Resident Evil Village Isn't Named Resident Evil 8, Capcom Says

Capcom has dropped the numerical numbering to try and shift focus to the sequel's setting.

Since its reveal, it hasn't been exactly clear whether to include numerals in Resident Evil Village's title. In a recent interview, developer Capcom said it omitted the number entirely from the title to focus in on the game's setting. This is certain to stop people from calling the game Resident Evil 8 anyway.

Speaking with Famitsu (translated by Kotaku), Resident Evil Village producers Tsuyoshi Kanda and Peter Fabiano were asked why the game's title omits the roman numeral for eight that was featured in the trailer.

Now Playing: More Story And Gameplay Details For Resident Evil 8: Village

"You could call the actual Village another character in the game, and we did that because we would like players to understand that", the pair answered, before expressing their hope for players to abbreviate the game with "Village" and not "RE8".

That's a tough ask, given that Resident Evil Village is a direct sequel to Resident Evil 7 and the conclusion to its story. Village will once again star Ethan Winters, who just can't seem to escape the world he was introduced to in the previous game. It will also see series stalwart Chris Redfield return as the pair seek survival in a new spooky town filled with all sorts of monsters, including werewolves.

Resident Evil Village is slated to launch on Xbox Series X, PS5, and PC sometime in 2021. There have been annual Resident Evil games for the past three years now, with a remake of Resident Evil 3 launching earlier this year.

How can you call it a mainline entry & it not be Resident Evil 8??? Every other side story Resident Evil wasn't considered a mainline entry (Code: Veronica, Revelations 1 & 2, Deam Aim, & Survivor). So now this is a mainline entry but not RE8??? I mean you can do that its Capcom's game but after having the numbered ones be mainline & then show this trailer with the VILL highlighted to make it look like the Roman numeral 8, you backtrack & say its not RE8??? Ok. Makes no sense but hey I'm still getting it anyway cause its Resident Evil my favorite game series of all time.

I'm not a huge public relations expert, but I'm pretty sure like rule number one is you never change the name of your product after a big reveal. Oh well.

What a crappy marketing move. Everybody knows official series titles sell better than spinoffs. Had you kept your trap shut, sales would've skyrocketed. But now that you mentioned it's not 8, enjoy a dent in sales.

@Person4: Oh, it's still RE8. This might be some weird pre-damage control move to prevent some perceived inevitable backlash when fans discover the game takes place almost entirely within one open-world map that is the village and everything else, like the castle, is mostly just one-off dungeons.

@Person4: I see no dent in sales whatsoever. This game looks amazeballs, and people who would buy the latest RE game aren't going to skip it just because it isn't called RE8.

Not really a theory. It was stated in the leak that happened months back that revealed everything about this game. It was originally going to be Rev 3 but it was playtesting so well internally that Capcom gave them more time to turn it into a full fledged sequel.

It had have "Biohazard" as the subtitle and incooperated the roman numerals into the title, it's more or less similar.

Capcom: "It's not Resident Evil 8."

Everyone: "But... the Marketing highlighted the Vill in Village to call out the Roman symbol for 8."

Capcom: "Well... f*ck....."

Resident Evil 7 started off well and then I became bored of it.... like all Resident Evils. It’s hard to keep suspense for that long, which is why P.T is my favourite horror game of all time. You can only do it for a few hours at the most.

@Terrorantula: I think RE's always been best when it's not suspenseful or attempting any kind of psychological horror. Jump scares and shooting zombies with somewhat limited resources is what RE's good at (sometimes, anyway).

And telling supremely dumb stories. : p

@Terrorantula: So...why keep playing them? I got bored of FF15 in chapter 3...and stopped playing it. Then uninstalled it. Never played it again.

All this does is tell me you've got no discipline.

When you try to make something sound far more deep than it ever was or will be. It's RE8, so f**k off.

You don't stylize it Resident Evil VIIIage for no reason. Stupid marketing bulls**t.

They literally highlighted the Vill in village to show the 8 in roman numerals in the trailer. I suspect this is highly mistranslated nothing and these people said no such thing.

I never really played these games for their story or characters and don’t care if its RE 8, 10, 12 etc.. their focus should just be on making the best RE game ever made while fully utilizing next gen hardware.

Just please god don’t make it like RE7…I don’t do running, and I don’t play hide and seek, and cutscenes should be kept short & sweet.. like only before a boss battle.

RE2 was a step in the right direction but still felt like a PS1 game with better graphics. At least the setting of this game looks more interesting.

@tingtong: Going by the amount of characters in the reveal trailer, this is going to feature even more choreographed set pieces than Seven, Tingtong. That section with the Huntsman and the Werewolves jumping over the house and dragging Ethan downwards through the wooden floor is likely going to outstay its welcome even during maiden playthroughs.

@tingtong: I always find it weird when people draw attention to the run and hide mechanics in RE7 but then praise RE2 which had the exact same mechanics in Mr. X. Not only that, but you have to evade Mr. X for far longer on multiple occasions, and he chases you through the entire police station and not just certain small sections. That said, they were far better in RE2make.

@Barighm: It's the layout of the police station which makes it effective, Barighm. Seven features the stalker component only at the beginning of the game, before the player has had enough time to break the environment's linearity. At that point, exploration is developer driven. Mister X doesn't show up until its dynamic can be properly executed. Managing its threat within an open ended environment is what makes it compelling. Make no mistake, my friend, those games are not alike.

They didn't insist on anything. They literally said they'd be happy if fans could remember Village. They didn't in any way claim it wasn't Resident Evil 8 or that it shouldn't be called that. They even said there's no official abbreviation. They just hope Village is memorable.

@Deltath: But there is an official abbreviation. It's RE8. The game's trailer literally announced it as such. Saying there is no official abbreviation now is a deservedly "WTF?" moment.

We're probably going to discover these are just some clowns who misread a memo or something.
