Secret Of Mana Is Being Remade For PS4, Vita, And Steam

Now with all-new 3D graphics.

Just when you thought you couldn't get enough remakes, Square Enix is coming back with one more. Secret of Mana, one of the most beloved SNES RPGs, is being remade from the ground up for PS4, PS Vita, and Steam. It's set for release on February 15, 2018.

Shedding its 16-bit looks for high-definition 3D, this iteration of Secret of Mana intends to keep everything you love about the 1993 title but improve it for the modern day. The remake will also include unspecified gameplay updates and an entirely new musical score.

If you just can't wait to get your hands on Randi, Primm, and Popoi's adventure again, or for the first time, pre-orders are open on the PlayStation Store. Pre-orders will include two different outfits for each character--moogle and tiger. Though pre-orders are not currently live on Steam, those who pre-order or purchase the Day One Edition on the platform during launch week will also receive this bonus.

I have just looked at the prologue scene of Secret of Mana.

Just to cut through some vegetation that is blocking his way, the protagonist plucks a sword out of a rock - never mind how peculiar it is for a sword to be in a rock.

I know that there are a lot of protagonists in Japanese video games that have more courage than wisdom, but man, this.

With all these remakes and remasters releasing, it seems as though the video game industry has met the same fate as Hollywood: they ran out of ideas to come up with original content, smh

Well, i'll be the odd one out here and say i'm not terribly excited about this, despite the fact i adored the game when it released... think i was still in grade school at the time. While it was fun at first, things did get old and repetitive soon enough if i remember right. Plus... its already been said here but there are some better choices for remakes. Chrono Trigger and FF6 in particular. I'd like to see a FF6 sequel actually.

I'm usually anti-remake/reboot, but this game...

**throws money at screen**

WANT. NAO. Probably in my top 3 SNES RPGs next to FFVI and Chrono Trigger.

(Please have online multiplayer. :)

"and an entirely new musical score."

They better mean remastered/remixed, because if it's literally entirely new, I won't play it. SoM has one of the best soundtracks ever, and it'd be criminal to just throw it out.

The original was one of very few if not the only 2 player rpg ...great to see a remake would be great if they brought back the 2 player deal as well

Avatar image for GamerGeek87

@ilukey40: It was actually 3 player if you had a multitap.

Avatar image for Erllun

This one is a must for anyone who played it on snes. It was one of the best multiplayers games I've ever played in a console. Hope they keep everything good it had and just tune some things like the pause when one of the players get into menu or cast a spell. Other than that the lvling and skill system plus all the combat mechanics should stay the same.

Damn, now if only they would remake Chrono Trigger and Xenogears and I'd be a happy man!

Avatar image for locke90

the child in me is coming back to life with this announcement im definately going to get this.

@lonesamurai1: Hey man, I'm just glad and happy to see a lot of JRPG getting PC support is all I care about. Dear Japan, keep on supporting PC and PC will take care of you :)

I just looked up the pre-order on psn it's only set for PS4 on March 31st. Maybe the psn hasn't updated it yet or the Vita owners of the west got screwed again.

Avatar image for ToadstoolPeach

Here's hoping the cut SNES CD-ROM content will be added in for the remake!

Avatar image for kst8er

Crap, just when I was about to sell my vita they come along with something worth keeping it for

Avatar image for Xristophoros

surprised this is getting a vita release in this day and age... also surprised s-e decided to skip out on the 3ds and switch. ouch, that must smart for nintendo fans.

Wish it was hires 2d remake, but I'm excited nonetheless.

Avatar image for snugglebear

I preordered earlier via my phone because I couldn't wait. Picked up Hob, too, cause Runic Games made Torchlight and I love that shtuff.

Avatar image for Sefrix

@snugglebear: How on earth have I not known about Hob? Have mad respect for Runic Games and even if I didn't looks like an extremely well done game. Wow, thanks for this!

And here I am just throwing money at the screen.

Avatar image for davillain-

I'd prefer an Evermore remake Crono Trigger but this is great nonetheless for Secret of Mana remake!!!

