Resident Evil Village Wraps Up RE7's Story

The upcoming Resident Evil game will continue Ethan Winters' story from RE7 and will star Chris Redfield.

Resident Evil Village details were recently divulged in a Famitsu interview with producers Tsuyoshi Kanda and Pete Fabiano. The interview was translated and shared on Twitter by Resident Evil historian Alex Aniel. There were a few interesting tidbits revealed about the upcoming game, including how Village will conclude Ethan's story, which started in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard--although its producers insist that fans refer to the game as Resident Evil Village, not Resident Evil 8. Given the logo for the game, which highlights the VIII, that could be a tough request. Here's what we learned about Capcom's upcoming sequel.

According to the translated interview, Resident Evil Village is about 60% complete and has been in development for about 3.5 years. It also serves as the conclusion to Ethan Winters' story that started in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard; however, the developer didn't make it clear which of the two mid-game choices is canon. In Resident Evil 7, you're asked to choose who to save between your wife and another character, which results in some striking differences. They also said that the title emphasizes the village because it is "another protagonist" in the game.

Village also brings back two staples of the RE franchise--inventory management and puzzle solving--but no specifics were given. These systems have been somewhat different depending on the games, with action-oriented entries putting less focus on the puzzles. They also said that making the game exclusively for next-gen allowed them to make loading times nearly nonexistent, giving the game a deeper level of immersion. Unfortunately, they didn't expand on what they meant by this.

Resident Evil Village releases in 2021 on Xbox Series X, PS5, and PC.

maybe i should be happy of re7 not having bigger sequelbaiting cliffhangers but i dont really see what re8 needs to conclude

besides i chose to save zoe and regretted it about 3 minutes later realizing it was obviously the wrong choice and disregarded from there on

still. re8 is the only sure nextgen game that i will buy and play.

- halo dropped after halo 4

- splinter cell dropped after conviction

- mass effect dropped after 3

- ninja gaiden, dead rising, arkham and a couple of others kinda just faded

- elder scrolls 6 was highest on the list until f76 and blades but now we all know it will be somehow liveservice fueled platform instead of an epic tale so f it. there is small hope but currently i went from day1 buy to no-buy even when on sale.

and yet re8 even looked kinda promising. more fresh but familiar stuff in a cool transylvaniaish environment and it seems the dance between ethan, chris, the old man and the other faces can have everything. if they just dont skip on things to add resistance type junk

I liked RE7 way, way more than I expected.

I even loved all the bonus mini-games, which is just never the case for me.

I liked the original games for their atmosphere, but ultimately the addition of the sharp, perfectly balanced, rhythmic gameplay of RE4 is what turned me into a junkie. It's for that reason I salvaged enjoyment from RE5 too. And RE6 for me ruined almost everything, so I'm just impressed they were able to turn the series around.

I'm so ready for RE8.

@naryanrobinson: i don't know what it is about resident evil. i can normally form a critical opinion about any game i play, but with resident evil i just love them all. i love the originals, i love 4, 5, 6, re5 being my favourite over all, i love ORC (best zombies in any resident evil game i've seen, but it got trashed hard by reviews), i love 7, loved both remakes. the only resident evil games i really didn't enjoy were the outbreak ones, where you had a virus from the start and the game gives you the feeling it has to be rushed because you're on a timer. i'm also a huge fan of mercs, especially re5 mercs.

@RaveNRolla: I give RE5 more shit than it deserves, mainly because by that time I'd already moved to live in China, and I had no friends to play with. Even now, I've long since unlocked all the single-player achievements, and still never played RE5 with a human, and the experience was so badly marred for it. All I could do was look at all the ways it fell short of RE4.

RE6... just... wow... I couldn't even play it, I gave up after a few hours. Which is a real shame, because I know there's a huge amount of work put into it. But there were just a few things I could never get the hang of. The UI for one, Christ... the inventory management system for another. The QT events for another. The massive inconsistency between characters... it was all just pissing me off so much I dropped it completely. A huge shame...

@naryanrobinson: my major problems with re6 were forced waypoints (this should not be in any game ever) that you could only turn off by turning the whole hud off and that you couldn't choose which weapon to equip (or rather that you couldn't unequip weapons). once a character picked up a weapon you couldn't get rid of it anymore, besides restarting the story. the game also just gave you weapons at the end of a chapter if you purposefully didn't pick it up during.

but the gameplay itself, the 4 entertwining stories, the new melee stun mechanics and the sheer content i liked a lot. the mercs in re6 was also pretty sweet. it's a good thing i don't care about what other people think in that regard and can still enjoy games. also quickshots with Helena's Hydra were absolutely bonkers fun!

@RaveNRolla: Sounds like we basically had the same opinion of the game, except that the sort of things that annoyed you, annoyed me a lot, lot more.

Those exact sorts of things that you mentioned, I quickly identified about 20 of them, soon realised how much more similar shit I'd likely encounter, and then just uninstalled.

Someone could probably make a patch just a few hundred MB in size that could fix almost all my problems. I don't think I've ever encountered a game with so much effort put into it, but with so many small design mistakes. It feels like a huge team of professionals had a donkey for a creative lead.

Here's to hoping it has that awesome triple A VR again. Best gaming experience in years for me, with RE7. Finished it back to back three times, in VR!

I thought RE7 was done and closed. Seems more like an excuse to tie Village to it. And then, as it was stated, there's the issue with vastly different choices. Maybe they will use a Dragon Break!

@jedijax: RE8 was actually Revelations 3 all this time, and the idea had been that game explores Eveline's origins, but Capcom was so impressed with how the game looked they decided to rejig it as RE8, so it's accurate to say RE8 was forced to connect with it rather than RE7 was forced to connect with RE8. Never really understood why they bothered bringing Ethan back since he is clearly not the type to do this sort of thing again, but apparently in the trailer for RE8 Chris kills Mia (hard to tell, though).

@Barighm: maybe the game still has to do with Evie and they ask the Winters because of their connection to her? no idea though. i'm just happy Chris looks more like Chris.
