Sea Of Thieves Hits An Impressive New Player Milestone

The pirate-'em-up Sea of Thieves has hit 15 million buccaneers on PC and Xbox One since its launch in 2018.

Sea of Thieves' launch wasn't the smoothest back in March 2018, but it's since managed to lure in many players with its high seas hijinks. According to a recent blog post, the pirating adventure has notched over 15 million players in over two years, and June 2020 was its biggest month ever, with more than 3.3 million players walking the plank. The game has also sold more than a million copies on Steam.

In a previous blog post back in January celebrating 10 million players, an executive producer at Rare called Sea of Thieves Microsoft's most successful new IP of the Xbox One generation. A recent update added ghastly ghost ships to the game, along with more shanties and a new special event that challenges players to sink Captain Flameheart's flagship, the Burning Blade.

While initial reviews of Sea of Thieves were muted, the game has improved quite a lot over its two year lifespan. In GameSpot's Sea of Thieves re-review, critic Michael Rougeau called the game a voyage worth embarking on. "Since the game's launch over two years ago, Rare has worked continuously to build on Sea of Thieves' strong framework, and the countless features and systems they've added have all enhanced that core, undeniable truth," he wrote. "They still have work to do, and for some players, it will never be enough. But there are open seas and clear skies ahead."

Well, a game that force you to play PVP without giving the chance to play PVE, is clearly only for PVP fans, but doing so, you lose a ton of potential players that has no interest in forced PVP.

Most games that go for the pure PVP just build a fanbase that is pretty obsessed with PVP; which usually account for 45-55% of your total profit on sales; but to be successful, you need to attract the occasional player; the one that has little time at hand and does not want to deal with shenanigans from other players, because wasting time by being killed by others and not having fun, is something that the occasional player dislike... and that means they won't buy your game.

It is pretty easy to see that when you have different modes (PVP, PVE, co-op), you have a larger chance to attract extra income; and adding solo gameplay is even more rewarding because these days, people are tired of MMO and open world games, as demonstrated by the rise of battle royale games or co-op games where you can play with others or solo, as you wish.

SOT has the potential to be fun, but as long as it will stay a PVP based game, will just be one of the many PVP games out there, snobbed by anyone that wants some PVE and the ability to not have others spoil your fun.

I honsetly tought this thing was long dead. With these numbers i guess they've added lots of new content. I remember this being a really good idea but there was barely anything to do. I guess Rare has some spark in it still.

@Terrorantula: 15 million people disagree. Solo I would say its not nearly as fun. However 4 friends on a ship is just hilarious fun.

I absolutely love Sea of Thieves. No session is the same & there really is nothing else like it. It’s become my favourite game ever.

This is actually quite impressive they managed to turn this thing around in this day and age. I thought it was doomed to obscurity for sure when it launched

I had to google it just now to find out that it's actually not a f2p game. So where did they get these numbers from? Are they doing regular free weekends? Cause I don't see how some game most people have never even heard of could get 15 million players otherwise. Is it super popular among kids right now, like the Lego games?

@keiser69: Even 5 million purchases for a unknown game that you never hear about anywhere sounds like way too much. Again, it's not some f2p game apparently. Those always get huge unique player numbers simply because lots of people try them out, then never touch them again. But I highly doubt that most of those 10 million subscribers, I assume that's what you were referring to with that number, have played this game. I've subscribed to that Game Pass for PC for a month as well and I've played 2 games out of that library during that time. Not everyone's gonna play every single no name game that's available on such a service.

@sealionact: So enlighten me. What is it that it tells about me? That I mostly visit Gamespot for gaming news and they never talk about it? Unlike all the daily clickbait articles about all those f2p games like Fortnite. If that's what you've learned about me then you would be correct.

@Atzenkiller: Sea of Thieve has over 2 million followers on twitch. It's weird that you've never heard of it. Are you living under a rock? That was a joke lol but seriously?

@worlds_apart: And how exactly would I know how many followers it has on twitch? Do you regulary check which pages on that streaming site are most popular? In case you're not aware, that is not a common behavior for most people.

