Rockstar titles have now shipped 250 million copies to date
Publishing label reaches new shipment milestone following release of Grand Theft Auto V.
Rockstar Games titles have now accounted for more than 250 million lifetime shipments, parent publisher Take-Two Interactive announced during last night's earnings conference call.
This includes not only Grand Theft Auto games, but titles across Rockstar Games franchises like Max Payne, L.A. Noire, Bully, Midnight Club, and Red Dead, among others.
As you'd expect, the Grand Theft Auto franchise leads the way, having shipped 125 million copies before the launch of Grand Theft Auto V. When you factor in that game's 32.5 million shipped copies, the total is now at least 157.5 million units.
The Grand Theft Auto series is unique in the industry, as every new installment performs better than the last. This is because Take-Two has designed the series to be "permanent," CEO Strauss Zelnick said previously.
"Our view is it's hard to make permanent intellectual properties if you annualize it, with the exception of sports titles," Zelnick said in November 2012. "So far that's proven to be the case. IP that is annualized eventually seems to hit the wall and we don't want our IP to hit the wall."
Also during the earnings call, Take-Two management addressed GTAV for PC, with president Karl Slatoff saying, "At this point there is really nothing for us to say about that."
