Rugrats Revival Series With Original Voice Cast Coming From Paramount+

Rugrats, the popular ’90s Nickelodeon cartoon about a group of toddlers, is getting a 3D CGI revival. The new show will be released by Paramount+, ViacomCBS’s revamped version of its CBS All Access streaming platform.

The news confirms steady rumors last fall about a new Rugrats reboot. Check out a first look trailer for the show below.

A release accompanying the announcement doesn't add much more information beyond the fact that the series is on its way--a similar handling of the ViacomCBS’s announcement of a new Beavis and Butt-Head movie, which didn't even specify if series creator Mike Judge is involved. In the above trailer, it looks like Rugrats has not changed the formula much, and many of the original voice actors are returning. We only hear Tommy, Chuckie, and Angelica speak, and only see twins Phil and Lill, as well as Susie. Reptar also makes an appearance.

As is expected with revivals and reboots of well-regarded franchises, fans are divided about the little we've seen so far of this new version of Rugrats. Screenrant has a pretty comprehensive dive into where opinions are split, though the disagreements fall on predictable lines like uncertainty over the art style, whether the show will resonate with non-'90s kids, and if it will make the same missteps as other series that have made the leap to 3D CGI.

It should also be noted that Rugrats is no stranger to revivals and reboots. Aside from shows that have been proposed and never quite off the ground, ones that have seen the light of day include All Grown Up! (which ran for five seasons from 2003 to 2008) and Rugrats Pre-School Daze (a 2006 miniseries comprised of four episodes).
