Rugby Challenge entering the maul in Q3 2011

In a world dominated by Madden NFL and FIFA Soccer, it's difficult for Aussie sports games to compete, given the relatively small market to make money from. While the last few years have seen several cricket and rugby league games arrive to mixed critical response, it's now time for the other rugby--rugby union--to see its first game since 2008.

Developed by Sidhe Interactive out of Wellington in New Zealand, Rugby Challenge will be released in Q3 of 2011 on the PC and consoles. At this stage it is unknown which consoles the game will be released on specifically, with Rugby Challenge publisher Home Entertainment Suppliers refusing to spell out specific platforms.

At this stage, exact details about Rugby Challenge are fairly scarce, but according to the game's official website, it will feature licensed teams like the All Blacks and the Qantas Wallabies. Teams from both the ITM Cup and Super Rugby (commonly known as the Super 14) leagues will also be making an appearance in the game. Sidhe has also confirmed that Rugby Challenge will support online multiplayer, as well as a multiyear franchise mode and real-time commentary.

Sidhe has previously worked on Rugby League 3 for the Wii, as well as Shatter and Gripshift for Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network.
