Respawn Revives Medal Of Honor With Above And Beyond

It's not Titanfall, but Respawn's new VR game does revisit a very familiar series.

To coincide with the opening day of the Oculus Connect 6 convention, Respawn and Oculus have announced the development of Medal of Honor: Above And Beyond, a new first-person shooter for Oculus Rift.

The game will be set during World War II, and you'll control an OSS agent who's charged with subverting and fighting back against Nazis, at times in cooperation with French resistance forces. According to Oculus, Above and Beyond will be a AAA experience that will offer both multiplayer and single-player modes, with the campaign projected to last roughly 10-12 hours.

Above and Beyond will also incorporate mini documentaries produced in cooperation with World War II veterans, which, according to Oculus, let you "sit with WWII veterans and survivors to hear their stories while witnessing first-hand the events and locations that have shaped our history." Respawn's Peter Hirschmann, who was the writer of the original Medal of Honor and is now directing of Above and Beyond, said "Interviewing veterans of WWII was an immense privilege and allowed us to ensure its respect and faithfulness to those who served. They’re helping us drive home the full emotional and historical weight of this subject matter with players in a way that really resonates."

The Rift exclusive (a potential Oculus Quest port was shot down by Hirschmann in a recent meeting with GameSpot) Medal of Honor: Above And Beyond is currently scheduled to release sometime in 2020.

Rift exclusive? The games pretty much dead on arrival then. Sony is basically keeping VR alive if you're not going to do a console port at some stage then you're losing a big chunk of what already is a small install base.

"Heck yea I'm down."

VR only?

Well, that stinks. The interviews sound interesting so it sucks they're limiting it.

@kgsg-19-2: It's better this way. VR needs exclusive games to grow, and if it had to support non-VR as well then it wouldn't be able to push some of the unique aspects of VR as much.

@darthbuzzard: Yea it's an exclusive just like xbox and ps have their own exclusives and so I've gotten used to being able to play both console's and pc exclusives, but now I'm not sure if I'm even going to get a high end gaming vr device or not.

So I typically ignore all things VR because I don't have the money to spend on it or the desire to play VR games from what little I've seen of them.

Having said that, I'm curious whether there are actually enough VR's out there to make major exclusive titles remotely profitable. I mean, making games is expensive, can they really afford to just not make the game for a large chunk of their potential player base?

@dancingcactus: I think most developers make Vr games or VR ports out of curiosity/interest or to get their foot in the new market (Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrafice). Not to necessarily make big profit or any profit (hence the reason most VR games are short). As for a “AAA” title like this, it is funded by Oculus (AKA Facebook’s bottomless pit of money). And from what I’ve seen, Oculus’ strategy seems to be much more long term. For example, they stopped making high end headsets and have been focusing on affordability and convenience (lower specs but no sensors to set up, no PC, etc.). I can almost guarantee Oculus isn’t even close to making a profit on anything right now. But by all this work they are doing, they are going to be well established and ahead by the time VR makes it big. The question is, can they survive long enough for that too happen? It’s a gamble and will depend on a lot of factors. Like they say, “You gotta spend money to make money.” So they will almost certainly not make a profit on this game either, but they are hoping it will bring a few more people to VR and to the Oculus platform specifically.

The interviews with actual WW2 vets will make the story hit home more than any other game of this genre I bet. Having said that, if it's exclusive to Oculus it won't get very far. I'd be glad to play it without VR if that's possible though.

Pretty clever wordplay, gotta give em props for that. The original phrase is "Above and Beyond the Call of Duty." you could even argue that someone was awarded the "Medal of Honor for going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty."

at any rate, pretty excited to get this for my Oculus!

So not only is EA again trying to ape Activision and CoD with all the hype around the new Modern Warfare game, they're also trying to jump on that hot new trend, VR, that's totally not a gimmick for those with more disposable income than sense.

I see nothing wrong in this plan.

@sbargovox3: You clearly don't know what you're talking about. This was in production before EA came into the light, and VR is definitely not a gimmick which given how you have no sense, I'm sure you haven't even tried it and are just judging it blindly.

@darthbuzzard: Sure buddy, you can tell yourself those privilege goggles weren't a massive waste of money that don't add anything to gaming. I know buyer's remorse makes you say crazy stuff. It's okay to say they suck, we'll understand.

@sbargovox3: Gaming on a TV is a far bigger gimmick. I'm sorry that you're too mindless to see that.

This upsets me. So much that I won’t go into detail about how I truly feel about Respawn and EA for this. This game won’t succeed in the long run, actually I’ll bet they don’t even plan for a long haul. Worst marketing strategy for an old franchise. Oculus? Do you expect a AAA profit? I’ll answer that, NO.

“Hey Earl!! There’s a squirrel in my truck!! Grab the Mosberg, remember to put in the turkey loads!!!”

What a joke.

@wrestlingdude: I'm sure EA has an idea of what kind of return they can expect from a VR title; it's not like VR is strange new territory at this point. And I wouldn't be surprised if Occulus is fronting a lot of money to have this game made.
