Rockstar Considered GTA: Tokyo, GTA 6 in Production - Report

Grand Theft Auto 6 is reportedly in the "preliminary" stages of production.

A source speaking with TechRadar has revealed some interesting details about Grand Theft Auto's past and future. First, the unnamed source told the site that Rockstar Games was considering making a "full" Grand Theft Auto game set in Tokyo and even sent staff to the Japanese city for a research trip.

The trip, which is said to have involved taking pictures and speaking with locals, took place "several years ago," around the time of GTA III and Vice City, the source said. Though Rockstar was reportedly "serious" about making a GTA game set in Tokyo, the idea was scrapped for a couple major reasons.

No Caption Provided

From the TechRadar report:

"The road system was seen to be problematic and became one reason the idea was canned...Our source added that, as time has gone on, Rockstar has realized the difficulty in moving Grand Theft Auto outside of the USA, where it has firmly embedded itself. There are a number of series staples, from brands to cars, that Rockstar would likely have to change if a future GTA was set somewhere else."

TechRadar also points out that Rockstar parent company filed trademark applications in 2003 for GTA: Tokyo, as well as GTA: Bogota and GTA: Sin City. None of those ever materialized. Trademark applications do not necessarily mean much, as Activision has also trademarked Call of Duty: Space Warfare and Future Warfare, among other things, that never came to light.

The site's source also said "preliminary" work has started on Grand Theft Auto 6. However, a location for the game has not been chosen yet, but, if the source is right, it will probably be in the United States.

Rumors of Rockstar working on a new Grand Theft Auto game are not all that surprising. Take-Two has labeled the franchise "permanent," which basically guarantees new entries in the series are coming. Additionally, former Rockstar boss Leslie Benzies said in the past that Rockstar has "some ideas" for Grand Theft Auto 6. There is a clear business opportunity to make a sixth mainline game, as the latest entry, 2013's Grand Theft Auto V, has shipped more than 60 million copies.

It doesn't sound like Rockstar needs to rush it with the next mainline GTA game, either, as GTA V's money-making multiplayer mode GTA Online continues to be incredibly popular.

We have reached out to Rockstar for comment on the source's claims and will update this post with anything we hear back.

I say go back in time again. 40's, 50's, 70's...all great eras to rehash. Perhaps 60's - 70's Vegas?

America has an unhealthy obsession with Japanese stuff. That is why everyone buys clothing brand SuperDryJPN despite the fact that the company is a bunch of white folks in Europe.

Tokyo would have been bad.
Sure, nice city... but I don't need a game full of all asians & asian stereotypes.

A blend of Toronto/Vancouver would be nice, but I don't think any video game has ever used Canadian cities as a setting.

GTA - Border Wars.

The setting is Texas, Nevada, Louisana , and Mexico.

You start your story in Texas and get robbed and stabbed and left to die in the streets of Houston, Tx. When you awake your in a Mexican gang bangers drug house demanding how you knew the punk that robbed you. You then kill the kidnappers except for 1. She promises you money in Las Vegas, Nevada. You both go to Sin City...win millions. Then get ambushed and your money is gone ...not only your money ...but her. You all have had quite a few Grand Theft Auto situations that have brought you closer together on the way there. You will do anything to make sure she is safe . You travel to the Big Easy New Orleans, Louisiana, to talk to her brother and see if he can help you find her. MYou find out she is in Mexico and then the real fun begins. Not bad right ?

( and border wars is a nod to the outstanding Chinatown wars )

Can we please get back to ONE protagonist? Or at least 1 MAIN guy with 2 other supporting characters? It was really hard to get into the story in a way that it wasn't in IV. "You are Niko Belik" made sense. You are "Michael, Franklin, and Trevor" didn't. Just hurts the role-playing, imo.

@Ghosthunter54:

The character switching was my number 1 complaint about V, sure it was a cool idea but it f*cked up the story aspect and just took you as the main player out of the game! I get the idea R* were trying to do however i feel it would've worked had they kept the story and you as the gamer centered on just 1 of the characters and only allow character switching on missions.

