Warner Bros. on Thursday released a new trailer for its upcoming crime movie Black Mass, giving us a fresh look at Johnny Depp as notorious Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger.

It's a gripping trailer. The veteran actor Depp provides a terrifying portrayal of Bulger, who is serving two life sentences for his involvement in 11 murders, federal racketeering, extortion, and conspiracy.

Black Mass, directed by Crazy Heart's Scott Cooper, opens in theaters on September 18.

The movie is based on the 2012 book Black Mass, which details Bulger's life and relationship with FBI agent John Connolly (played by Zero Dark Thirty's Joel Edgerton) in 1970s South Boston.

Today's trailer isn't just about Bulger and Connolly, however. We also get a look at Benedict Cumberbatch as Whitey's brother Billy and Kevin Bacon as FBI agent Charles McGuire. The movie also features Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey, Need for Speed) as Whitey Bulger's former girlfriend, Lindsey Cyr.

In other organized crime-related entertainment news, 2K Games earlier this week officially announced Mafia III. The game's first trailer will be released next week during Gamescom.
