Review: Game Of Thrones Episode 4, Season 8 -- Self-Sabotage At Its Finest

Game of Thrones Season 8 spoilers ahead!

Only two episodes of Game of Thrones remain before Season 8--and HBO's hit show--come to an end. With this season consisting of fewer episodes than usual (just six, although most of these are longer than average) and so many storylines to wrap up, it's been a controversial one. Episode 3 was maligned by many; below, you'll find our take on this past Sunday's Episode 4, which dealt with the fallout from The Battle of Winterfell.

If you're caught up, you might be interested in the Episode 5 preview trailer or the just-released Episode 5 photos HBO shared online. It doesn't give a ton away, but we know another battle is coming, this time for control of the Iron Throne and Westeros. The long-awaited Cleganebowl with the Hound and the Mountain also looks like. Be sure to check out all the Easter Eggs hidden in this episode, why Missandei says "dracarys" and our rundown on the discussion around the possibility of more dragons being in Westeros. Finally, if you're looking for the easiest way to watch the last two episodes of Game of Thrones, our sister site CNET has you covered.

Now Playing: Game Of Thrones Episode 4 Recap Breakdown: The Last Of The Starks (Season 8)

Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 4, titled "The Last of the Starks," in a way had it easy: It couldn't have possibly been worse than the nonsensical Episode 3, "The Long Night," which many fans feel betrayed the very core of what Game of Thrones is. With the bar set so low, Episode 4 was always going to seem better in comparison. And sure enough, it wasn't the worst episode so far in Season 8.

But there's just something off about the way Game of Thrones' final conflict--the one between Cersei, Dany, and Jon/Aegon--is taking shape. Jon's explanation that he has no desire to make a claim to the Iron Throne (which apparently took place offscreen at some point) isn't good enough for the Dragon Queen, and what do you know? This episode proved Dany's worst fears right: Now that Jon's secret is out, there's already talk of how much better he'd be at ruling.

But why? Is that conversation justified? Jon has proved time and time again that he has what it takes, but so has Daenerys. They're in the endgame, and now is no time to be sowing inner conflict on your own side. Characters like Sansa and Varys should be smarter than this (although they weren't smart enough to remember that crypts are full of corpses, so who knows?).

The easiest resolution to this whole conflict would be for Jon and Dany to get married, announce his identity to the whole Seven Kingdoms, and be stronger than ever, together, a united front of Targaryens here to take their rightful seat back. Obviously, it's Game of Thrones, so it can't be that easy, but the show hasn't presented an adequate reason why not. Because Sansa and Arya still don't trust the queen who sacrificed half her forces to defend their home? Because Varys worries that Dany would wear the pants in the relationship? All this scheming and plotting and self-sabotaging feels contrived, because in this case, there's one clear path that makes the most sense, and no one's managed to come up with any adequate justification for why they can't just do this one thing the easy way.

The blame for that falls squarely on this episode's writers, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who also wrote the previous episode (and the next two, which isn't a great sign for the rest of the final season). It's clear what they're trying to do, and it's clear that they failed at it--because I just can't figure out why Jon and Dany wouldn't just make the smart choice, unite the North and South, and usher in a new age of Targaryen rule.

Elsewhere in Winterfell, "The Last of the Starks" was full of fan service--although much of it was misplaced. Ghost showed up for the third time this season, only to immediately be written off the show, without so much as a pat from Jon. The suits at HBO breathed a sigh of relief for the show's CG budget, while fans cried out at the injustice of Ghost being treated like he's just as unimportant as Daario F***ing Naharis. Ghost's casual dismissal was almost as bad as the episode cutting away from Jon telling his sisters his true identity--a conversation fans have been awaiting for decades. Considering how much fan service this season has featured, it's frankly shocking that we didn't get to see the rest of that chat.

Jaime and Brienne got together--but only, it turns out, to make it more of a gut punch to her when he went riding back to Cersei anyway. Jaime knighted Brienne in Episode 2, and it was a beautiful culmination of both characters' arcs, fulfilling their relationship without needing to shoehorn in a romance. This final twist of the knife was, arguably, unnecessary. The fact that Jaime is most likely riding south to kill his sister himself is the plotline's saving grace--and leaving his intentions ambiguous does a decent job of keeping that tension going.