@Ghosthunter54: Yup.

No more switching between 3 main characters. Make 1/2 main characters (male/female?) and add 2 or more as game extensions/dlc.

I more or less just got pissed at Trevor being useless at making serious money. Also, he was always somewhere remote and in a dress/underwear. Funny at first, annoyingly frustrating when getting further into the story. Should have been a supporting character always getting into trouble. Not a playable character.

@Ghosthunter54: I liked 4 better also, switching between characters just had no substance. I didnt care who I was playing as, it was just a mess that made no real sense. Niko kept developing and felt much more meaningful.

@juboner: Hate to break it to you but, Niko didn't develop in GTA IV, if anything, Niko's journey through Liberty City completely decomposed him, he starts the game out as a hopeful new inmigrant and by the end of the game he's just broken and disillusioned by "the american dream"

Not to mention he's the biggest hypocrite in the franchise's history

@roler42: That is developing his story, just in a negative way. The supporting characters where far better also and developed way beyond what 5 did. Niko did act like he was a lot more moral than the people and situations that he got himself into. But the story is that all the work he could get or whatever for an immigrant was illegal, plus it made the game funner.

Sidequest missions where better in 4, driving physics where better and more challenging. Actually making you have to develop finesse at driving. Cars dont handle the way 5 simulates the physics, except maybe some of the sport cars.

5 was dumbed down by adding the 3 main characters. You could call up the friends and work acquaintance you met all parts through the game and at least they would have something to say about how their situations where developing. Not so in 5.

The dlc in 4 was great, including Gay Tony (or whatever his name), and the motorcycle gang part.

@RawhideSphinx: Niko had a personality but the game used the supporting cast too make the situations he got in much more interesting. Niko was the more level headed reasonable criminal compared to his friends or crime partners.

I continue to be surprised by what constitutes a news story nowadays. What was the news? That Rockstar considered a Tokyo edition? This was speculated about over a decade ago with the trademark they registered. That Rockstar is working on GTA 6? 60 million in sales is all the evidence needed, you can leave the quotes of an uninformative source where they belong: on TechRadar.

No, no no no. Leave GTA on the shelf for a while and focus on making the next Red Dead. That's what's up next on the Rockstar schedule. GTA V is still recent. Give us the next big wild west epic.

@bickle2: Red Dead and Bully still have a chance of being (almost certain for Red Dead) but L.A. Noire's studio was closed and it is extremely unlikely we will ever see a continuation of that series per sé.

@_Silent_Jay_: Yes, but it is no longer called Team Bondi. The studio was liquidated back in 2011. The staff moved on mainly due to Brendan McNamara being notoriously difficult to work with. Such a shame as I really enjoyed L.A. Noire.

Talking about San diego ever since Red Dead Redemption we haven't heard fom them, let's hope their are indeed making another Red Dead!

@55584623: RockStar North and San Diego work together on a lot of projects now, GTA V being the last one as I recall, therefore it is possible that they are either both working on Red Dead or perhaps another project. I really hope that it is Red Dead though, gamers are missing their old West fix.

Short of inhabiting an entire country, which the Crew has shown to be a viable option, there's really only 3 directions you can go with settings. You get the Los Angeles-style setting of country crossed with urban city, the New York-style setting of Expansive city setting, and a tropical setting. Other settings lack the gang-style environments that GTA needs to function. Snowy territories like what we saw in the GTAV prologue and heavy forested regions just don't have the population or activity that make GTA what it is.

We've had the first two in recent games and that really only leaves a remake of Vice City. We could opt for a straight-up remake and stylize it around Hawaii with all of its traditions and architecture or we could stylize it around Florida, which is an expansively long state like California is. The north is heavily forested, but also very country-ish and the south is a large cross between Swamp, Tropical, and City, so it offers a fair bit of diversity. Making it even better, they could easily include theme parks along with their recreation locations like Miami, Orlando, and the Keys.
