RetroN 5 delayed until 2014

Launch of retro machine pushed back after faulty pins found in some units.

Hyperkin's retro gaming machine the RetroN 5 has been delayed to Q1 2014.

Set to launch in December, the company found that some packaged units had faulty pins, and is now delaying the product to correctly resolve the issue.

The RetroN 5 has slots for NES, SNES, GameBoy Advance, Genesis/Mega Drive, and Famicom cartridges, both NTSC and PAL, and features its own Bluetooth controller alongside support for original NES, SNES, and Genesis peripherals.

Another key feature in the retro device is its ability to output through HDMI, which would allow people a relatively easy way to play their old games on modern television sets.

“We apologize for the inconvenience,” said product manager Lawrence Lee. “Hyperkin would like to thank you for all the support you have given us throughout the development of the RetroN 5. We are looking forward to its release, estimated to be within the first quarter of 2014, as soon as the issue has been resolved.”

Every time I get something new, like Ipad, Wii, Pc, I, for some reason, spend all my time making sure it can play nes and mame and stuff. I spend more time and money retrofying my new tech and never play the games. (I m about halfway through secret of mana on ipad though) feels nice

How much are these to be sold for? Depending in the price I want one as I know of a games hop that sells retro games and they have a lot of titles.

What I have seen on reviews for the Retron 3, they are pretty well built clone consoles. The ability to use different systems all in one is not brand new but what sets these ones apart are the ability to use all original controllers for each system. I would be getting the Retron 3 if it wasnt for the fact that I have all three of those systems anyways, as well as emulators. But I still might invest in one if I can find it cheap just for the ease of testing/playing any of those systems without having to hook up each system. I could have one console always set up.

I don't see how this can compete with all the emulators already running on every single device and PC.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's emulators are largely inaccurate. Very few emulators are close to 100% accuracy, while some systems are impossible to emulate 100% due to quirky hardware configurations on the original consoles.

Too bad this won't be of use to me. Can't find any NES, SNES, Sega etc. stuff where I live anymore. Would be an awesome console to have :(

<< LINK REMOVED >> I might actually get one of these if it's not too expensive.

My friend recently gave me a bag of SNES/NES cartridges he was going to throw away :). There's also a local store (small chain actually, a few locations) that carries lots of old game cartridges, systems, and accessories.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Around $99.99 as from what I have seen on Stone Age Gamer for pre-order. An extra $18.00 will get you the Sega Master System cartridge adapter as well.

got a retron 3, works like a charm, I really love it. If anyone wants to play old games like mario and castlevania, I definitely recommend getting one and am very excited for the retron 5, delay is ok, but i seriously don't want to see this cancelled

Where has this been? This is straight-up news to me.

Given that it takes original controllers is a big factor, & no need to wrangle several systems with an adapter for hdmi... and even gba & famicom carts?

Makes me want to revamp my dusty library & add to it.

The only price I've found when googling is at $99; rather fair, yet a bit steep around the holidays...it's a good thing, it's getting delayed.

Wow this is pretty amazing. I've seen the ones that do both NES and SNES, but this is miles above that.

If they would put a slot for N64 on it I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Without it though it just feels like it is missing a massively important slot.

So is this purely for nostalgia gaming? Cos if you still have those old catridges with you that would mean you've finished the game 8 years ago and just want to re-experience it via HDMI?

I dont get the selling point of this thing

<< LINK REMOVED >> you can still buy many unplayed (by the buyer) or unbeaten and awesome games for those old school consoles, that's the selling point of it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Nothing beats popping in Mega Man, Zelda, Streets of Rage 2,Sonic the Hedgehog, Original Metal Gear, or any number of the hits that exist for these systems in my possession. I'll be grabbing one of these once they release. Based upon your confusion and not knowing what the selling point of this is I say "You had to be there to truly appreciate these simple, fun, engaging games to know why anyone would buy this and who they are targeting."

Yeah eBay prices get inflated. If you don't mind used half.com has some good deals. I would tend to think importing would be really expensive?

Like how they went with the Sega Genesis 6 button layout. That used to work out perfectly for games like SFII that had 3 punches and 3 kicks. You know what? New consoles today actually have room for a few more buttons on their controllers.

I still have all of those consoles so this is just a waste of money. Most of these are REALLY flimsy and break really easily.
