"Ridiculously Good-Looking" EA Sports UFC 2 Revealed With Ronda Rousey [UPDATE]

The previously unbeaten champion is knocked out by Holly Holm on Saturday night.

[UPDATE] Is the Madden Curse now extending to the EA Sports UFC franchise?

On Friday, EA announced Ronda Rousey as the cover star for EA Sports UFC 2. On Saturday night, the previously unbeaten fighter was knocked out by Holly Holm. There is no question that Rousey remains one of the world's premier UFC fighters, so we wouldn't expect this loss to affect her role in the upcoming game.

The original story is below.

Following EA's initial tease earlier this week, the company has now officially announced EA Sports UFC 2. The game will launch in spring 2016 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, featuring undefeated UFC champion Ronda Rousey--lover of Pokemon, World of Warcraft, and Game of Thrones--on its cover.

"As a gamer myself, it's pretty surreal to be on the cover of the game and to have a woman on the cover of a UFC game shows a lot of progress," Rousey said. "I'm really happy to be involved with it."

EA Sports UFC 2 adds some new modes not seen in the first game (released in 2014), including KO Mode and Ultimate Team. The game also boasts a revamped Career mode (which lets you create female fighters; the first game did not), as well as a new feature called Grapple Assist that helps players master their skills.

The first EA Sports UFC game was already gorgeous, but the sequel aims to take things like character likenesses and animations "to another level," EA said.

"The game being really, really, really, ridiculously good-looking is important to us" -- Senior producer Brian Hayes

"The game being really, really, really, ridiculously good-looking is important to us, and the team is always working to find ways to outdo themselves," EA Sports UFC senior producer Brian Hayes told GameSpot. "That includes updates to the in-game lighting, the facial animation system and lots of new physics and rendering details. It all comes together in the in-fight replays, where you can really see the fighter flinch a moment before a huge strike lands, sending ripples across their face, and how their hair whips around with the force of the blow.

In addition, UFC 2 boasts a new knockout physics system to deliver more realistic animations. You can visit the EA Sports UFC 2 website to get all the details about the game's new features.

In terms of EA Sports UFC 2's fighter roster, EA didn't share any names beyond Rousey at this point (who will be joined by another fighter on the game's cover), but says the game has the "biggest ever roster."

To go deeper into EA Sports UFC 2, GameSpot spoke with Hayes about improvements over the first game which GameSpot scored a 5/10), how microtransactions work in the new Ultimate Team mode, the inspiration for KO Mode, and more. Check out our complete interview below.

What was some of the feedback you received from the first EA Sports UFC and how are you applying those learnings to EA Sports UFC 2?

First and foremost, there was a lot feedback about how challenging the game was on the ground, or in the clinch. That wasn't exactly a complete surprise, because those facets of the sport are generally the most complex. But in hindsight, it was more challenging than we would have liked. So for UFC 2 we put a big focus on improving the grappling controls, providing a better on-boarding experience, and giving players plenty of ways to learn how to master the game. The other thing we heard from fans is that they wanted more experiences and deeper modes. So we went big on that, added five new modes and took a close look at our existing ones to make them more rewarding.

The first EA Sports UFC game was really gorgeous and had a lot of realistic physics features; how are you taking things forward with the sequel in terms of graphics and realism?

The game being really, really, really, ridiculously good-looking is important to us, and the team is always working to find ways to outdo themselves. That includes updates to the in-game lighting, the facial animation system and lots of new physics and rendering details. It all comes together in the in-fight replays, where you can really see the fighter flinch a moment before a huge strike lands, sending ripples across their face, and how their hair whips around with the force of the blow.

Did you have actual UFC fighters come in for motion-capture sessions to capture their faces and moves?

When possible, we love to do that, but it's often a challenge to sort out logistically. Also, doing mocap isn't exactly a bowl of cherries, so most often we work with local fighters and stunt performers for the more grueling week-long sessions. But these are people that have a great deal of physical ability, a real talent for mimicry, MMA skills, and a ton of patience.

