Rocket League Dev on Xbox One/PS4 Cross-Play: We've Got It Figured Out

Psyonix exec discusses all the benefits of uniting PS4 and Xbox One players.

Rocket League developer Psyonix Studios has discussed becoming the first game to support cross-network multiplayer between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, saying it has already figured out the technology necessary to bridge the two communities.

Speaking in an interview with GameSpot, Psyonix vice president Jeremy Dunham said the only thing left to work out was the politics of the arrangement.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Rocket League Dev on Xbox One/PS4 Cross-Play: We've Got It Figured Out

"The only thing we have to do now is sort of find out where we stand politically with everyone, and then it's full steam ahead to finish the solution that we've already started," he said.

"Technologically everything works, we've got it figured out, just a little bit of time to get everything up and running. Right now, excitement is the best way to put it. We just want to get in there and make it happen. Elation is probably another word I would use. We're just excited."

Although Microsoft has extended an invitation to other platforms and networks to connect with Xbox Live, Sony has not yet committed to opening up the PlayStation Network to Xbox players.

Continuing, Dunham said that connecting the Xbox One's Rocket League community with those on the PlayStation 4 and PC is important to the overall health of the game.

"There's this weird psychological thing that happens with people if you let them know that their community is small, even though they're enjoying the game and playing it.

"There's this weird effect where sometimes it encourages them to stop playing if they think nobody else is going to play with them, which creates a snowball effect where other people stop playing because they don't think anyone's going to play."

In addition to creating a larger pool of players, a shared community would also allow Psyonix to make new features and updates ubiquitous across all platforms.

"The more people you have to throw in there, the less likely that psychological anomaly will kick in. Then you have the actual reality of it, which is, more players, for everyone, means more games, and more games means more participation and community feedback, which we can then put into the game as a whole and not have to worry about siloing off certain features of certain platforms because this version doesn't have it, or whatever the situation may be."

As mentioned previously, Sony has not yet confirmed whether PlayStation players will be able to connect with Xbox One players. Currently, Rocket League's cross-platform connectivity will only bring together Xbox One and PC communities. The PlayStation 4 version also supports cross-platform multiplayer with PC.

"We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play," Sony said when asked for a statement on cross-network support.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy XI on PS2 and PC back in 2002."

Well, yeah, I am sure that they have it figured out. It's an online game that needs to share info between players on a constant basis. I am sure it formats it's data in a system agnostic way (I will guess XML but if it isn't that it's the same idea). So all they have to do is share it between users on different networks, which I am sure is just a small change on the side of their servers. We are not discussing rocket science here people, just rocket league. But good on them since the more people playing the better the game gets.

@flyinb11:Wii U, iOS, Android, 3DS. The fact that they don't specify is actually not at all avoiding saying Sony but allowing them to be open to others without having to say "not Sony". Currently, both MS and Sony don't say each other. But, only Sony has games that work with other platforms, including those I mentioned above.

Sorry, Gamespot doesn't let me reply to people, keeps erroring out. So, had to reply this way.

Hopefully Sony will open up to cross-play despite my doubts due to their history of not listening to the community

We've asked for incognito mode, have we gotten it? No (But there is an update coming up soon for it after 3 years)

We've asked for at least 1 AAA game in our monthly PS games, did we get it? No

We've asked for stable servers, have we gotten them? Kind of...It's been doing well so far...

My point is, Sony tends to go against the community but hopefully, they will go through with this

This will only get sorted if the companies talk outside of PR statements.

I also can't see how it can be anything other than a case by case considering its up to devs and publishers even if both consoles work something out.

I hope it happens.

Answer seems clear to me. Either the publisher (say EA as an example) provides neutral servers, or both Sony and Ms provide equal neutral servers to each side. In this case we are dealing with an indie dev that probably can't do that, so we have Sony and MS open their servers and share.

PS Plus hosted games work on Sony servers, and XBL hosted games work on Live.

Neither side has "opened up" their respective networks to either party. What type of journalism is this? You do realize that MS never even mentioned Sony in "opening their platform" right?

I swear.

@christophern4g: they said other consoles. What other consoles would they be referring to? They basically avoided saying the word Sony.

@flyinb11:

They also said that Xbox vs Xbox will always be an option but were not specific if that means separate Xbox servers or something else.

I hope this works out but a PR statement that's light on details isn't going to make it happen.

The key to this is the neutral, 3rd party servers. But they are right, now it is all up to the others if they want to do it. Msft wanted it to only be on xbl, which naturally nobody wants, so if msft agrees to neutral ground it is a step closer, though everybody else would have to ask "what do we gain by doing it, or not?". It's not what msft wanted, and it's really in sony's court to be magnanimous or to shut xbox out in kind to msft's response 3 generations ago.

@Mirimon78: Think outside the box. From Microsoft's point of view, this isn't just about "Xbox One users playing multiplayer games with PS4 users". Oh hell no, it's not that simple.

This is about the Xbox Live platform becoming a single entity on their console and Windows 10 PCs, and attempting to peel away users (and more importantly at this point, developers) from services like Steam. They're deeply lamenting their past inability to get a PC game storefront and multiplayer service up and running on a competitive and profitable level. Consider how embarrassing it is for the OS maker to not have a foothold in that market! Shareholders must be livid.

This is about Xbox Live the platform, Windows 10 Store the thinly-veiled walled garden, and UWP the 'environment control system' - currently flubbing its way through less than adequate PC releases on the Windows Store, clearly suffering from UWP's under-tested rush to market.

I'm not villainizing Microsoft's attempt to get cross-network play happening with Xbox Live, but you really need to read between the lines (and, as always, follow the money) to understand their overarching goals here for UWP and service platforms.

@runstalker: Well lets be fair, unless any of these companies Sony included start dishing out deals like Steam does, then nobody can touch that juggernaut, and honestly Id have it no other way.