@Atzenkiller: It's not a matter of you knowing how many users it has. My point was the game is very popular on twitch, if you use twitch, then you will use the category section, Sea of Thieve is always high on this list, meaning it's a VERY popular game. If you don't understand what I'm saying, it must mean you don't use Twitch much, hence you are misinformed in your judgment of Sea of Thieve not being popular and should refrain from making such statements. Anyone who uses Twitch will know the game is popular is my point. I don't know what to tell you, I asked if you lived under a rock, but in all seriousness, if you're unaware of how popular Sea of Thieve is, then something isn't right.

sealionact put it perfectly, let me quote him:

"I think you not hearing about Sea of Thieves probably says more about you than the game itself."

@Atzenkiller: Dude, sea of thieves is a big game. Its big on twitch, its big on YouTube, its plastered on the xbox home screen, its got a lot of players and if you click on the Sea of Thieves link in this article you'll see that GS have mentioned it and done articles about the game and its many updates every month going all the back to its launch.

Its not a personal attack, its just a comment about you not hearing about the game is surprising.

@sealionact: Gamespot has done articles about pretty much every game out there. But there's like a million Fortnite articles being posted here every week. And plenty about all the other popular f2p games out there. But I've never seen one about this game aside from when it launched and before that.

Whatever, I'm not interested in arguing about this. I guess it's more popular than it seemed then. Not that it makes any difference anyway. The main difference is that if this game is being sold instead of being f2p, then it should have generated a lot of money already. But again you never hear about it anywhere unless you visit one of the social media profiles of this game, as you've pointed out yourself. "It's huge on Youtube." If you actually care about it and have actively sought it out. Youtube keeps bombarding me with random gaming related videos in the recommendations, a lot of them from streamers playing Fortnite. But none of them ever show this game. Yeah, it's huge, I get it.

@Atzenkiller: Do you play fortnite? I've never played it as it doesn't interest me which is maybe why you're getting fortnite recommendations and me Sea of Thieves. Google always watching dontcha know....just a theory.

@sealionact: Yeah, nice theory you have there. But Youtube is constantly recommending stuff to people to see if they might like it. Try opening the page in private mode where there's nothing stored on your device. You might be surprised that you'll still get random recommendations, usually based on what's popular right now.

It's been a little bit since I played Sea of Thieves, but my only real issue with it last time was that we couldn't save quest progress. If we didn't get through a quest in one sitting, or if we got a macguffin on our ship, but got sunk before we turned it in, we were pretty much starting over.

Maybe that's changed by now? It's kinda the only thing keeping my friends and I from playing more.

If only they added a solo mode or something then a lot more people would play, myself included but it sure a lot of fun to just mess around and sail. Not everyone likes the PvP survival aspect.

@Lord_Sesshy: Don't get you hopes too high. These are not planned to be used as farming servers like a lot of you hope, they were developed with content creators in mind. So there will be no progression or gold available in them (or it won't transfer to the main game if there is gold) and likely no achievements either. It also appears that these will be rented servers as well from all the comments I've seen from Rare regarding this.

The game is never going to have a solo mode or a pure PvE mode as that goes completely against the game's design. It is meant to be a multiplayer game best played with a crew where the goals and intentions of the other players is not known. that is what sets the game apart, without that it would be a shallow game with little challenge. It can be played solo (I've played over 95% of my time in the game that way) but takes a different mindset and skillset to do. It is the hard mode of the game.

My favorite game of this generation!!!! love it passionately <3 for those asking if you can play solo, yes, just turn off cross-platform and you will play with Xbox players only. Just so you know that it will be harder and you have to be smarter about it. It's no fun when you are sailing and others attack you or the Kraken shows up - sometimes both will happen at the same time and you have to be ready for it as a solo player. What's worse than Kraken? ghost ships, those are brutal and will sink you in seconds if you are solo and you aren't smart enough to defeat them.

@Atzenkiller: He is implying that the Xbox only servers are "easy" and more peaceful...but he is incorrect in that assumption. It has been my experience that some of these Xbox only sessions have more trigger happy pirates in them than the REAL servers (plus I play on an Xbox and solo), but while they are more inclined to combat they aren't very good at it to be honest (so in a sense it is easier). I have had more peaceful journeys on the cross play servers than the Xbox only ones )and I make sure when I am on the Xbox only ones I am as bloodthirsty as possible to those that thought they would be safe there).