And another dragon died. Once again, Game of Thrones put cinematic showiness over plausibility, as it's hard to believe that Dany somehow failed to glimpse Euron's fleet hiding behind a rock from her vantage point hundreds of feet in the air. The camera was pointed up toward the sky when the fleet apparently came into view of the dragons, which leaves it just vague enough to be somewhat believable. But even if you buy that, it's insane that no one saw that attack coming in a figurative sense; they know about Euron's fleet, they know about Cersei's scorpions (Drogon caught a bolt back in Season 7's "The Spoils of War"), and they know that King's Landing and Dragonstone are a stone's throw from one another. Why wouldn't Euron be waiting to ambush them?

Losing yet another dragon is a massive blow to Dany, and it hurts even more because it could have easily been avoided. Maybe that's another case of the writing being bad, or maybe all the greatest minds in Westeros really are just that dumb. Who can say at this point?

With two episodes of Game of Thrones left, it feels safe to say that the show probably doesn't have many big surprises left. Some fans are disappointed the White Walkers were easily defeated in a single skirmish, while others may still hope that Jon and Dany will make peace with each other and figure out that a united Targaryen front is the strongest, easiest, and smartest way forward. Whatever you think, there's no denying that this season has been surprising so far, and despite all our gripes, there's something deeply enjoyable about that.

I believe that with the end in sight, what we're seeing is what we're getting: Jon and Dany and Cersei will vie for the Iron Throne, and whichever of them is left standing at the end will get it. It's going to be exciting, there will be plenty of fire and blood, and at this point nobody can predict what will happen next. I have plenty of complaints with the path we've taken to get here, but when it comes down to it, I'm looking forward to seeing how this all ends. Once it does, maybe George R.R. Martin can finally write the rest of the books and finish things his way. Until then, let's just try to enjoy this for what it is.

"The easiest resolution to this whole conflict would be for Jon and Dany to get married, announce his identity to the whole Seven Kingdoms, and be stronger than ever, together, a united front of Targaryens here to take their rightful seat back."

Close.... But that wouldn't make any sense, as you admitted yourself. Because it's Game of Thrones, as you know, there is no reason Jon and Dany can't struggle for the throne. So the writers, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, are bringing this story in the right direction.

I do, however, like your phrase "no one's managed to come up with any adequate justification for why..." but I, myself, would continue with...

"no one's managed to come up with any adequate justification for why JON DOES NOT WANT THE THRONE?"

MY GOD! Why in the world is he fighting the throne? The writers have not established this. So the contrived nature of Game of Thrones Season 8 is ALL based on the fact that Jon should accept that he is the true King. And if not, then there has to be a better reason than he weeping and sullying over Dany not loving him back... who, afterall, has no claim to the throne in the first place.

I saw the previous post, and due to my appreciation of both this show and the medium it conquered, felt compelled to post for the first time here. It should be known, that Benioff and Weiss, the shows creators, are (likely) completely to blame for this shows demise to mediocrity, not HBO.

It is my understanding, well before a decision to have spin offs, that HBO was willing to throw $ at them to continue the series past where they were aiming to end it (not meaning story, but eps counts and seasons). There is nothing else, imo, to explain why they refused to actually spend, easily another full season or two, to develop the plot and character arcs needed, other than they have been mentally checked out of it for awhile. They also have their own original show they want to develop (google it...I don't know how they will pull off that PC nightmare).

I like to see all sides, and I can understand many arguments for them wanting out (family, other projects, etc) but they could have handed the reins to others. Maybe HBO trusted them...I still did until now. Bottom line, imo, this show was too great of an achievement to excuse what happened here, and is truly ashame. If the info I am presenting is fundamentally sound, I think people need to be aware of why this happened...and that it could have been avoided. I fully admit a lot of this is opinion and speculative, while others don't see the massive quality drops or disagree with my opinion, many do relate to how I feel about it.

I was a pre-hype book fan and praised the show through S06. Around there, as overtly discussed over the nets, I am of agreement the show's quality went down due to the creators wishes to speed up arcs and bring this thing to an end. Until this season, most of the lazy writing and plot holes were forgivable to me. This season...this eps especially, is truly disappointing and the epitome of what I was trying to overlook previously while trusting the creators to end this with the respect it deserves. How hard could that be, after almost 6 seasons of some of the best television written and the ground work laid? Right? Sigh.

