You can usually find a good deal or two on the Switch Eshop, but it's rare to see a huge collection of notable Switch games discounted at the same time. Fortunately for Switch players, that time has come: the Spring 2020 Eshop sale has arrived, with tons of Switch games currently on sale. Quite a few publishers have gotten in on the action over the course of the month, and there are some real gems worth snagging while they're still on sale. All of these deals are ending in just a couple of days, so make sure to grab your favorites fast.

Capcom currently has several of its games available for cheap. A lot of the games are for 3DS games, but you can grab recent ports of longtime favorites like the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy and Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen for $15 each (down from $30), as well as every Resident Evil game on the platform, including Resident Evil for $15 and Resident Evil 4 for $20. Capcom's sale ends tonight at 11:59 PM PST.

I don't have my Switch yet, it's on preorder, but I want to buy one of those eShop games. Would it be better to setup my Nintendo account on the Switch rather than online?

Part of Nintendo's problem is that they don't price drop anything, ever, even when other stores do. Bloodstained for $28, down from $40? 30 seconds of googling tells me that Best Buy, Walmart, and Amazon sell it for $30, and Gamestop has it listed for $20. Why on earth would I buy it from Nintendo?

@brightamethyst: Because game developers are going to make their money one way or the other. Fact is that most games can no longer make a profit at prices that haven't gone up in over a decade.

With this in mind, this means that they've got one of two choices: 1) Either keep the games at their release price for longer (like they used to do back in the day) or 2) Load the games up with cash shops and microtransactions.

Despite what anyone one particular person's preference is, arguments can easily be made for both methods because neither option is inherently evil or wrong-- they are just two very different ways of handling the issue of how game creators make enough of a profit to stay in business.

For the "never go on sale" model, people forget that this was the norm back in the beginning as video games had no idea how else to price their products so, they looked to the only other comparable model at the time: books.

Hard copy books don't drop in price simply because the book is older, quite the contrary, the price of the book is the price of the book is the price of the book. In this model, the profits of the first copies of the item go towards recooping the losses from production.

Upside to this model is that once you buy the game, if you're going to open your wallet afterwards, it's going to be for extra content such as levels, etc that the developers make after the initial release. In other words: You run 0 chances of coming across a $20 charge for better armor. Downside to that model is that, alas, yeah, the game is going to cost more when you go to buy it.

In the second model, that of putting the monetization for the game into the game itself, the thinking is that "whales" (those who spend a lot of money in the cash shops) pay more so that others can pay less. The upside is that, yes, the price of the game itself is cheaper but, the downside is that there will be valuable items and/or features locked behind a paywall. This means that people with deep pockets or who are willing to be "nickel-and-dimed" are going to be at a distinct advantage when playing that game to those who do not pay extra.

Again, there's no inherent evil in either method but, yeah, alas, them's the choices.

@dlist4ever: talk about missing the point... why spend the time to write a wall of text so obtuse? His point had nothing to do with retail game prices, or even "game developers" in general. He is asking why the Nintendo eshop is regularly more expensive than buying a physical copy of the same game elsewhere. He even gives an example, so I'm not sure how you can be so oblivious...

Anywho, the correct answer is multifaceted:

A. Nintendo knows that our instant gratification consumer culture will often spend $10 more for the ease of being able to DL a game RIGHT NOW!

B. The price differential actually has more to do with the motivation of the physical sellers. At some point having a large stock works against them, as they are paying for the space to hold the physical copies of the game. It's in their best interest to get rid of them faster, even if it's with a slim-to-nonexistant profit margin. It costs Nintendo nothing if people aren't buying, say, Sword Art Online Fatal Bullet which is still somehow $60 on the eshop. You'll say, "but it's costing them in potential sales!" but that's not how companies look at it once a game is past its initial burst of popularity. Brick and mortar stores who have piles of unsold boxes definitely want to just get rid of them, so they start slashing prices.

I'm picking up The Touryst because I saw a video about it on Digital Foundry.

It's a pity there's no mention about it in the slightest here.
