Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Opens Bigger In China Than Newest Star Wars

Big figures for China.

After premiering in the US and Europe in January, the newest Resident Evil movie, The Final Chapter, opened in the massive Chinese market this weekend--and it did very well.

It made $33 million on its first day and $70 million after just two days ,according to Deadline. By comparison, Star Wars: Rogue One made $31 million for its opening weekend in China (a three-day tally).

Another comparison to make is to the Michael Fassbender-starring Assassin's Creed, which made no more than $7 million for its opening in China, according to Deadline.

The Final Chapter has now made around $175 million worldwide.

Like Warcraft, The Final Chapter is faring much better internationally than domestically. The movie made only $26.5 million in the US for its lifetime, a figure that the movie surpassed in China on its first day.

The Final Chapter, the sixth movie in the series, is apparently the last one from director Paul W.S. Anderson and franchise star Milla Jovovich. Across six movies, the Resident Evil film series has passed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, making it far and away the most successful video game movie franchise ever.

As for the Resident Evil video game series, Resident Evil 7 has shipped 3 million copies. The game's newest DLC, Not A Hero, is coming out this Spring.

In other movie news, we'll report back with a box office report for the US later today. Additionally, we'll have a roundup of all the winners from the 89th Academy Awards tonight.

So that means that Chinese people have a bad taste for movies. Barely newsworthy.

@edhc44: I enjoy RE movies, saw everyone in theaters, yeah they're bad and cheesy, but sometimes those types of movies dig into you. Like Sharknado I hate those movies, and why SyFy cancels good shows, but keep funding those is beyond me. Sometimes somethings so bad you can't help but love it.

You'd be surprised how many ppl from other countries have never even seen a Star Wars movie in their life, so they couldn't give 2 f***s about it, especially if they were born in the 90s. Just saying, this doesn't surprise me at all since Resident Evil more than likely had a bigger influence in asian countries than Star Wars ever did

@d_: your average chinese probably didn't have a tv when star wars became a thing. never mind the theater.

@veryDERPY: Outside of the huge cities they still dont. Not any theaters at least - Spent some time countryside and most are just busy trying to live life and survive.

It's probably the cause of marketing and who and how many see(s) the marketing.

Good. Rogue one was a shit star wars movie, adding nothing to the main movie. On the other hand, its a pretty good space opera movie.

Avatar image for xenomorphalien

@sakaixx: Add nothing to VII? It was explaining the events that led to IV.

Avatar image for hazuki

@xenomorphalien: It didn't explain anything new, no. We already knew the plans for the death star were stolen by the rebels. That literally was the story. 'Rogue one' tried to make a 'epic' about stealing 'plans...' It really was like one of those cheap 'hey theres something big and new! heres a me too comic!' but just on the big screen.

Doesn't make it a bad movie on its own. But both it and 'force awakens' are essentially fan movies when you get down to the nitty gritty.

@hazuki: I believe VII's main purpose was to introduce people to Star Wars but also prove that the franchise is in good hands.

Good, the two new Star Wars movies were utter trash. I have no hope for the next one.

Avatar image for deactivated-5c56012aaa167

@darksouls: Rogue one was good but unfortunately it didn't add anything New to Star Wars universe.(every prequel movie added something new to SW lore while the two Disney movies have recycled planets and nothing really new)

I also don't have any hope for 8.it probably become the Remake of Episode 5.

China is kind of famous for liking horrible flops of foreign movies and ignoring decent ones.
