Namco Bandai is keeping Ridge Racer Unbounded in the garage for extra work. The publisher today announced that the new racing game will arrive "later in 2012" for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. It was previously expected to arrive on March 6.

Ridge Racer Unbounded is now bound to a new release date.
Ridge Racer Unbounded is now bound to a new release date.

Explaining the delay, Namco Bandai said the additional time will give the development team at Bugbear Entertainment more time "to pack the disc with features that will truly make the game sing." The publisher did not name any of these features.

Namco Bandai said it plans to make an announcement "shortly" that will detail the game's new release date, specify its preorder incentives, and provide a full list of features for the game.

Though Xbox 360, PS3, and PC gamers will need to wait extra time to play Ridge Racer Unbounded, a PlayStation Vita Ridge Racer game is due out on March 13.

Unbounded takes the circuit-racing franchise onto city streets with a new emphasis on havoc and destruction. Players will be able to choose how they race through cities, both in designing the city layouts and in opting to take shortcuts through storefronts when expedient.

Update: Namco Bandai has confirmed that only the North American release date has been delayed. Ridge Racer Unbounded will launch in Europe and Australia on March 29.

Is unbounded even a real word? Shouldn't it be unbound?

This game looks like it could be either very good or very bad. Gonna wait for the reviews.

Never much of a Ridge Racer fan (Daytona USA for the Saturn and Screamer for the pc killed it), but I have hope now that Bugbear is involved. I just hope this has a decent soundtrack, and not techno crap (like other Ridge Racer games) or euro garbage (Flatout 1).

It's nice to hear of a developer actually taking the time to make a game truly great, and worth the purchase price. The only thing I'd be worried about is whether all that content they're "packing in the disc" will be available to the player, or if they'll pull a Capcom, and require a fee to unlock.

"to pack the disc with features that will truly make the game sing.". Translation - "You can play 7 cars this time".

The demo has been panned everywhere, so that's no surprise. I'm still confident that Bugbear will finally make it and release the game the way it's meant to be

Ridge Racer 7 is one of the underated games of this generation. The game was pretty good.

Could this be a Burnout 3 type game? If so I would definitely look into this. But if it is trying to be a Burnout Paradise I'll pass. I prefer more structure in my driving games and a menu system that doesn't force me to drive around looking for stuff to do.
