Rock Band Dev's VR Project Lets You Experience Music "Like Never Before"

After offering a tease earlier this week, Rock Band and Dance Central creator Harmonix today officially announced its mysterious project for Samsung's new Gear VR virtual reality device.

It's called Harmonix Music VR, and it promises to offer users a new way to hear and "experience" music. According to the project's announcement, it will offer a "fully immersive, music-drive dreamscape" that allows you to "experience your tunes like never before."

Using Harmonix's proprietary Music Analysis Engine, Harmonix Music VR can generate song-specific event sequences that you'll see when strapping the Gear VR headset to your face. "Sit back and relax, taking in the vibrant, musically responsive environment, or explore for even more audio visualizations set to your own tracks," Harmonix says.

Harmonix Music VR will launch this fall when Samsung's Gear VR headset is released. Unfortunately, Harmonix has not released any images or video that show what Harmonix Music VR actually looks like, so you'll have to use your imagination for now.

Gear VR is a collaborative effort from Oculus Rift headset maker Oculus VR--which is now owned by Facebook--and Samsung. The headset is unique in that it uses the newly revealed Galaxy Note 4 as its screen. Paired with the headset's adjustable lenses, the Galaxy Note 4's accelerometer and gyrometer are used to track head movement, in turn creating the feeling of virtual reality.
