Respawn 'keeping an eye on' 3D

Infinity Ward cofounder Vince Zampella resurfaces at 3D Gaming Summit, recaps his latest company's brief history and future focus.

Who was there: USA Today gaming editor Mike Snider interviewed Respawn Entertainment general manager Vince Zampella.

What they said: Zampella started off by talking about Respawn's first year and a half of existence. The studio has all its major disciplines covered and has staffed up to 60 people.

When Respawn signed with EA Partners, one of the key issues was creative control over the resulting product. Zampella said Respawn owns that intellectual property and can now take it wherever it wants to go and do whatever is the best thing for the franchise. It's not necessarily a requirement to own the IP to have that control, but Zampella said it's helpful in getting employees to be invested in the project. If they're going to give their all to a project, they need to feel like they have a stake in it.

Zampella said he was always interested in games growing up and even used to compete in Magic: The Gathering tournaments. In high school, he was more of a closeted gamer, he said, but the hobby has become more accepted in recent years. As for how he got started making games, Zampella said he fell into it when a friend got hired on at a developer. He didn't have a college degree, though he was good with computers and games.

Eventually, Zampella wound up working at SegaSoft, developing a massively multiplayer online game called Skies that never came out. SegaSoft was the publisher, which led to Zampella meeting Jason West on the developer side of the equation at Paradigm Entertainment. When Zampella started up 2015 Inc., he tried to recruit West several times unsuccessfully but eventually convinced him to join up. One of the key moments in the developer's career happened shortly thereafter, when the studio was offered a job porting Medal of Honor: Frontline for the PC. Zampella told EA it was a terrible idea and offered instead to create an original game from the ground up, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.

As for his presence at the 3D Gaming Summit, Zampella said he just bought a 3D TV for his setup at home but wouldn't confirm that the first Respawn Entertainment game would make use of the technology. Moving on to current trends, Zampella addressed the free-to-play model, saying that right now, there are different expectations between what people expect from full-priced packaged games and free-to-play titles. However, he says that separation might not exist in the future. He believes there's a spot for the current model of AAA games in the future, but if people can get something that's 90 percent as good for free, Zampella said that could change.

Quote: "We are keeping a close eye on what's developing and where it makes sense."--Zampella on 3D gaming.

Big Problem with 3DTV is you cannot play in 1920x1080 at 60hz because hdmi cannot support it. Your stuck at 1920x1080 at 24hz which totally sucks because you have the feeling the game is lagging like hell or you play in 720p........ We need HDMI 2.0!!!!!!!!!!

As I stated in a different headline post, game makers can develop and play with 3D all they want, so long as they leave the option of playing the same game in 2D. I realize there is small but growing demand for it, but I hope developer's don't leave those of us that prefer 2D in the dust.

I really don't like 3D, I find it impacts negatively on my gaming experiences and would have preferred the creator spent the time adding new gaming concepts and ideas to the overall game.

@zulwalks I don't think he's tired of the Cod franchise, he's suing Activision May 7th of next year for rights to the series, the lawsuit also includes the royalties Activision didn't pay him following the release of MW2 as well as compensation for the employees who didn't get their bonuses as promised. As for the remaining Infinity Ward staff, Activision is blackmailing them by telling them that they will get a 2.3% raise on the bonus that was promised them for staying and working on MW3. Cod Factory....

Y'all keep saying that this guy should keep his mouth shut untill he gets some games out but the truth is he did. His team created the difinitive medal of honor game and also one of the finest shooters around (cod 1,2 and 4) the only reason why he didn't really create a new game is because of Activision, who is currently treating COD like one of its legs (the other of course is whatever blizzard makes). and i can tell he just got sick of COD while he was still in IW.....just look at MW2

Everytime I look at that Vince Zampellas picture, he reminds me of Harvey Dent from the Dark Knight.

I'll care what these guys say when they get some games out on the market. Right now all they seem to be doing is fighting Activision, and hinting at releasing a game in 2014.

3D is a joke. 3D movies have quickly gotten old. 3D TVs aren't selling as well as TV manufacturers would like. The 3DS has turned into a fiasco for Nintendo. Coincidence? I think not.

@ drangel_jam I agree, a better title would have been something like "The future/history of Respawn".

I don't know if it's just me, but I don't see this as relevant or meaningful since this developer hasn't actually developed a game yet.

Well let me know when its 90% as good, because right now F2P games don't even offer 10% of the experience.

The irony of it all is that these guys are the true fathers of Modern Warfare. People who call themselves C.O.D fans don't do research over the guys who made MW and MW2, or even the struggles they underwent. These guys opened up a studio of their own after Activision claimed their royalties and deliberately withheld bonuses for the entire Infinity Ward staff resulting in 40 staff members walking off the job. Activision turned Infinity Ward into a Cod factory and they wouldn't stand for it. Yet people are going to flood stores this November demanding MW3 without knowing they've been duped out of 60$. If the original Infinity team worked on MW3, it would look completely different than this copy paste rush job. All people seem to care about is how high their next killstreak is going to be rather than standing up for corporate injustice. Where have our brains gone people?
