Scalebound Originally Had Dinosaurs, Not Dragons

The game was one of Platinum's first ideas after the company originally formed.

Scalebound director Hideki Kamiya has revealed that the idea for the game has been percolating at Platinum Games since the developer's earliest days. The concept for game--"large-scale" encounters--remained the same over the years, but an earlier version had dinosaurs, not the dragons we know today.

"After I left Capcom and we established Platinum Games, the kernel of the Scalebound idea was actually one of the first concept pitches," Kamiya told Metro. "The other one was Bayonetta, and we had a few others. For one reason or another we went with Bayonetta first, but at that point it was not even dragons; it was dinosaurs."

"But the common theme here is that I wanted to realize this game in the way that these two large-scale creatures were going at each other," he added. "And how can we make this work where you are not just the observer of what's taking place but helping as well."

That was the original concept for what would become Scalebound, but Kamiya admitted that "it needed more work." The game was put back on the shelf as Platinum worked on Bayonetta, after which the studio turned its attention back to the game and made a major creature change.

"So at that time we actually managed to pull together a prototype, and when we decided to make a prototype I switched over the subject matter from dinosaurs to dragons," he said.

Kamiya and his team put together a new prototype, this one featuring dragons, but the project never got off the ground because Platinum didn't find a publishing partner.

"So again, it went back into the closet," he said.

With Scalebound stalled again, Platinum shifted its focus to The Wonderful 101 for Wii U. After that game shipped, Platinum put together a "refined" version of the concept for Scalebound and pitched it to Microsoft.

"Fortunately, they were very interested, and they wanted to know more about it," Kamiya explained.

Scalebound launches in 2016 exclusively for Xbox One. At Gamescom earlier this month, Platinum confirmed that the game will have four-player co-op.

It's kind of a thin line between dragons and dinos. Dragons fly, but then some dinos do as well. There's the whole fire breath thing, too, I guess. Whatever. It would've been funny if they did go with dinos because then it would basically be Horizon, right? Regardless, I feel like we're in for a lot of comparisons between Scalebound and Horizon.

***And yes, I am being sarcastic when I say the games are the same. I know they're not at all. One is a linear hack n' slash RPG essentially, while the other (Horizon) is more of an open world RPG it appears. We shall see though.

@reduc_ab_: I think they said they showed off a linear mission. They did say that you can fly around the map on your dragon.

Actually I think that Scalebound and The Last Guardian have more in common but you are right though Horizon is pretty close. I'm sure all 3 will release around the same time and there will be much comparison between the 3.

@Marky360: One of the main differences I can see is that in Scalebound the dragon is your friend, while in Horizon it appears so far that the dinos are all your enemies.

@ChiefReaver: Pterosaurs flew. No, these are not technically considered dinosaurs. But they did live among the dinosaurs and looked a hell of a lot like dinosaurs.

Hope it turns out good, but looks already freaking annoying with its small cutscenes. I had enough of how Diablo 3 pulled that crap, so maybe that is why its a instant turn off. It just has that D3 smell now, so i would stay away if i did own a XB1 even until I get a good look at the game (which goes for every game these past years).

Looks like its an annoying, mindless hack n slash, and about da graphics kind of game.

Fun concept makes me wish it was coming to PS4 as well (just ordered one this week), but as others have said Horizon gives a similar vibe, so thankfully I wont be missing out too much on the puny human v behemoth battles. I hope these games give a similar sense of scale as shadow of the colossus did, I loved that game. And on the topic of the headphones it kinda feels like they got the idea from Guardians of the Galaxy lol.

Little known fact- headphones actually existed before GOTG. GOTG was not even the first comic book movie last year to feature them prominently.

Hopefully this game ends up being decent, although the demo they previously displayed left me feeling a little underwhelmed given how easily the PC cut his way through most of the enemies.

Trash comment section as usual. Anime/otaku freaks who thinks japanese voice acting on any character is a plus, idiot fanboys and character bashing because of either accent, apparel or just overall style. Typical, nothing to see here.

@chromegroar12: It's nice that you had something constructive to add. Also, try not to bring up subject matters you obviously know very little about, such as VO/Dub debates, doing so only gives the impression of a jaded individual.

Are these the same developers who made Vanquish? That's my favorite third-person shooting game on the ps3.

They made Bayonetta 1+2,Vanquish,Mad World,Anarchy Reigns,Metal Gear Revengeance,Infite Space and the Wonderfull 101.
I think they made also Korra (average at best) and will be working on Nier 2.

it's a good thing they went the dragon route seeing as horizon is going to one up scalebound in every possible way... scalebound would have looked like a cheap imitation by comparison. as a long time fan of platinum games, i have to admit that the footage of scalebound we have seen so far looks very underwhelming.

@Xristophoros: Yeah. I wonder how long Scalebound was in development for though? Can't find a source.

I'm sure they're not trying to imitate one another though. Its not like MS and Sony have spies that go to the other company to see what they're doing.

That would be funny, though. lol

@xenomorphalien: yea, it must be a coincidence... dinosaurs have become popular of late as a result of the new jurassic park movie i guess... the timing couldn't have been better for horizon. dragons are always cool i guess, but we don't get enough of them in the media. game of thrones and the hobbit are the exceptions :D

@Xristophoros: I do think Horizon looks like the better game overall but they aren't even slightly similar, Scalebound is a Hack n Slash RPG with dragons, Horizon is a open world full on RPG with TPS gameplay. Both look different, both play different and both are going for different things.

That said I was underwhelmed by Scalebound reveal, but if the gameplay is deeper than it appears and the world epic then I'm sure it will be great too

@Xristophoros: I'm not sure on your logic, Platinum studios is easily the more talented developer of the two. Guerrilla has beautiful looking games, but fails in every other regard.

When you see the Platinum logo at least you know it's worth buying.

I honestly don't agree with that the Killzone series is top notch one of the best 1st-person shooter series out there but Platinum on the other hand have worked on a myriad of different games all that are drastically different in different genre's so Platinum is definitely the veteran team. With that being said though I expect both games to be top notch Triple A experiences.

@RSM-HQ: when platinum is focused on a project, i agree, they are one hell of a developer. lately, they have been involved in a bunch of half assed titles, though, including: legend of korra, transformers and star fox. they all look like junk to be perfectly honest. not only that, but part of the studio is also working on nier over and above scalebound. i think they are spreading themselves too thin and losing their focus. i have a bad feeling about scalebound all things considered. it will be designed to cater more to a western market so i don't expect to see vanquish, metal gear rising or bayonetta like similarities in any way as far as the gameplay is concerned.

I wouldn't say catering to a western audience is a bad thing most Japanese games now a days are pretty stale and archaic an only a few Japanese studios have evolved from the old way of thinking. Platinum definitely seems like one of those studios.

@Xristophoros: Technically if they kept dinosaurs in the game instead of dragons Horizon would look like a imitation since scalebound was revealed before it. Also how can you even tell which one will one up the other we still don't know much about either and both haven't even released yet for them.

@rasdorx: based on my first impressions and gut feeling... scalebound is a "fake" platinum game in the sense it is designed for the western market first and foremost... the eccentric, japanese style of their other games will be missing. horizon was one of the most refreshing games at e3 and has loads of potential in my opinion.

A new IP is always good to see. Looks interesting, it has scale and solid hack-and-slash, should be worth a try. Can't remember the last time I played a game with an interesting lead so I really don't care much for the main character demeanor/character, not sure why people are putting so much emphasis on this.
