Rise of the Tomb Raider Dev Says Microsoft, Square Enix "Very Happy" With the Game

"Thanks for the concerns."

According to Rise of the Tomb Raider game director Brian Horton, both Microsoft and Square Enix are "very happy" with how the Xbox timed-exclusive adventure game turned out. Posting in a 44-page Tomb Raider forum thread about the game's unofficial sales, Horton said it's not his place to discuss business performance. He explained that he's more interested in review scores, which were generally strong.

"There was suggestion in the thread that the reported sales numbers reflect poorly on the dev team," he said (via NeoGAF). "Square/Microsoft are happy with Crystal and [co-developer Eidos Montreal] and the game itself. As to the topic of sales, I'm unqualified to discuss it so I won't have anything else to say on this thread."

In another message, he added:

"Microsoft and Square are very happy with Rise and the dev team, thanks for the concerns. Crystal and Eidos Montreal made a game we are proud of and we appreciate the overwhelming number of positive reviews and fan feedback."

Horton went on to say that the team is looking forward to The Game Awards this week, where Rise of the Tomb Raider is nominated for Best Action/Adventure game and Best Performance for Camilla Luddington, who plays Lara Croft.

"Hopefully it's just the beginning of the recognition Tomb Raider and Lara Croft receives this year," he said. "It's cool to see her on top again for the second game in a row. We're all fans and for me it's been the honor of my career to be a part of such a fantastic legacy. Next year 20th Anniversary!"

No official sales numbers for Rise of the Tomb Raider have been released. We'll have a better idea of how the game performed in December, when the NPD Group announces the top 10 sales chart for November 2015.

Rise of the Tomb Raider launched on November 10 for Xbox One and Xbox 360. The game comes to PlayStation 4 and PC in 2016.

It's such a good game! They really shot themselves in the foot by going exclusive AND launching on the same day as Fallout 4. Playstation players, don't pass on this game when it releases on your console. It's a great game and it's worth picking up.

I used to be one of those people saying that I would boycott this for being a console exclusive (despite owning an Xbox One and not a PS4), but I grew up and saw how good the game looked, so I bought it during the week of release. Besides, at least Microsoft was chill enough to only make it a timed exclusive unlike Sony with SFV (and yes, Microsoft did assist with developing TR). It's a great game, probably the best modern action game I've played for this gen at least. Amazing balance of combat, scavenging, puzzle solving, and exploration, and iI can't wait for it to come to PC so that more people can play it.

@AsKo25: SFV would not have been made if it wasn't for Sony, but will be released on the PC. Dead rising 3 will not be on the PlayStation thanks to Microsoft. As a fan of the Tomb Raider series I am going to boycott Rise Of The Tomb. I find myself angry that Square Enix makes a deal with Microsoft to exclude PlayStation 4 owners after Tomb Raider the definitive edition sale 69% on the PlayStation 4. With a combined sales of 8.5 million copies is enough money to make Rise Of The Tomb Raider. "Microsoft did assist with developing TR" don't believe in their PR corporate lies. You have a Xbox one and you can buy Rise Of The Tomb Raider, But what if you were a PlayStation owner?, or a fan like I am ( was one until now ) and don't have an Xbox one, would you buy this game a year latter? I am not buying Rise Of The Tomb Raider, and those of you saying how good this game is, is not going to change my mind.

The real issue is that the xbox one can't bring in the numbers needed to make this a hit, it has nothing to do with how good this game is.

I'll get it at $19.99 on a steam sale, they make me wait b/c they're greedy with exclusivity nonsense I'm not giving them $59.99 now, no way. I hope their sales are in the toilet, maybe they'll learn the next time around...

so disappointed they didnt release this on pc. A lot of people probably won't remember this game come 2016. I really doubt i'll waste my time with it in 2016 unless theres nothing at all else to do. Plus i rather not support the game company when they pulled such a greedy tactic by taking microsofts money and cutting out everyone else from playing it.

Right now I'm playing TR:DE on PS4 and aside from some minor flaws it feels great despite being a cross-gen game from a couple of years ago and I'm definitely looking forward to get this sequel after the end of its timed exclusivity. I just wish they bring back more elements from the bad-ass iconic Lara Croft we used to know in previous games like dual pistols, magnetic grapple, more extreme acrobatics in platforming and combat and of course larger breasts. The latter doesn't have to be a sudden illogical graphical change for it can be justified in the context of some happenings in the story for example like Lara having a baby which is also compatible with developers' new approach on portraying a more humane Lara Croft . Also a chilbirth sequence will make a hell of a survival-themed gameplay chapter with objectives such as searching the wilderness for firewood to boil water while the controller shakes with every contraction and even some of those button-smashing QTEs Crystal Dynamics seems to like so much for pushing the baby out with the voice actress's already tested talent in screaming and moaning being challenged to the highest possible point.

I never have, and never will purchase any timed exclusives. I don't know where you're goiing at with owning Sony products or whatever, but it has nothing to do with what we were talking about.

@Enlill: With full exclusives, you have a company that's developing games solely for a platform. This raises the game quality A LOT becauese the developers don't have to face multiple obstacles and have the same objective/vision.

With timed exclusives, the developers are doing the same things as if it wasn't an exclusive, but depriving the other platforms of playing it in order to get more money from one.

PS: "like Sony does it" ? Are you trying to make Sony look like a bad guy in this story? everybody has full exclusives. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, all have full exclusives.

@livedreamplay: PS4 and XBone are basically Steam boxes. Full PC hardware in a nice box, with a hand control.

I mention Sony because the only exclusives I've been interested have been on their console. We are all going 100 % subjective in this thread anyway.

@livedreamplay: It is relevant for full exclusives since it would be very cheap to release a ready made game on the other platforms which in turn would mean more money for every company included. Companies generally like to make money since it is their sole reason for existence.

Timed exclusives are done to promote a certain console. I see why they do that and as long as they do not complain about low sales before the game has been released on all intended platforms I see no issue with it. The PS4 being one year after seem a bit over the top though.

But I'll rest my case once The Last of Us and Bloodborne is released on PC. :P

@Enlill: In theory, you are right, but only in theory. You'll find multiple articles that explain why it's difficult to port games between platforms. Have a look.

Real pitty that games like Uncharted, The Last of Us or Bloodborne are not going to PCs at least, if not towards other platforms too. Eh, who knows, maybe at one point we'll see some sort of gaming globalization. :)

Why would it not be his place for director to talk sales? If he's happy with everything but the sales which he can't comment on, we can safely assume sales were underwhelming, otherwise he would talk about them positively, qualified or not.

They should have delayed it into early 2016. Releasing it the same day as FO4 was sending it out to die. I don't think it will even crack top 5 in the NPD sales report.

Tomb Raider fans have nothing to worry about. Remember that the first reboot took awhile to gain sales traction, and it became a very successful title. (Square-Enix initially thought the game was a failure, and they got egg on their face.) You'll see the sales figures climb fast when it's no longer an X-Box exclusive. And lets face it, Fallout 4 is the most likely reason sales figures have been tepid. Whose idea was it to try and compete with that release?

@JRLennis: That was Microsoft's idea.

Original TR was a failure until DE pushed it over into profitability. The payout from MS must have been huge for SE to accept an Xbox exclusive when the previous game which was on 3 platforms was considered a failure.

This game is even better than I thought it was going to be! Like its a really, really, fucking good action/adventure game. It trumps the original in every way, which is no small feat. This game is a must buy. Crystal Dynamics is absolutely killing it! I hope they reboot the Blood Omen series so bad.
