As part of S3's continued expansion, the company announced today that it plans on acquiring video card manufacturer Number Nine. The Lexington, Mass-based company has historically manufactured its own video chipsets, but has recently been integrating S3's Savage chips onto its boards.

"Over the past year, we have been working with IBM to build a long-term business relationship based on a supplier agreement with Number Nine," said S3 CEO Ken Potashner. "We expect that our acquisition of Number Nine's assets will enable us to streamline this business model and further strengthen our direct relationship with IBM."

No purchase price or date of the sale has yet been given, although both S3 and Number Nine are expected to make some sort of announcement in January. We'll keep you updated.
