Capcom's latest Resident Evil HD re-releases were a big hit, it seems. The publisher has announced that the new versions of Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have collectively shipped 1.5 million copies worldwide.

This was announced in a tweet, in which Capcom also thanked fans for supporting the franchise. Importantly, this is the number of copies shipped, not sold through to consumers.

The Resident Evil 6 remaster came out in March, with 5 launching in June and 4 coming out in August to complete the new HD trilogy. The games are available physically and digitally in North America and sell for $20 each.

North America makes up the lion's share of shipments, coming in at 1 million units, Capcom said in a press release. The publisher also boasted that the Resident Evil franchise now stands at 69 million units sold worldwide across 111 different games.

Capcom is no stranger to HD re-releases, as the company has also put out remastered versions of the original Resident Evil and Resident Evil 0. A Resident Evil 2 remake is also on the way. Outside of that franchise, Capcom launched Dead Rising 1 and 2 on new-generation consoles.

You can probably expect more. Capcom said in May 2015 that it was encouraged by the success of Resident Evil HD remastered version so much so that HD remasters and re-releases would become a key area of growth for the company.

2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise, as the first game debuted in 1996 in Japan. The Pokemon and Tomb Raider franchises also celebrate their 20th birthdays this year.
