The CW's Arrowverse is undergoing another major shake up, and this one is a bit less planned than the shared TV universe's annual crossover event. Newcomer Ruby Rose, who played the titular role of Kate Kane in Batwoman, is leaving the show after one season, Deadline reports. The role will be recast for Season 2 and beyond.

Rose issued a statement explaining that while she has "the utmost respect for the cast, crew, and everyone involved" she will not be returning for the next season. "I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created. Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success – I am truly grateful."

In turn, Berlanti Productions and WBTV confirmed that the role will be recast and that both the production company and network are "firmly committed" to Batwoman's long-term future. They also stated that the new actor will be part of the LGBTQ+ community, a key factor for the character of Kate Kane, one of DC Comics' most prominent queer characters.

Batwoman Season 1 concluded this week with a finale episode cliffhanger establishing a new villain for Kate to face off against in the future. Season 2 is set to premiere sometime in January of 2021, but it is unknown whether the recasting process will lead to delays.
