Now Playing: Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Trailer Revealed - GS Universe News Update

The huge Star Wars fan event, Star Wars Celebration, is officially underway in Chicago. It started out with a high-profile panel focused on the next big movie: Star Wars: Episode 9, and this brought with it the reveal of Episode 9's title: The Rise of Skywalker. Additionally, we got the first Episode 9 trailer, which was capped off with a surprise when we heard the laughter of Emperor Palpatine. If there were any debate about whose voice it was, actor Ian McDiarmid briefly appeared on stage after the trailer first rolled, further reinforcing that the iconic villain will apparently return in some capacity. There were lots of other tidbits to be gleaned as well, such as the fact that Kylo Ren might be getting his helmet back. We'll report back with more details as we continue to dig in.

Lucasfilm has now published today's panel if you're interested in rewatching--at the very least, it's worth checking out the portion with C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels, who seems to be having just the best time. Further below, you can find the official Star Wars livestream below, which is ongoing for the first day of Celebration. While Episode 9's panel was undoubtedly the highlight of today--and arguably the entire weekend--there's still much more to come. You can check out ore of our coverage through the links below.

The original story follows.

The panel began with Stephen Colbert as host bringing out director JJ Abrams and Star Wars boss Kathleen Kennedy to talk about the film and the excitement around it. Beyond that, the panel promises new details about the highly anticipated third movie in the new trilogy. It's widely assumed that the first Episode 9 trailer will make its debut and that we'll get the official title.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and director JJ Abrams are already on stage, while the panel's official description also teases there will be "plenty of surprises and special guests." According to Lucasfilm, this is an event "you will definitely not want to miss." As of this writing, we haven't gotten many meaningful details yet, with Kennedy and Abrams talking broadly about how they reached this point and what Episode IX means to them and to Star Wars. Abrams did, however, reveal, the movie is about the core group going on an adventure together. He also noted that some time has passed since the end of the last movie. The cast has now assembled on stage, including a newcomer, although Adam Driver is conspicuously absent.

The entire panel is being live streamed. You can watch it through the Star Wars YouTube channel or in the video embed below. It's scheduled to run for an hour total, so the title and trailer--if they are coming--should be debuting soon.

Star Wars Episode 9 Panel Start Time

  • 9 AM PT
  • 11 AM CT
  • 12 PM ET
  • 5 PM BST
  • 4 AM AEDT (Saturday, April 13)

Despite Episode 9 releasing on December 20, 2019, we know very little about it. As noted above, it doesn't have a title yet, so that could be among the reveals for the panel. There also hasn't been a trailer or any footage released, so Star Wars Celebration seems as likely a place as any to release one based on what the event typically brings. Abrams, who previously directed 2015's The Force Awakens, was brought on after Jurassic World's Colin Trevorrow was let go from the role.

The third and final entry in the new trilogy that began with The Force Awakens, Episode IX wraps up the entire Skywalker Saga that began all the way back in 1977.

Star Wars Celebration also promises news and reveals for the new Star Wars game Jedi Fallen Order from the developers of Apex Legends and Titanfall. Go to GameSpot sister site CNET to see a full rundown of what to expect from the show.

As a former HUGE Star Wars fan, I literally don't give a shit about the main series anymore. TFA was an overhyped disappointment, and TLJ was a supreme f*** y** to fans both new and old to the franchise.

The prequels by George might had been cringey and objectively bad Star Wars movies, but they were at least entertaining and had creative, original elements. This new rubbish of a trilogy is pure copy-paste of major plot line from the original trilogy with characterization that betrays decades of established narrative, and shoe-horned-in horribly written new characters that only serve to cater to the millennial socio-political standards in entertainment.

I will never understand how did an atrocity that is TLJ was ever made in a series as once beloved and iconic as Star Wars.

@Bread_or_Decide: I've already been duped twice into wasting money on buying tickets for Force Awakanes and TLJ, there's no way in hell I'm spending another $15 on a movie ticket for this absolute dumpster fire of a trilogy. I'm streaming it illegally online because that's exactly what Disney deserves.

Even the original cast know the new Star Wars movies suck. That's why the only character they don't kill off is animated.

keep rehasing those original stores to be repackaged as something new!? I wont deny that these moves have "star wars" feel to them but seriously why take the original stories and repackages them?

@tsunami2311: Why? Because corporations are psychopathic money chasing machines. The more they get the more they want They're like Terminators or Borg. Story and artistic concerns are irrelevant to them.

The movie that will create the fanatical galaxy of a million clickbait youtube videos telling us how Disney ruined starwars (again!)

