Rockstar North Is Hiring For Development Of A Next Gen Open-World Character Driven Game

They want someone to help "developing advanced animation systems for large open-world character-based games."

Rockstar North, the developer of Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, recently released Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC, giving us a glimpse at what the team might be able to do with next generation technology. Now current job listing on their website suggests that they're looking into the next generation very seriously, as they're currently seeking a programmer that can assist in building animation systems for a next generation open-world game.

The listing, spotted by PlayStation Universe, is for an Animation Systems Programmer. As part of the job description, Rockstar North states, "we are looking for an experienced, talented engineer to help us in developing advanced animation systems for large open world character-based games." Further down, under the subheading "What We Do," it says that Rockstar is "a global team of programmers and researchers who collaborate on pushing the boundaries of character animation on next generation hardware."

This is the first explicit reference we've seen to Rockstar North working on something for next generation consoles. Their output has slowed during this generation: Red Dead Redemption 2 is the only completely original game that the developer has released for the PS4 and Xbox One, alongside an improved version of Grand Theft Auto V. Both titles feature online modes that have made Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, a lot of money from microtransactions.

While it's feasible that Rockstar North is developing a next gen version of Red Dead Redemption 2, the language used in the job listing suggests that they're working on something entirely new. They're looking for someone to "develop, maintain, extend, and support an extensive high-level runtime animation system, pipeline, and tools," and to "implement well designed, robust, highly optimal new animation system features, integrating them into our existing animation, gameplay, and AI systems."

The most likely next release from Rockstar North would be Grand Theft Auto 6. It's been five years since the PS4 and Xbox One release of Grand Theft Auto V, which arrived about a year after the Xbox 360 and PS3 version. Grand Theft Auto V has sold over 115 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games of all time--a sequel seems inevitable.

If it is gta it's goddamn time. These huge waiting periods between games just kinda suck. But whatever, I'm not at all hyped for a new gta game anyway.

And I bet the next GTA will have the same shitty PS2 era control scheme again. Simply because Rockstar can't get away from it. It's just so awesome to only be able to walk around slowly, as if you were playing with mouse and keyboard with no analog controls, and having to hold down or mash a button to move faster. Why would anyone would to change that?

Maybe it's time they finally hired someone new for that, huh?

@Atzenkiller: It seems like it's something they're doing on purpose. Making you put that extra effort in in order to feel that it's a difference between walking and running. And I'm saying it's on purpose because the walking has different speeds based on how you hold the analog stick, so they do have the functionality in place, they just choose to only let you walk with the analog.

@livedreamplay: Of course they're doing it on purpose. But what is that purpose when many or most games since the PS2 era had fully analog controls? If I wanted to walk slowly I could just do that by only tilting the stick a little. No other game makes you hold down a button anymore just to move any faster than a snail. And even the AC series, which also used to have this, was using the R2 button for it from what I remember. But they've thankfully gotten rid of it as well. Only Rockstar keeps using this medieval control scheme and I see no logical reason or benefit to it. Or do you ever walk around slowly in this game at all? Fully analog controls sure would make your life easier in every single situation. But my guess is that it would have required more work for them with regards to the animations and everything. Or they for some reason just couldn't get it to work properly with fully analog controls. But gimping the player like that consciously makes zero sense.

@Atzenkiller: I'm not saying whether Rockstar's decision is a good or bad one, personally, it's too small for me to care, however "No other game makes you hold down a button anymore just to move any faster than a snail" is not a good argument for you. Being the one that's doing this differently doesn't mean that you're not doing the right thing. And I wouldn't say "zero sense", the idea behind it makes sense, the question is whether it's worth it to make it harder for the player in such a minor aspect, or do you just do what everyone else does and give up on the idea...

@livedreamplay: Dude, what the **** are you even talking about? Why do you think pretty much every other game has had full analog controls for decades now? Because it's just what everyone else does? Are you serious? Analog sticks have been a great invention, and something that PC players playing with mouse and keyboard are still lacking. For them there is indeed only the option to toggle between walking and running. RDR2 is pretty much designed for that. But there is zero sense in having the same limitations for consoles. It is way superior to be able to control your movement speed by tilting the stick to varying degrees. There is zero benefit in having to hold down a button close to 100% of the time just to move around. Or do you ever walk slowly in RDR2? With full analog controls you can still do that of course. The only people who could have a problem with this ultimately are those who like any fine motoric skills and are only able to tilt the analogs as far as they can. But that's a different issue and I see no reason to cater to those folks. No one else does it either. Those peple can learn to use the sticks with more precision, but there is absolutely nothing a normal person can do to improve the controls in RDR2.

@livedreamplay: Agree , I think it's by definition as well.

I wasn't worried about the walking , but the rag doll was great in GTA V
