. You can build your city on high ground to make it more difficult to siege, keep archers in the woods to serve as a line of defense. The game is slated for release on PC in 2020.

"Amplitude Studios was founded with the intention of creating this game, all the games we've created up until now have been leading up to this moment," said Romain de Waubert in the announcement. "We are so excited to finally be able to share with the community what has been at the heart of Amplitude since day one."

I wish it looked more realistic like Civ 5 and less like Civ 6. Not a fan of cartoonish civ games.

Hmm, the start of the trailer was interesting, but for 2/3 it went on too long. The final bits finally showed game play and while I love Civilization, their footage almost looked too much like Civ for my tastes. I know this will come later, but I would have loved to see something that showed how it's different from Civ. Show different tech or units?

I do realize the article does mention "you can mix them to more than a million combinations" for the cultures. So that is different. But the trailer didn't show me aspects of that. Again, I get it, it's just an announcement...

Well, I do like Civ style of games, but you gotta really separate yourself from the grand daddy of strategy games. That's what I'll be looking for. Good luck.

@Louis: It builds the hype. While you're watching the caveman you're wondering what the hell is this game about? Then the beautiful watercolour graphics hit you, I was breathless.

You need to play their other strategy game Endless Legends to see how different their style is to Civ. Amplitude Studios was doing districts long before Civ VI so who's copying who? I'm going to assume you haven't played it otherwise you wouldn't be asking this question. Indeed Civilization has reigned supreme for far too long, they dropped the ball with Civ VI though, imho, Amplitude has a real chance to steal the crown with this. Greatest surprise of Gamescom thus far for me!

@bluzima: Definitely agree, it was for building hype. I admit I was so curious with the caveman start that I wanted that to move on quicker to the gameplay...

Thanks for the background on their other strategy games! That I did not realize. Actually I see I have some of their games tagged on my wishlists as they look like something I'd like. Okay then, I feel a bit more comfortable in what they are attempting here. They definitely have some great experience in their corner.

On your point about Civilization reigning supreme for too long... My brother pointed out that this could be another example of where someone comes along and as you wrote, steals the crown, as the Planet Coaster folks did with Rollercoaster Tycoon, or Cities: Skylines trumping SimCity. (In our opinion of course.)

So I'll definitely be flagging this game to follow. My hopes are high for a great game. Thanks!

@Louis: Nice examples, they are definitely cases where this has happened. Simcity has all but faded into obscurity as a result, used to be one of my favourites back in the day. As a long-time Civ fan the possibility of this happening to Civ breaks my heart but you have to be cruel to be kind. They have become stale and need a kick up the rear!
