Sega Asks If You Want More Yakuza Games After Kiwami 2

Yakuza forever.

Hot on the heels of the launch of Yakuza Kiwami 2--the full remake of the series' second entry--Sega put out a survey asking if people are interested in more. Specifically, it asks four separate questions that seemingly point to different projects that you may be aware of (see below).

First, "how interested are you in remasters/remakes of existing Yakuza games?" is likely to be in relation to the remasters of Yakuza 3, 4, and 5 that are currently only slated for release in Japan. There aren't any known plans to re-localize those games, but this may hint at them coming to the West. All three original games are available for PlayStation 3.

Second, "how interested are you in new games set in the world of Yakuza?" could be pointing to both Ryu Ga Gotoku Online (Yakuza Online) and Shin Ryu Ga Gotoku (Yakuza 7) which are still in development. A new protagonist named Kasuga Ichiban has been detailed for the next game in the series and will make an appearance in Ryu Ga Gotoku Online which is set to launch sometime this year in Japan. No plans have been announced for a Western release.

The question "how interested are you in purchasing games created by the Yakuza team in other worlds, like the upcoming Fist of the North Star game?" might be related to Sega's unannounced project being handled by the Yakuza team. More details are coming in September, likely during Tokyo Game Show, but we know the game will be a new IP.

Lastly, for those crossing their fingers for localized and remastered versions of Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan and Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin, there could be hope. "How interested are you in various spin-off titles that never received Western release?" is more than likely to be gauging interest for the two historical games. Kenzan takes place during Japan's Edo period while Ishin is set during the Bakumatsu period--both games use character models and voice actors from the mainline series to tell its historical fiction.

You can take the survey yourself here. In the meantime, be sure to check out our Yakuza Kiwami 2 review and Yakuza 6: The Song Of Life review if you're interested in the series. Better yet, watch our discussion on why you should play the entire Yakuza series and how we should aspire to be like Kazuma Kiryu. Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise takes on an alternate story to the source material and you can watch gameplay here before its October 2nd release date.

I wouldn't mind trying out that Yakuza Online game. Online co-op beat-em-up with the current engine would be dope.

I would love to see a Yakuza game that set in the 60s or so and tell the story of how the Tojo clan was created. Along with all of the characters like Kazama, Hirose, Dojima, Shimano, Sera, Kuze, Awano, Shibusawa in their younger days. Not to mention the man himself, Makoto Tojo. They all have plenty of room to explore. Must be quite a wild and interesting pack. Because, seriously, the Tojo clan afer the 3rd chairman is kinda a train wreck.

Or they could choose to go the simple route in the mean time and make Yakuza: Dancing all night. Yea, that would do.

Never got to play Yakuza as they were coming out originally, so I just recently picked up Yakuza Kiwami... and goodness, it is fun. I'd love to see more Kiwami's made.

well, it has already been confirmed that the yakuza team will be announcing a NEW IP at tokyo game show this year... we have enough yakuza so please let the series rest for now, otherwise this franchise is going to hit assassins creed levels of fatigue and we don't want that.

@Xristophoros: Hopefully it's not an anime game. When completing the survey I hit "I don't know" when they asked if I'll buy fist of the north star lmao.

Man, that survey is 12 pages long... sheesh! Anyway, I'll take a remaster of 3 and 4. Yakuza 3 needs a full unedited version in the west whilst Yakuza 4 is possibly my favourite. I liked the fighting styles of the fourth game and the story and characters are interesting. The fifth Yakuza was a digital only release on the PS3. Anyone fancy another Yakuza Dead Souls game??

Please Sega bring more awesome games to the West. Love the virtual tourism elements and hilarious combat motions. Like jamming an orange into an enemy’s mouth then kicking his stomach and watching it fountain out it was just funny.

Man, they're really going all out on this now. I have zero interest in a remake of 3-5, or a remaster. 3 was by far the weakest game in the series and the others were good but not worth replaying. I sure would have liked to play the 2 spinoffs that they never released here but it's too late for that now.

But what I'd really like for them to do is to stop pushing out 1 or more Yakuza games every year and to finally focus on delivering a quality game again. To move away from the soap opera level of quality and the focus on endless amounts of side content, all extremely cheaply produced with complete lack of facial animations, and the same handful of sounds and gestures in every game. It's ridiculous and the fact that the games are still selling is quite surprising with regards to that. They've literally turned the series to shit, with mostly people buying it who are invested in it. Same as it used to be with the AC series, one sequel every single year.

