Riccitiello on next-gen: the stakes are enormous

Former Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello says console gaming will "explode" with arrival of future platforms, but only if Sony and Microsoft can avoid pitfalls.

Former Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello believes the console gaming business has the potential to "explode" in popularity with the arrival of next-generation systems, but only if these platforms are able to avoid major potential pitfalls.

No Caption Provided

In a guest editorial at Kotaku, the executive laid out his thoughts on next-generation platforms on the eve of Microsoft's next-generation reveal event. First, he argued that Sony and Microsoft must blow gamers away with the features and services of their next-generation platforms.

"I believe that console gaming is going to explode on the scene of consumer electronics with this next generation of consoles. Sony and Microsoft absolutely need to deliver new boxes that really impress us," Riccitiello said. "They need to deliver platforms that enable game experiences that are not possible on current consoles. It is not just about graphics, although it is partly about graphics. It is also about recognizing that a lot has changed with online devices and the cloud since the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were originally introduced."

Riccitiello then highlighted four scenarios he said Microsoft and Sony must avoid if their respective next-generation platforms are to succeed.

"The first and most obvious of these pitfalls is if Sony or Microsoft forgets who brought them to the dance in the first place: gamers," Riccitiello said. "I certainly see the temptation to emphasize all sorts of experiences that these boxes might bring to the living room. These new machines can do a lot. The risk is that either or both of the new platforms emphasize these 'value-add' experiences too much, both in the user interface on the consoles themselves, or in the story they tell consumers when they unleash their avalanche of advertising. To paraphrase a political slogan, 'It's about the games, stupid.'"

He further explained that the idea of "reinventing the living room" may sound like a "big and sexy" proposition that will read well in mainstream media, but said that Microsoft and Sony should instead double down on games and on building game-focused user interfaces.

"The risk of complexity in the new console UI (user interface) is real," he said. "Give us too much on the screen, and we'll never find our games. The risk is that too many choices, and a UI design to appeal to too many audiences, means nothing stands out."

Another pitfall Riccitiello said he believes could bring down the PS4 and next Xbox is that of supply. He said that consumers today expect to be able to get what they want when they want it and if they can't, then sales could suffer.

"Past console launches have been severely hampered by a lack of supply. A new console launch with only a few million units available will simply frustrate all of us," Riccitiello said. "Limited supply means the new consoles will launch with a whimper and whine, not the cry of attack. If Sony and Microsoft want to see the next generation of consoles take high ground in the consumer electronics war this year, they are going to have to invest to make sure there are enough of the new consoles out there."

Riccitiello's third potential pitfall is that of price. He claimed getting the price right will be "very important" to the prosperity of the PS4 and next Xbox.

"The stakes are enormous," he said.

The fourth and final potential problem for the PS4 and next Xbox, according to Riccitiello, has to do with what he described as third-rail topics, such as always-online requirements and DRM schemes.

"The question of the always-on connection is one that causes some gamers' blood to boil," he said. "Gamers will want, and learn to love, the good parts of consoles being more connected to our digital lives than was possible with the machines launched eight years ago."

"At launch, Sony and Microsoft must avoid putting up new and alarming DRM schemes, and focus on enabling the cool new game experiences that seamlessly connected consoles allow," he added.

Riccitiello quit EA in March. The Battlefield and FIFA publisher is currently reviewing internal and external candidates for his replacement, though a successor has not yet been named.

What? This is like the first time I ever see an EA rep saying something that is not insanely stupid or offensive.

Better get out your notebooks MS and Sony, because 'Ricci' is definitely the model for good business and quality game development.

Even if it's just talk, I have to agree with some of the points he mentioned. In particular:

"The first and most obvious of these pitfalls is if Sony or Microsoft forgets who brought them to the dance in the first place: Gamers,"

It's easy to dismiss it as obvious, but the push to make game consoles the center of the house's multimedia center suggests that console developers think otherwise. Netflix, Redbox, Facebook, Skype...none of that stuff would have even been consider if nobody bought their boxes in the first place. Gamers made games profitable first. Not soccer moms looking to exercise, not casual consumers looking for the next electronic fad...GAMERS. Those of us that were there around the time of the first crash until games became 'cool' in the mid to late 90s.

Of course, this is all just opinion. Now that games are available on nearly every electronic medium imaginable, they need to expand beyond just the core gamers to really strike it rich. Just...don't forget about us when you're reaching out to non-gamers.

As a side note...why is the term "gamers" underlined in red on a gaming site?

I couldn't agree with him more. The major key is New game experiences that simply couldn't be done on the previous generation. (Not Just better graphics) Super excited.

Let's list those "potential pitfalls";

Day 1 DLC

Season passes

Blocking used games

Always online

Forgetting people buy a games console to play games

Ramming ads down people's throats

Pre ordering systems with no consumer benefit

Microtransactions for full price games

Paying to play online

Camera systems that are always looking at the console owner

User interface that has gaming taking up 15% of screen space leaving 85% for ads

Check your math skills, as you are WAY off. To be correct, Microsoft came up with exactly NONE of those "pitfalls"/exaggerations. They use a few, but pioneered none of them (ie SEGA was the first to charge for online play at the end of the Dreamcast cycle, SONY was the first to patent a method to block used games, etc).