The lack of support for female characters in create-a-character for the first game was something that a lot of people took issue with. What was behind the decision to deliver this feature in the sequel?

We're excited about the addition of women to create-a-fighter and Career Mode and we would have loved to do it for the first game. It was just that the timing of the UFC's addition of the women's bantamweight division came at a point in development when we were already well underway. Adding the women's division alone was very challenging, and create-a-fighter tools are far more complex. We just couldn't build the assets for a female create-a-fighter in time for the original game.

The Ultimate Team modes for other EA Sports games are ridiculously popular; how is this going to work in EA Sports UFC 2?

Hopefully, UFC Ultimate Team will be ridiculously popular too. It will obviously work a little differently than the other team-based sports when you get down to the details. But the basics are this: you can create up to 5 fighters in different weight classes, when you fight you earn coins, and with coins you can purchase packs of items to improve your fighters. One of our big strengths is individual athlete customization, there's a lot more of it in our game than you might find in other Ultimate Team experiences.

No Caption Provided

Some people also have concerns about microtransactions in Ultimate Team modes; how are you handling microtransactions for EA Sports UFC 2?

It's pretty straightforward. Everything in UFC Ultimate Team is attainable with coins you earn in-game. Or you can purchase alternate currency and use that to attain the same things. But there are also limits to what you can equip your fighter with based on performance, so you can't just buy all the best items and max out your fighter without earning your stripes.

KO Mode sounds pretty awesome; what was the inspiration for this?

Part of it was fan feedback. We heard from lots of people that they would play that way with their more casual friends; no ground game allowed, just KOs. And part of it was from testing the new KO physics system and capturing videos for internal review. We had a debug setting that turned on one-hit knockouts and ended up having these very quick, but very intense fights that always finished with a spectacular KO.

Hmm "how microtransactions work in the new Ultimate Team mode" nope not gonna bother, at least get the game a fan base before you start fleecing them for extra cash.

@# It's kind of sad. I'm a graphics whore myself, but would have rather he said: '' The game being really, really, really, ridiculously good-looking and fun to play is really important to the team.'' although that last bit might go without saying as it is a game...

@jthotty: You must have never seen her fight. Go ask Beth how she lost by an arm bar......oh wait, she got knocked out. You tried.

@Beasthunt: 3 Matches won by punches, rest were Arm Bar. Kind of like anonymous, they are "world class hackers" so instead they attack the KKK instead of hacking to relieve everyone of their debt...easy win. Just like Ronda, she found a easy won. Moving on.

@jthotty: so yeah, you don't know what you are talking about. Moving on....lol. Sounds like something your typical child who doesn't have a clue about what they are talking about says. Pretty pathetic. You should stick to talking about trilby's that you think are fedoras and leave the fight analysis to people who actually have been in fights.

So yeah, let's get back to showing you how terrible your recollection is. She beat Beth, another world class fighter, with her hands. Beat the absolute brakes off of her. She could have finished it on the ground, but she didn't, because unlike you, she knows how to fight, and beat her with her hands with a massive flurry of punches.

@Beasthunt: Depends on what fights you are talking about. with M16's, grenades, grenade launchers and SAW's, yes. But whatever you are trained on, that is instinct you are developed with. Kind of like with me, because I'm close to Fort hood, sometimes I hear a explosion at night. My instinct kicks in, and find nearest weapon (which its not there) and prepare for a fight. Her instinct will be to find the arm and try to break it. Hers is submission, mine is one shot one kill. She is a good fighter, and if her and I got into it yes, she would win; but depends what weapons we choose, fists or weapons. But she is exposed as people know what she is going to do, which makes her a stupid fighter. War is deception, she is essentially telling the fighter what she is going to do beforehand. Anyway kid, I'm sure your maybe a blackbelt in something but do street fighting consists of one or two punches then grabbing their shirts and being on the ground until someone comes in to save you.