I fear what's about to come, not cause of who will die, but because this eps was of such low quality, they lost my trust. Luckily there is just the two left to cringe at, and don't get me wrong, still HOPE that I am wrong, and there is somehow going to be massive plot developments that make all of this season's plot and character choices mean more than the creators truly f'd us all over per my earlier statements.

Unfortunately, if I was putting vegas odds on either, my $ would be on the strongest show we have ever seen (when covering all artistic aspects across the board and budget), is about to fizzle out like it was canceled 2 seasons early and a TWD writer had to come in and write the end in 3 eps based on someone else's leftover bullet points.

Unfortunately, the series is being killed off by a thousand cuts. Reducing the number of episodes for season 8 to just 6 is a telltale sign that HBO just wants to wrap this thing up asap. To me, the whitewalkers were such a crucial part of the show. Obliterating them in the third episode, so easily, seemed ridiculous. Sure, the fans will say, GoT is about the characters, the living characters, well, no it's not. Because with the whitewalkers gone, there isn't much there in the remainder of the character's story line to sustain the level of theatrical intensity that we are so use to in the past. What we have is a rehash of the political intrigue we saw in seasons one and two.

So much was painfully contrived in this episode that it made me stop caring about the series. All I want to know now is how it ends so I'll know what GRRM had in mind (at least when first discussed with the show runners), because I'm not certain he's ever finishing the books.

The show is almost a parody of its own worst moments from the last four years. I might even skip next episode, get the highlights from Reddit and Twitter, then just watch the finale. I do have something I could be doing Sunday at 9PM, anyway.

If Dany wants to issue her dreaded "dracarys" command, she better hurry. She's running out of dragons. This episode could have been called "The Face of Rage."

Season 8 could go down as a big disappointment in my opinion. Episodes 3 and 4 were questionable in many ways. The military tactics being displayed by the forces from the north (or lack thereof) make no sense at all. Everyone standing in front of the gates of Kings Landing in clear range of all the archers and the scorpion weapons mounted on the wall (with the dragon just sitting in the background) is just plain dumb. I guess it makes for good drama though. The writing has gotten sloppy and unimaginative, as if the producers are just trying to get the show completed so they can move on to other things. A sad way to finish off a wonderful series.

Both Jon and Dany are rash and reckless, neither of them seems well suited for the throne.

The reason Jon and Dani aren't getting married is because she is his Aunt. Insisting that this is the best solution without mentioning their complicated relationship removes the steam from this review. She would no longer have claim to the iron throne. The show is doing a good job of framing this problem - everyone thinks Jon is the hero for riding her dragon, and nobody is acknowledging her contribution - supported very clearly in the scene with the Starbuck's cup. To me all of her subsequent actions make sense. Sure they aren't completely justified: she COULD capitulate, let him take the throne and remain a powerful family contributor. But that's not happening because why the hell should she, plus she has a bit of the T crazy.

It's not so much that the trajectory is disappointing or that they're doing things wrong at all. It's just that after the epic quality of episode 3 it just isn't very interesting. I'm not ready to watch them do their sh**t to each other and we are back to that. Episodes 2 and 3 were great farewells to all the characters, and that is kind of enough.

@lexperdide: she spent 7 seasons working towards the throne, after all she has been through she'd never play second fiddle to jon

the only options left are to rule alone or death

option 3 of her realising she was going mad with power lust and giving it up for love died with jorah

I just wanna SCREAM to this writer. It's because Danny time and time again showing the traits of a 'mad queen'. Power-hungry bitch! Urrrrghhhhh.. GOD!!!

Sad to see one of the dragon died, but it happens just to move the plot forward. Same reason Rob Stark stupidly butchered several seasons before

Seriously? The reason they are beginning to think that Jon would be better is because Daenerys has several times also showed she is highly capable of being the "mad queen." Both have proven to be capable leaders. Only one has proven to also be mentally stable.

I've read fan theories that had better ending plot than this... whatever this is. It looks like fan fiction, but if that fan was either a pre-teen or bored elderly housewife. The fact that this season continues to disappoint with each episode is an achievement in itself. They had 2 years to prepare a sensible script and get the show back on the right track, but instead they continued to plunge even harder.

