Rings Of Power Boss Unfazed By Announcement Of New Lord Of The Rings Movies

"We definitely think there's enough fan love to sustain [The Rings of Power] for a long time."

Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke is seemingly unfazed by the announcement from WB/New Line that it is developing additional The Lord of the Rings films. Speaking to Variety, Salke was asked how much LOTR would be too much to sustain the market, and she said, "We'll see."

Salke believes the Lord of the Rings fandom is big enough to sustain a number of different projects at the same time. "We love our original series. We're extremely proud of it, and invested long term. So, we definitely think there's enough fan love to sustain ours for a long time," she said.

The Rings of Power is currently under production for Season 2. Getting the show off the ground was one of Salke's biggest achievements as the head of Amazon Studios. As has been widely discussed, The Rings of Power is reportedly an extremely expensive production. As such, much has been made of its success in the market so far, which included reaching 100 million people right out of the gate.

Another Amazon Studios boss, Vernon Sanders, said previously that Amazon's investment into The Rings of Power has "more than paid off" already. Amazon is plotting five seasons of The Rings of Power, and the key creatives have them all mapped out so far, including the very last shot.

As for the new The Lord of the Rings films from WB/New Line, it's still very early days, but executives have said these movies--whatever they turn out to be--will not be remakes or retread ground already covered by Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.

A key difference between The Rings of Power and the new films from WB/New Line is that Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens--the Oscar-winning trio behind The Lord of the Rings films--have been briefed and are in discussions with WB/New Line about the new projects. They were left out of participation with The Rings of Power.

"For all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored on film. The opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor, and we are excited to partner with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure," WB said.

One Lord of the Rings film from Warner Bros. and New Line is already in production. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is an animated film about one of the legendary kings of Rohan, and is set 183 before the events of the original films, featuring Brian Cox and Mirando Otto as voice actors.

When Embracer acquired the film rights, it floated films about Gandalf, Aragorn, Galadriel, and Eowyn as potential, future projects.

As for the Lord of the Rings video game series, there are five new games set for release in the next two years, including The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, Return to Moria, Heroes of Middle-earth, and more.