Avatar image for rickjamesia

@davillain-: I don't think we'll ever see Secret of Evermore again. I think that was made by a Western branch of SE that has seemed pretty non-existent since then. Maybe they'll hand it to one of their western subsidiaries. That would be cool

Avatar image for Artwark

Now give us a Chrono Trigger Remake!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Avatar image for JRLennis

@Artwark: A CT remake needs to be grand in scope, combining classic gameplay with the kind of production values seen in a mainline Final Fantasy title. It deserves no less than that.

Avatar image for JustPlainLucas

Well, leave it to modern day SE to sully its release with pre-order costumes and day one editions.

Avatar image for smashthestars

this is an easy buy for me! Loved that game.

Avatar image for RodolfoCM

Obviously made for mobiles.

Avatar image for Artwark

@RodolfoCM: What the hell are you talking about? The graphics are great even for a small trailer. I think you're confused with the shitty port of Final Fantasy 6 that's on Steam.

Avatar image for kiloman_74

@RodolfoCM: no. When this game first came out were mobile phones around? You haven't played it first time around on the snes huh!

Avatar image for RodolfoCM

@kiloman_74: I'm talking about the remake. It has poor graphics compared to what PS4 can do. It looks like it was developed for mobile.

Avatar image for locke90

@RodolfoCM: the graphics are fine.

That out of the way, SoM is my favorite game of all-time. So, as long as this is a one to one remake, no new bells n' whistles to screw it up, possibly with online co-op, I'm sold. Hell, even if it isn't, it not being Dawn of Mana nor a Mobile game has me sold.

Either way, Secret of Mana is one of my absolute favorite titles so this is a real treat. :)

Avatar image for Celiria_Rose

@Drkr_Zen: "this iteration of Secret of Mana intends to keep everything you love about the 1993 title but improve it for the modern day. The remake will also include unspecified gameplay updates and an entirely new musical score."

So that would be a no on the one to one remake.

Avatar image for Drkr_Zen

@Celiria_Rose: Well, all the screens and video we've seen thus far are one to one. What I meant is more that the gameplay aspect of the game won't be altered, or worse experimented with like with Legend, Heroes or Dawn of Mana. *shudders*

The entire series is used as a guinea pig, following SoM and SD3, the closest thing to being any good was Sword.

Avatar image for locke90

@Celiria_Rose: hopefully it has the old score as an option to use as well.

Avatar image for nefphlegm

@Drkr_Zen: Oh snap I totally forgot about the multiplayer aspect of it! Online co-op would be so much fun! I never had a chance to beat this game.

Avatar image for Drkr_Zen

@nefphlegm: It really is great, start to finish. Simple plot, but one of the best from the 16-bit era. It honestly trumps Chrono Trigger, in every way, for me. On that note, I'd love to see Trigger and Evermore remade like this. o-o

But yeah, the co-op is a ton of fun in this game. I still remember always wanting an open world RPG, in the early 90s, and only knowing of Zelda 3 - which was open world, but no RPG elements. Then a friend introduced me to this, and I've played it every which way I can - 1 player, 2, full team of 3. Its just a blast any way you play it.

Avatar image for Barighm

Did not see that coming.

Is it being done by the World of FF people? Sure looks like it.

Avatar image for Jelster79

We allready GET SoM in the Snes Mini release. If they want to remake old cool snes rpg's, why not start with Chrono Trigger, which is horribly absent from the Snes Mini library. Japanese logic?

Avatar image for aross2004

@Jelster79: Guessing the SNES release will not include 3 player co-op like the original release did. That alone makes the remaster worth it because this game was fun as **** with 3 players.

Avatar image for Barighm

@Jelster79: Japanese logic is generally "do what our Japanese fans want". Japanese fans really like Mana but I don't think they liked Chrono Trigger as much.

Avatar image for nefphlegm

@Jelster79: Save one of the best for last I always say.

Avatar image for Jersalaw

Only worth it if they add multiplayer so I can play across the country with my brother.

Avatar image for Barighm

@Jersalaw: I'm betting that's the "modern" aspect.

Avatar image for Celiria_Rose

@Barighm: The game had multiplayer in the original release.

Avatar image for locke90

@Celiria_Rose: um I honestly think he knew that already.

Avatar image for moonco

Hope Seiken Densetsu 3 gets a remake and localized for the West

Avatar image for freedom01

@moonco: loved playing the 3rd one, was fun playing the different stroylines of each character.
