Rian Johnson's Star Wars Trilogy Is Still Happening - Report

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson's new trilogy of Star Wars films is still happening, but that's basically all we know. Author Sariah Wilson recently interviewed the Oscar-nominated director, and Wilson reports that Johnson confirmed that his trilogy is still coming.

"No dates or timelines because he has other projects going on, but it is happening," Wilson wrote. "That is all I know about it."

Back when we first heard about Johnson's new trilogy in 2017, it was announced that his new films would be separate from the saga that concluded with The Rise of Skywalker. His three new films will introduce new characters from a part of the galaxy that previous Star Wars films have yet to explore. Johnson is developing the films with his longtime producer Ram Bergman.

It was announced at the time that Johnson would write and direct the first of the three films, but potentially not the next two, though he would be involved in their production.

After The Rise of Skywalker, Disney announced that the series was going on a mini hiatus of sorts as Lucasfilm plotted out the future of the sci-fi series on the big screen. The company also partnered with Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss on their own trilogy of Star Wars films, but their projects came to an end when they signed a rich deal with Netflix.

In addition to the new trilogy from Johnson, Lucasfilm has partnered with Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins for a new film described as a "boundary pushing high speed thrill ride."

As for Johnson's other projects that are taking up his time, the director has plans for a Knives Out sequel.