Don't think the show suffers for the past couple of seasons only because of the lack of books. This also seems to happen whenever the creator achieves early success. Over time, he gets surrounded by yes-men and starts to think his shit don't stink. Happened with Peter Jackson and George Lucas. Say what you will about D&D now, but they knew what their limits where in the early seasons. Now they think they are be-all end-all.

It’s odd that Television seems to give some people the idea that the story is written for them. Where the books are just the story and you either like it or don’t. You seem to think that because this show has not ended yet, that you have some kind of say in its rightful direction.

How sad.

@mattsaroni24:

No one has once complained about the books. The plotlines are very well written and engaging. The gripes come from the fact that since the end of Season 5, they left the books behind(that's as far as they have come) and ever since, there's been a distinct dumbing down in plotlines and far less in the theme of what was GoT. Yes, fans might feel they would have some say when the showrunners did a worse job than some might have expected, I for one would have had no problems taking a break from GoT until the books were finished. Though that's not how showbiz works.

This is getting somewhat predictable and banal, Michael.

Believability; how; why; nonsense! Yadda yadda yadda...

I love to actually say it: it's nice to see the butthurt here. I lounge with a wine and consume both the show and my glass of red with nothing but satisfaction. Whilst others 'need' to watch it, but hate it at the same time. I prefer my position--lucky to be alive and well to spectate production like this.

Roll on episode 5!

Far from it... I am always on "Game"spot, not Fanboyspot--but it's evident in some small corners of the site. Demean -- I'd never, haha! Nah I would. Seldom is an opinion worth anything for the most part, and usually they're ripe for ridicule. This "review" which is the key word that brought me here, is hardly one at all. An opinion well that's not quite the same. A review can be an opinion, but an opinion isn't a review. So just having an opinion and dressing it up as a review doesn't make you immune to criticism (nor would it any other way). You criticise mine all you want, but you don't need my permission, and neither do I need yours.

Besides what is with this need to justify your place on sections of the internet? Oh that's right it must be opinion: the one you must champion for everyone. Should have a moderator specifically for this, I elect you, mate. +1 Good start!

You're right, there probably is someone more virtuous and morally superior than myself... your point?

@Devils-DIVISION: Someone who can write as well as you should be able to see my point quite clearly. Surely you "get it".

You like seeing those of us who have invested eight years in the show "butt hurt" because we believe the show has gone Hollywood and betrayed its' core? Really?

Hey mate, I'm a cab guy! Married. Family. Career. GOT is literally the only television program I watch. I prefer listening to music in my non-existing spare time. But I thought the show was brilliant until this season. Now, I literally think its' gone to crap. I can see how shows like Days of our Lives carry on for years.....

If you love the show, I'm not gonna log on a fan site and demean you for enjoying your choice of art. Art. What should I hang on my wall? Some people go to TJ MAXX, purchase dogs playing poker and they're totally thrilled. Are you laughing at them too?

Have an opinion all day long buddy. It's all subjective. No need for a moderator here my friend. But you laughing at me for my choices says a crap ton more about you than anything else.

The giant arrows zipping in from directly where the dragon was looking was real dumb. They should have just had a giant shepherd's crook come in and yank him off screen with a funny musical sting.

@Mogan: You got it. One of my fan theories is that there will be a Monty Python ending, where they are whacking each other with swords in the great hall of King's Landing. Suddenly there are sirens and scuffling feet and floodlights, and modern day police/Bobbies descend on them and shove them all into a police van which drives away to the muffled sounds of a police radio, as various scruffy detectives walk around looking at bits of evidence and throwing tarps over any stiffs that might be laying around.

Ever since the books were not the source material anymore it went down fast.

The quality of the characters went down and the story in general felt more and more like "lets finish this fast cause we are running out of ideas"

There is something else that is worrying me: the plot is going just too fast sometimes. The episode started slow with the funerals, but after an hour Euron destroyed their fleet in minutes, and then Daenerys marched in one second to King's Landing. Geography, again like in season 7, means nothing.

Also there is a serious lack of military logic, i know it's a series, i don't care if a ballista can easily kill a dragon and destroy ships (that's stupid, but who cares). But damn, i can't stop repeating "siege, SIEGE, S I E G E !!!!", a central part of medieval warfare. The night king could have forced their enemies to starvation or retreat at Winterfell if he maintained a siege. And Daenerys could do the same in King's Landing.