For one, I am not rich but I do make a pretty comfortable living. I am hardly young, probably old enough to be your father to be quite honest - have been around since the beginning of video games. And your last insult doesn't warrant a response.

What IS wrong with a Season Pass? Are you opposed to saving money? It changes nothing, you can still wait for all the content to be released before purchasing if you have doubts about the content or still buy it individually (or not at all). Hating on a Season Pass just shows you have a lower than normal intelligence and looking for something to hate to make yourself look hip.

Same thing with Day 1 DLC, nothing wrong with it if done right. I am not talking about Capcom type strategy, but something actually additional to the game or a worthy pre-order bonus that does not detract from the main game. I am not saying a lot

Talk about drinking the Kool-Aid - you drank a whole pitcher of the blind hate conspiracy flavor. While many companies can and do abuse some of these practices, only a fool will make a blanket statement that they are all bad and abusing their customer.

@6orange6 @dlCHIEF58 @Fo_Fai

The math skills comment wasn't directed at you, it was at the fool who tried to claim that 80% of the things you listed Microsoft came up with, when in fact they came up with about NONE of those items - not even paying to access online services was initially their idea.

But since you went there, you are way off base about the ad space as well. A lot of what you are referring to as ads are no such thing or at least are debatable. And how are "Season Passes" a bad thing? It is just a bulk discount on DLC offerings - so you hate saving money? And there is nothing inherently wrong with Day 1 DLC either. There are a few instances where it is an obvious cash grab, but not every time.

And there is a benefit to pre-ordering - you are guaranteed a unit at launch. If you don't have a pre-order, then there is no guarantee you will get a new console at retail price during launch.

1; do try and learn to differentiate between mathematics and corporate predictions

2; even on your terms which are wrong, you are wrong...

Pretty strange. A bunch of small close up pics that don't show much. Then a small blurry image of what looks like the unit is up on its side.

What was up with those arrow thingys?

But did anyone expect Sony not to try to steal some of MS's thunder?

Humor me here John. What are the good parts? All I think about when I see "more connected" coming from you is EA's SimCity fiasco.

Exactly it's like some people don't understand that people love online stuff. Online co-op. Online competitive multiplayer. Being able to download patches to fix stuff, mods, etc, etc.

What they don't like is for everything to break if the connection isn't there. That the unit can't do what it normally should be able to do when it's not connected.

In other words, they want their connection used when it's needed to be used. They want their console to work when it should.

@DarkSaber2k Did you read the entire article on Kotaku? Don't just take the short little tidbits GameSpot gives you as the entire story, as opposed to actually reading it for yourself and forming your own opinion about what is being said. I personally found it to be a pretty decent read.

I read it on kotaku. It is so clearly visible that this dude has worked with pr person on this article. Also not surprised that he wasn't running the company that well if instead of keeping his mind focused he was constantly playing casual games on his phone. It just doesn't work this way. Any person needs around 30 minutes o get in to the very focused state of mind.

@megatronx2 Just a couple notes. It was an article on a magazine/website, so unless you don't understand how things work, those things are always going to go through an editor, and are always going to be "spruced up" so to speak. I too, read the article. I thought it was a solid piece, and an interesting read. The reason so many people are obliviously stating the obvious like, "Oh, he's just saying if they don't lose, they win," is because people are taking the cliff notes that GameSpot provided as opposed to reading the article itself and forming their own opinion from the piece. And may I also note, not everything he did while at EA was bad . . .

And he is also responsible for such IPs as Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, and Dragon Age being made and published, as well as putting more focus on quality in EA titles. He did a lot early in his tenure as CEO which had started to turn the company's image around, but then he succumbed to the corporate pressure.

Before I even consider the PS4, I want to see that there is no BS that comes with it. I'm not even considering the NextBox anymore.

@TheGamerPhenom @adroge1 I'm basing this upon the patents MS has already filed, the expectations that the Kinect is required, as well as a monthly fee for any online multi-player like they have with the 360 right now (I own a 360 but will never pay for online on that console).

I agree with most of what he's saying here, except when it comes to this sentence:

"Gamers will want, and learn to love, the good parts of consoles being more connected to our digital lives than was possible with the machines launched eight years ago."

No, I won't learn to love it. I don't play online on consoles. If any particular game has to be 'connected' to get the best out of it, then I simply don't want it, especially for SINGLE PLAYER games. :/ I'm getting sick of all this 'connected' crap.

@Gallowhand Even if you don't want to play online ever, without that connectivity you can't get the updates for both the console itself and the patches that so many games inevitably need now because how prevalent the mentality of 'we can fix it after launch' has become. So you end up playing the broken versions of your single player games.

@Carpetfluff I don't mind patching games (or getting firmware updates) online, but that's a bit different than having to be 'connected' to play a game.

I used to play a lot of multiplayer on PC back in the day, but I just got tired of all the griefers coming in and ruining the experience for everyone. For years I've preferred the single player experience, or sometimes playing through a campaign in co-op with my son. Beyond that, I'm not interested in these 'connected experiences' that seem to have become the current buzz words in the industry.

@Gallowhand I enjoy the connectivity of games. But I enjoy a strong single player experience just as much, if not probably more. It was the one thing I didn't like about his stance. I'm not going to be a fan of "constant connectivity," and if they try and push it too much, they will find out all too quickly it isn't going to fly.
