River Rush revealed, Natal boxing, football games en route

Screenwriter James Gunn unmasks new game for Microsoft's motion-sensing accessory, a two-person rafting simulation; other genres hinted at.

First revealed at last year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Project Natal is planned to launch this coming holiday season. But while Microsoft has been keen to play up the potential of the controller-less motion-sensing system, it has been very tight-lipped about the games that use it. So far, the company has only revealed the virtual boy Milo, the role-playing game Fable III, the dodgeball game Ricochet, and an art game called Paint Party. (A modified version of Burnout Paradise was also used to demo the game but has not been confirmed as being in full-fledged development.)

Apparently Milo won't be the only Natal game involving water.
Apparently Milo won't be the only Natal game involving water.

This week, another Natal game was unmasked--but not by Microsoft. In a recent blog post, screenwriter James Gunn (Slither, Dawn of the Dead) gave his impressions of Natal, which he saw at a recent Los Angeles press event. The existence of one of the titles he describes, River Rush, had not been previously disclosed.

"It's a game where you stand side by side in a river raft, so it's two people playing at once," said Gunn. "To move right, you have to step right; to move left, you have to step left. As you rush down right rapids, you have to jump up and slap floating stars in the air--the whole raft jumps up every time you do. This game was even more exhilarating than [Ricochet], and even more aerobically challenging."

Gunn goes on to say that Microsoft reps told him that "boxing and football" games are also in development for Natal, but did not name any particular franchises. As an avid gamer and exercise enthusiast, the screenwriter thinks the motion-sensing add-on has the potential to help curb childhood obesity.

Last month, Microsoft announced that it will be hosting a dedicated "premiere" for Project Natal on June 13. The company is expected to announce a wave of Natal games at the event, which is the final Sunday before E3 2010 kicks off with Microsoft's main press event.

MS has hyped NATAL and then leaked an exorbitant price. So that when they release the real price it deserves (probably $50-$70)... ... people will think its a steal!! MS thinks we're that stupid ... ... Well, I'm not biting.

"football" as in a full fledged football game? That would be awesome! I smell the return of NFL FEVER series. One could only hope since I was never a fan of Madden. One hurdle is that NFL games can only be released by EA, so when does EA's exclusive deal with the NFL end? Or is it some gimmicky kids game or is it Madden with natal controls?

i may be just my views but i'm not so far interested in natal or sony's new eyetoy. i wait to be convinced and just hope they don't just shovel natal features into any game. i prefer sitting down relaxing with controller in my hand and playing video games. thats why i love my 360 and ps3. as a family we have a Wii which i use for mario and zelda etc but must admit it got wife and my young girls into gaming where my boys were born with a controller in their hand. natal has to be something special to make me consider buying it

I have a feeling I'll lose at least 10lbs the first week that Natal is released. I'm interested to see what football and basketball games they are released. If it's part of the NFL it'll be from EA. I'm also curious to see how much better the Milo program has turned out. It was kind of buggy at last years E3.

google project natal cpu hit and you will have a lot of articles to choose from. Another delema is lag. << LINK REMOVED >> WIth the CPU removed from Natal and the hit at at least 10% (Im guessing this if for the CPU to run the AI software)

@Ravenlore_basic CPU Power is'nt an issue. << LINK REMOVED >> [That is the last skeleton that’ll be skinned with garments, hair, and other features and shown in the game. Step five : Then it does this all over again30 times a second! As you move, the brain generates all possible skeletal structures at each frame, at last deciding on, and outputting, the one that’s most likely. This concept process takes just one or two milliseconds, so there’s masses of time for the Xbox to take the data and use it to manage the game.]

Microsoft removed the cpu for natal to reduce the price.Natal will be using the xbox 360's cpu so i dont think Natal will not cost more than $50-$75 & will not drain so much from the xbox 360's cpu maybe 1 cpu thread will be ok because if you've seen natal specs it not so complicated as you might think,it the software in it that makes it great. So dont worry natal games will still look great.

also you have to remember, the reason that motion controls are so successful is that anyone could use them. natal is all fine and good for most of us, but what about people who can't move their legs,or old people. for that matter i don't see myself ,after a hard of work or school, coming home and then jumping around some more.

