Rockstar Games Boss Dan Houser Leaving The GTA And Red Dead Developer

Rockstar's VP of creative is leaving the company.

Dan Houser, the vice president of creative at Rockstar Games--developer of the GTA and Red Dead Redemption series--is leaving the company.

The news was shared by Rockstar's parent company Take-Two in an SEC filing, which comes just days before Take-Two delivers its latest earnings report. A brief statement reveals Houser had been on an "extended break" beginning last spring and that March 11, 2020 will be his final day with the studio.

"We are extremely grateful for his contributions. Rockstar Games has built some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful game worlds, a global community of passionate fans and an incredibly talented team, which remains focused on current and future projects," Take-Two said.

Along with his brother Sam, Dan Houser was one of the co-founders of Rockstar, which has become one of the world's biggest game developers on the strength of the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead series. Rockstar recently revealed that Grand Theft Auto V was the best-selling game of the last decade in the US, based on dollar sales. Despite being released in 2013, the game remains a juggernaut thanks in part to ports to current-gen consoles and PC, as well as the continued development of GTA Online. That same announcement confirmed that Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar's most recent release, was the best-selling game of the last four years in the US, again based on dollar sales.

We have reached out to Rockstar for further comment and will report back with anything we receive. A spokesperson for Rockstar Games told GameSpot that Dan House's brother, Sam Houser, remains with the company as its president. "Sam Houser’s role with Rockstar Games, which he founded in 1998, remains unchanged," Rockstar said.

Interesting, he's been on extended leave since March 2019. Hopefully it isn't health related, but that's a huge loss for Rockstars creative pool. Then again, if you get someone talented, it could bring a breath of fresh air to the GTA series. Hard to replace though.

RIP R* and GTA, thanks for the good times. Now I have no doubt that if GTA VI ever surfaces, it will be mediocre when compared with the previous works of R*. . .losing Benzies was a big enough dent.

Who will take over? This could quickly be the end of the quality product.

Here's to hoping Dan throws together a new series that puts GTA V to shame.

R.I.P Rockstar. Your time is over. You are gonna die a slow and painful death.

Regards to Dan Houser. The guy knew his Titanic was about to sink, and jumped before it happened.

Thanks for the memories, Dan.

I grew up with the GTA series. Even though the story of GTA5 was not as good as the previous entries (IMO), I consider the franchise to be one of the best ever in gaming.

can't blame him. Rockstar has changed a lot over the years. Can't imagine it now much resembles the R* of 10, 15, let alone 20 years ago

Going out on a high note. To think that before GTA IV was released, we almost had EA buy Take-Two. Now they are printing money with GTA Online.

Fooook!

That’s a real blow I think. Similar to Benzies though. Extended break and then leave, but with his pockets full.

Hmmm..."extended break"? That can mean many things, not sure if any of them are good.

Best of luck to him either way; if he stays in the industry, I hope he makes something that isn't GTA.
