Rise of the Tomb Raider Sales "Well Over" 1 Million

And that's the number of copies sold-through, not shipped, Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg says.

Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg has offered a bit more insight on the report yesterday where the company announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider sold 1 million copies this holiday.

In fact, the action-adventure game sold "well over" 1 million units, Greenberg said on Twitter, also confirming that the number represents copies sold through, not just shipped.

Rise of the Tomb Raider was one of four Microsoft-published Xbox One games that sold north of 1 million copies this holiday. The others were Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War Ultimate Edition, and Forza 6.

Some level of concern was raised Rise of the Tomb Raider's performance after the game was nowhere to be seen in the NPD Group's Top 10 report for November 2015. However, Microsoft later said the game has "done well," despite launching in a crowded window and on the same day as Fallout 4.

By comparison, Crystal Dynamics' multiplatform 2013 Tomb Raider reboot sold 3.6 million copies during its first month (a figure that was below Square Enix's targets), but went on to eventually sell more than 8.5 million units. That game is now the best-selling entry in the history of the Tomb Raider franchise.

There is a notable difference for Rise of the Tomb Raider, however. It launched in November exclusively for Xbox One and Xbox 360 by way of a partnership between Microsoft and Square Enix. The game will come to PC as early as this month and PlayStation 4 by the end of the year.

In other Rise of the Tomb Raider news, the game's Endurance mode launched last week, while even more expansions are planned for later in 2016.