@ parrot_of_adun Dont say no hardcore gamers want to play with natal because i am a die hard core gamer & i cant wait to get the experience of natal because i have idea of how natal will add to my gaming experience.Since it been confirmed that natal can track facial emotion & body reaction so i'll like to play especialy horror shooters where the AI's will react to my emotions & reaction to alter the gameplay experience.Natal is optional not by force like the wii, so if you dont like it dont buy it,but if you like it buy it.

@monson21502 are you sure? the last i heard microsoft was removing the cpu in natal to reduce the cost. anyway the success of natal will come down to one thing....price! it has to come out around $100, anything more than that in this economy could be trouble.

Natal is a concept that is too soon to implament due to the amount of CPU power it needs to work well. Next gen will be better for this to really be useful. . - . _ . . _ - . - still _ PS4 will use a TIME -OF- Flight camera like natal along with move controlers. There are other conpanies that have made devices simular to the one that 3DV made. Move takes up 1 spu to run smoothly while Natal takes up 1 CPU to run. Thus do not expect Xbox 360 games to look anywhere near as good.

Natal is one of those things that if done right, will be a true revolution in gaming. I wont hold my breath though. The industry has a habit of hyping these things up and letting us down.

@monkeysmoke That's just the problem, no hardcore gamers actually want to do any of that (myself included). I don't play shooters so that I can really feel like I'm actually killing someone, and if I wanted to play a sport, I'd just go outside, not sit inside gesturing to my xbox. Also, every single demonstration I've seen suggests that Natal is hilariously inaccurate (i.e. not capable of tracking the movement of individual fingers). The most potential I can see here would be to try and steal Nintendo's demographic of borderline gamers.

None of us will know for sure how well this is going to be utilized in games untill we have, 1.Actually tried it for ourselves. 2.Have givin it time to be utilized to it's fullest potential by game devs. (Just like almost every other piece of hardware on the market.) ^That part almost excites me the most, wondering where this will go in the future and what great things that could evolve from it. Sounds to me like alot of people are in the mind-set that a lack of a physical controller will equal out to 'less being less' rather than less = more. BUT, from what I have read and seen, this device will be able to detect so many points of reference on your body and in the play area that even individual fingers could be used in control-scemes. Now, if it actually works out that way? THINK of all the possibiliies... I'm not trying to convince people here. I mean, I have no stock invested in this product or anything, I just find it hard to understand why others are so quick to dismiss a technology that could literally change our gaming future, and for the better IMO... Not to mention, I'm betting any major title that comes out Natal compatible, will also have a regular control sceme option available. So really? WHAT is there to be negative about? (At least at this point :P)

You know what kind games best suited with Natal for adult audience? yes, AO rated games. I hope natal will be released for Windows too, because on windows there is freedom of speech unlike xbox censorship. Even the name natal rhyme with this kind of games. Don't blam

@flammable_zeus, i know about move.but do you know what it needs to work? its the ps3 eye. and it isnt very good. i bought it in 07 with eoj. it was fun but such a pain to get the eye to read my cards. i bet i got 20 loses online because i couldnt get the damn thing to read the cards. so i got timed out and lost the match.. i think they will make a new cam *eye toy 2* to help move. if not they will be in big trouble imo.

Games will give you the option to use Natal or not. So like Fable 3 of course will have the option. Then again the party games will probably not have the option because that's what Natal is for.

@TKandPBC That's what I'm looking forward to the most as well; a boxing game. The biggest hurdle will be whether they can make Natal closely mirror our movements in real time with as little lag as possible and as consistently as possible. If they can get that down by the end of this year, boxing will be a guaranteed win. However, if lag, consistency (and actual 1:1 movement) is something we won't see a major improvement on until the 2nd or 3rd generation of Natal software we could be hating Natal as much as the Wii waggling. :(

@ KuRf Can the Eye Toy recognize voice? Can you go through the menu with hand motions? Does it work on XBox 360? Can I do video to video chat with it over XBL? Can I scan everyday objects into an eye Toy? Thought not.