@uninspiredcup: Yeah it's like an industry at this point. First the media and youtubers get rich off the hype of analyzing every hair in each trailer, then they make money tearing it all apart once it comes out. I'm not even gonna bother watching this one. I don't care any more.

This trilogy is quite difficult to save in just one single film, I think the final episode should focus more on paving the way for the next trilogy instead...

Nobody cares. STAR WARS sucks now. George Lucas should have never sold it to Disney.

@dzimm: Did I miss something? Lucas ruined star wars with the prequels. Disney saved it with TFA.

Avatar image for dzimm

@Bread_or_Decide: The best thing that can be said about THE FARCE AWAKENS is that it made people sit back and say, "You now what? The prequels really weren't so bad, were they?"

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide
Bread_or_Decide

@dzimm: Except everyone loved FTA. Before nerds learned a literary term and then thought it was a blanket statement to hate on an entire film. Can't rewrite history, TFA is a smash hit, loved by star wars fans. Ten haters can't change that.

Avatar image for dzimm

@Bread_or_Decide: Right... everyone loved it ... except for everyone who didn't.

@dzimm: Are you really going to make me embarass you with facts?

Rotten tomatoes audience score: 87% fresh with 230,501 votes.

Cinemascore: A

IMDB score: 8/10 with 777,577 votes from users.

Metacritic score 6.8/10 with 4,689 positive reviews, 1,000 mixed, and 1,000 negative.

The problem with youtube and internet geeks they get into this echo chamber and somehow think they are the majority view on something.

Clearly people loved it and liked it, just because the contrarians learned the term mary sue and took to reddit doesn't mean they are the majority view on the film.

Unless you don't think user reviews count for some reason. Critics also adored TFA just to add a cherry on top.

So I guess none of that counts? You and ten others scream mary sue and all of a sudden a successful relaunch of star wars is somehow a failure.

Geesh, do i even need to bring up the two billion dollar box office for a movie everyone apparently hated? You people really are loony tunes, living in a world of your own. Get offline, trust me, it helps.

Avatar image for dzimm

@Bread_or_Decide: I don't deny that a lot of people liked it. But it's also true that a lot of people didn't like it (if we average your numbers, about 30% of the audience disliked it), and there are a lot of people who liked it initially, but their opinion has changed over time. A number of people I personally know are among the latter.

@dzimm: Hearsay and conjecture. Anecdotal evidence is hardly proof of anything.

@Bread_or_Decide: Hearsay and conjecture? What the hell are are you talking about? According to the numbers that YOU provided, around 30% of people who paid to watch THE FARCE AWAKENS left the theater dissatisfied.

Oh, and did you hear the latest? JJ Abrams asked George Lucas for advice on how to clean up the mess that he and Rian Johnson made of the sequel trilogy.

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/j-j-abrams-consulted-george-lucas-writing-star-wars-rise-skywalker-185700904.html

It's a shame he didn't seek out the master's counsel earlier. Maybe if Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy hadn't arrogantly tossed out Lucas' treatment for Episodes 7, 8, and 9 then we wouldn't be in this situation.

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

@dzimm: JJ never called TLJ a mess. You see, that's more fanboy dribble. Consulting George is something JJ has always done, since he directed TFA. Stop putting words into their mouth.

@Bread_or_Decide: "JJ never called TLJ a mess."

Search your feelings. You know it to be true!

The fact that he's not accepting THE LAST JEDI as canon and will be heavily retconning the narrative for the next film says it all.

@dzimm: They're not competitors, they're colleagues. JJ even said he was jealous that he didn't direct the script Rian wrote.

@chubby170: You need to rewatch those horrid films and reassess what you think a bad film is.

Bad writing, bad acting, good grief those prequels are just horrid.

Avatar image for chubby170

@Bread_or_Decide: I have. I really dislike the new movies. What you listed about the new movies is exactly how I feel about the prequels.

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

@chubby170: There's no line reading as bad as "i hate sand" thus making the new movies vastly superior to the prequels.

Avatar image for chubby170

@Bread_or_Decide: The black guy in the first newer movie was probably the worst actor ever to take a role in any star wars movie, ever. lol.

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

@chubby170: John Boyega is his name.

He’s better than jar jar binks and both anakin actors. Hands down.

Avatar image for Rufus_the_rat

@Bread_or_Decide: Sorry, but the prequel line about sand is Shakespeare quality compared to Rose's "That’s how we are going to win. Not fighting what we hate, but saving what we love!"

These sequels are full of cringe worthy vapid dialogue like that. And their plots are equally horrid. Especially Force Awakens, which was such a bad set up the following movies couldn't help but suck badly.