@jthotty: Nice try. One shot one kill...hahahahahahaha. Nothing funnier than someone who swears they are Rambo after they did a week on the range. Ugh. You are not the only one who spent time in the military my neckbearded youngling. You are not one shot, one killing anything. If you were so fantastic then the tragedy that happened at Fort Hood not too long ago would have never happened. That's how easy it is to discredit someone.

Now, let's get back to brass tax. Street fighting does not happen anything like you say it does. Not in my 38 years on life, anyway. Not in the many people I've retired and those that have slapped me silly. You are describing your friends who don't know how to fight and probably walk around with a cammo hat on with a flag on it swearing they are tough until they meet someone like me. Now, as for me, i'm headed to the gym to go work a heavy bag. I'm old, and out of shape, but can still slap the beard off of an internet basement dweller on my worst day.

So, Rhonda. She beat Beth in record time with her fist and then she flipped a girl over on her back and pummeled her face until the ref stopped that one as well. So as we can see, you know nothing about fighting, nothing about Rousey yet you keep spouting off. It's incredible. I'm not mad at you, but I am pointing and laughing.

@Beasthunt: I cant grow a beard, genes man. Meh genes lol. Correct, I never encountered street fighting, only war fighting, where one can be seen and the other not seen. I don't work out and its been 7 years since I served, but you swear up and down just a couple of fights. I don't look at her whole 3min of fighting (lol) only her highlights which is 1 min, but yes I know nothing about hand to hand combat, which I admitted I did not. But doing the same thing, over and over will cause her to lose. One day, she wont be good, because everyone will study the same set of moves she does every time. Which is smart for her to move to movies, as people will idolize her to being fake (ironic, people idolize actors because they portray something that they are not.) I may not know as much about fighting mechanics, but I do understand patterns.

Eddie......the Madden curse is specifically resulting with the cover athlete suffering a season-ending injury......not just being knocked out in something where you're supposed to be knocked out. She will be back doing what shes doing.

@NbAlIvEr10000: Getting knocked out and losing your strap is such an embarrasing fashion is almost as bad as a season ending injury.

But she will be back, and she will be fierce. I just hope EA doesn't do a douche bag move and take her off the cover just because of one embarrassing loss.

that charecter model isnt that impressive.......and seriously no offence but when they usually put "women" into fighting things like ufc or wwf and all that its usually attractive women or what (though she does seem a bit more manly then most but still) more for the fact far more guys watch that then women id say. cuz i mean its really a guy thing to want to watch two people beat the crap out of each other.

She wasn't cursed by being on the cover of a videogame, come on. Her opponent was a professional boxer who knows who to strike and planned ahead on how to approach Rhonda just like how batman plans ahead before taking on his opponents.

@thecman25: Haha how so? Up until Saturday night, she dominated every one of her fights at will and chose how she wanted to finish the fight. I like holly more, but can't deny Rousey is crazy. Holm had such a flawless strategy and only someone with footwork like hers could pull it off.

@thecman25: Seriously, I was watching some promo where Joe Rogan was claiming that she wasn't just a once in a generation fighter; but the sort of fighter we've seen "only once in the history of mankind".

Then later that night she got her ass kicked. Harhar.

@Sw1tched:

Lol, nice on the replaying side, sounds like fun but on the other side of things, 1 loss doesn't equal to them stripping her of every other great offer she has going for her, most are just pissed at her because of how her attitude has changed (which i'd like to believe was a marketing strategy on her end to bring in more viewers) and the fact that she was being hyped so much by the media due to being undefeated because of being known to use her 1 trick move to bring her most victories! When you're the top dog, at some point it will bring on hate from others clamoring to watch and see you fall, it's just that when you have a more humble attitude throughout for the most part, most will look to you with much respect and a more positive attitude still!