@JimmyCos: agree with everything but the night king is pretty stupid and so are his followers. they basically just rush you and that is it. he is just a magical machine made to kill all humans. this should have been explained in a better way as to why he has no strategy. In the books at least the "others" are sort of like fantasy fae looking with glass armor and actually smart. remember the show dumbs down a lot of things

The whole night king fight was just to much facepalms and wtf's for a serie that pushed itself like it did up till season 6 i believe.

They want to conquer back the iron throne, but the reason why they don't get along is because the dragon queen is getting so pissed off she wants to conquer the iron throne at all costs.

I frankly don't know what you're complaining about, this last season just like pretty much any other season delivers, I know i'm sad too we going to lose the best tv show ever created, but giving out bad reviews isn't going to help anyone.

But if you compare the series pre to post reference material, I think it is apparent that after loosing that, the series went downhill.

And what I hate most is that the way the main characters keep getting dumber.
Where is the strategy?
Where is the common sense?

even Dany should know by know that how she acts isn't a good long term strategy.

She saw how John was adored by the people of the north and that is something she has never had.

All in all the quality of the series went down and that is a real pitty as I really loved the way the character development and passing of the story was so fantastic up till season 6

How is this a review? Isn't the driving force behind a plot the decisions that characters make? so if they all make super intelligent decisions, you pretty much have no story.
I GET complaining that some boneheaded decisions are far away from the character growth we've witnessed. but ... is it? Isn't Jaime still a little selfish? Isn't Jon still more looking for acceptance from his family than any kind of leadership role? Isn't Daenrys a little unhinged?

Besides, we haven't actually seen some of these choices play out - it's that tension that keeps us watching. Will Jaimie join - or kill - Cersei in the end?

But I digress, my original question was... how is this a review??

I don't understand what the author's problem is with this season. I think he is unconsciously down about it ending, so anything other than perfection is going to be met with disappointment. Nothing is perfect. Not even the best episode of the best TV show of all time (you decide what that is).

The Long Night had problems, but every episode had problems. In my opinion, the battle in the long night was the very best Game of Thrones battle of the entire series.

Jon and Dany getting married would solve that conflict, and the dragon queen if alludes to it, but Jon knows that incest is wrong, so therefore he rejects the idea. The fact that the author feels the need to bring it up like it was his idea makes it appear as though he doesn't understand what is happening or it apparently can't remember.

Jamie leaving Brienne to go to Cersie was absolutely necessary. Image how you would have like that plot point to go. It couldn't have happened any other way. Jamie MUST return to Cersie. The final conflict would seem out of place without him there.

Sure, Dany know the Iron fleet would be there, but she didn't know the ballistae where upgraded. She thought they would be ineffective, just like last time with the loot train raid. The show even points it out.

This article is another example in a trend the journalist appear to be taking. Write a controversial article to get clicks. We'll it worked.

@gaiden81: I'm not a journalist and I still share a lot of these views. I don't think it's about getting clicks as much as being genuinely disappointed in how the show has been developed after getting past the events described in the books, and it has been that way for seasons now. The problem is the same as that of the Tolkien works in film. Lord of the Rings set a standard that few, if any, other works of medieval fantasy have reached, or could ever reach, so it's obvious a mediocre work like the subsequent Hobbit trilogy led to outrage and disappointment. Game of Thrones did the very same for TV shows, and now presents seasons that are sub-par when compared to the initial ones. It's not a matter this particular show is guilty of, but given it set the standard, it makes it all the more obvious and disappointing.

@jedijax: I like Hobbits not any less than Lord of The Ring. Some people just love to be pretentious

@jedijax: Oh, hate clicks is a real thing. Look into it if you're interested.

If a fantasy film isn't as good or better than Lord of the Rings, it is automatically bad? That sounds like what you are saying.

A "sub-par" film can still add to the genre and be entertaining, especially when they do new things. That is what The Long Night has done. I think people come into these movies or episodes with exceptions, and when they are not met (even they were good) they leave with a negative impression. The bar can only be raise so often in a given frame of time.

To quote Gladiator, "Are you not entertained?!"
