Resistance dev reveals canceled pinball game

Insomniac reveals it worked on downloadable game 1080Pinball in early 2007 that would be "the most realistic pinball simulation ever"; shut down for unknown reasons.

Resistance and Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Games has revealed one of its canceled projects, and it's not in the vein of anything the studio has ever produced. An update on the developer's Facebook Timeline reveals that Insomniac began work in January 2007 on 1080Pinball, what it hoped would be "the most realistic pinball simulation ever."

Insomniac's pinball game never made it to release.
Insomniac's pinball game never made it to release.

A downloadable game, the project was to run at 1080p and 60 frames per second and simulate the weight of a ball, gravity, and table friction. Additionally, 1080Pinball was designed with Gran Turismo-like progression and would have included tables influenced by "some of the greatest tables ever made."

Insomniac called it quits on the project in mid-2007 but did not say why. The developer shipped three PlayStation 3 titles in 2007 and 2008: Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty, and Resistance 2.

More details about 1080Pinball will be divulged during the company's upcoming podcast.

News story on a game that was cancelled almost 5 year ago? I love the caption on the picture..."never made it to release." They cancelled it within 6 months of starting it! It barely got worked on let alone never made it to release.

Unknown reasons? I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say that those "unknown reasons" amounted to some younger worker who's played a modern video game finally speaking up in a meeting and telling everyone, "Hey, guys? Even if we're right and we do create the most realistic pinball simulation ever...well...that still sounds incredibly boring. Who below the age of 50 is going to want to buy it?"

....and I bet their game would have blown the doors off Pinball FX. Honestly though I miss real pinball machines....whenever I see one I have to play a couple games, I tend to ignore arcades unless they have some sort of oddity that you can't get on consoles...

@Jaxith I agree with you. As much fun as a video pinball might be, it will NEVER simulate the feel of a real table. And like you, I'd have like to have seen what Insomniac came up with. Maybe one day........

I like pinball. I'm skeptical that a video pinball game could really come out well enough to truly emulate the real thing, but I wouldn't have complained to see this come to fruition.

When Midway shuttered its pinball business (before eventually going bankrupt), a little part of my childhood died. I have yet to play a single video reproduction that matched the raw joy of smacking a real ball with flippers. Possibly with force feedback and motion sensing remotes it can get there, but I have yet to get the same tactile pleasure from video pinball in over 25 years of gaming, and I love me some pinball. I don't know where insomniac was headed - 1080p doesn't really blow up my skirt - but any attempt to bring pinball home is alright in my book. Maybe the Rockstar folks would be interested: They did make << LINK REMOVED >>.

Ok, at first I was all like, thank God they cancelled it... then I read this: "A downloadable game, the project was to run at 1080p and 60 frames per second and simulate the weight of a ball, gravity, and table friction. Additionally, 1080Pinball was designed with Gran Turismo-like progression and would have included tables influenced by "some of the greatest tables ever made.""

@Hurvl I don't know about you but there are not that many places around to play pinball where I live and I don't have 5 grand laying around to buy my own table. So I guess I'll have to make do with video pinball.

Never send a computer/console to do a pinball machine's job. The experience of a pinball game is so much intertwined with standing at a machine, that it's hard to see how a virtual version would work.

"the most realistic pinball simulation ever" The premise is great. Games with best premises always get cancelled. C'est la vie.

Must... resist... making reference to a certain N64 snowboarding game... In all seriousness though, I get the strange feeling they probably might have cancelled this game because of Zen Pinball coming out; either that, or they wanted to spend more time on their bigger titles instead of concentrating on one specific PSN title. We may never know.

Haven't played a pinball game since Psycho Pinball on the Mega Drive. I would have at least given it a go, shame but great games were obviously released in the wake of its demise.

My guess is that if they're making a big deal about it now, they're at least putting out feelers for restarting the project. I'd love to see them do this, though there's already several for Sony's systems, including Zen Pinball/Marvel Pinball, Pinballistic (wish they'd release some more tables), Pinball Heroes for PSP, and several disc-based versions of Pinball Hall of Fame (Williams for PSP and PS3 and Gottlieb for PSP). Zen/Marvel will soon be released on Vita, and the new downloadable version of Pinball Hall of Fame (Pinball Arcade) should be released in the next couple of months for Vita and PS3, complete with four tables (including tables from Stern and Bally) and downloadable tables. That's a lot of competition, but even still, that still makes it rarer than an FPS and there are plenty of players, like me, who would buy another game for the variety.

This is interesting news to me. It shows me what could have been, and what could be if they actually finish this game. HD Pinball in 1080p with realistic physics sounds like something I would've actually played, even though I don't normally play pinball games. Not that there are that many nowadays.