@Atzenkiller: the focus of yakuza is the narrative. everything else is window dressing... there is no need to spend hundreds of hours with the mini games and side content if you don't wish to. if you don't like the narrative, then i've no idea why you bothered with the series to begin with. i agree that the series will reach fatigue levels soon so they should back off now. it has been confirmed that a new ip from the yakuza team will be announced at tokyo game show this year.

@Xristophoros: The narrative was great in the first 2 games but at some point it turned into a soap opera. Year later, Kiryu gets mixed up in big dealings again, fights a lot of bad Yakza dudes, shows his honor and manliness, yada yada. It's gotten stale many years ago and the reason for that are the yearly releases and complete lack of innovation. They've only been piling more on top of it.

And the side stuff has always been a big part of the appeal of the Yakuza games because many of them are really well done and really out there. But it's the presentation that's really piss poor. Especially with their new engine it looks so fucking weird how the characters are not moving anything but their mouths while talking. Any other devs adds generic animations for that but for some reason Sega's team seems to have forgotten to do that.

The quality is just piss poor in general now. No wonder you're claiming that it's all about the story, as that's the only part they put any effort in nowadays. But it sure didn't use to be like that. And if you've played a bunch of these games already then you know what to expect. The story is just the same old stuff all over again every time as well. That's how it works with soaps and similar products where it's all about releasing something regularly to make money, instead of creating something that's actually worth releasing.

@Atzenkiller: There are still people that haven't played these games. To downright say the quality is poor doesn't give way to those that haven't experienced such a great series.

I was first introduced into the game with yakuza 0, The story was amazing, while the side stories and side content were just extra icing to what was a great game overall.

If you don't like soaps stick with another series, don't bash the games for what made it great in the first place. Many people are still loving this series, both old and new. Don't force your ideals just because your used to this type of game way too much of the same concept. If your bored with this concept go play another game.

@srfilk86: To get sales they'd have to release the games here first. Which is something that Sega has always been very hesitant to do when it comes to these games. It started with the second game, which if I remember correctly only came out here about 2 years after the Japan release. At a point when the PS2 was already dead. Was it surprising that it sold poorly at that point? Hardly.

Then they pulled the same shit with Yakuza 5, pretty much not wanting to release it in the west at all, until suddenly after a long time they surprisingly decided to do it after all. And there's also been cut content in other games for the western release to save cost. So yeah, Sega has done everything to mess things up and they have noone to blame but themselves for the lack of success the series had here before. And now that things have changed they're going all out and trying to milk it as much as they can again, as if they were hell bent on finally ruining the franchise for good. Sega just never learns.

I sure hope they do. While Yakuza 3/4/5 aren't impossible to find or anything some of them are on the more expensive side for the PS3 ones because I guess the releases were fairly limited. So having a remake/remaster easily available for modern consoles or PC would be nice. Honestly they wouldn't need to do much would they? They are all PS3 games so just bump it up to 1080/4k and give us 60 fps gameplay and ship it out.

@Devil_wings00: I'm sure you could get each of them for a few bucks during a PSN sale, same as any other PS3 game.

It would be so nice to have the whole series on one console. Having said that, I've only gotten Kiwami 1. I'd like to pick up 0, then Kiwami 2. Then HOPEFULLY the remasters of 3 and up.

Why do they need to make a survey asking us if we want more yakuza? There's a plenty of gamers that jumped shipped from the 360 to ps4 and releasing only Zero, 1, 2, and 6 on it makes no sense. Not to mention (0 and soon 1) is on PC now. These games are great and I've been a huge fan of yakuza since the ps2 days. It's great to see that Sega finally recognized the demand for them here in the states and I expect 3, 4, and 5 to be remastered and release in the states regardless of any survey, especially since it's already happening in japan and I would imagine it wouldn't take THAT much more work to get the translated versions on ps4 for the states.

The survey is really detailed. I have yet to actually purchase the game and really want to. I would feel bad for filling it out without actually purchasing the game. But hell, I will as soon as I can and fill out the survey post haste. I need more Yakuza games released in the west!
