Resident Evil: Revelations 2 PS4 Patch Brings Frame Rate Closer to Xbox One's

The update improves performance ahead of the addition of online Raid mode support later this month.

Since the release of the first episode last month, players have been complaining about performance issues with the PlayStation 4 version of Resident Evil: Revelations 2. A recent update improves the PS4 game's frame rate, though it reportedly still suffers from some issues.

Digital Foundry examined how the patched version of Revelations 2 on PS4 compares with both the Xbox One and unpatched PS4 versions. It's a notable improvement, estimated to be anywhere from 10-15 percent better than the unpatched version.

However, while cinematics and certain segments run more smoothly on PS4 following the patch than on Xbox One, it's the Xbox One version that manages to usually stay closer to 60 frames per second. Digital Foundry's analysis found the lowest frame rate on PS4 following the patch was 31fps, compared with 27 in the unpatched PS4 version and 44 on Xbox One.

"Overall though, there's still the sense that Resident Evil Revelations 2 is one of the more poorly optimized titles based on the mature MT Framework engine," the report states. It notes that their high-end PC was unable to run the game at 60fps at a 1440p resolution, whereas older, better-looking MT Framework games like Resident Evil 5 and 6 could run at that frame rate even at 4K.

Revelations 2's final episode was released earlier this week alongside the full retail version. There's no word on whether Capcom has any further patches planned that will impact performance, but we do know that online support for Raid mode will be coming in a free update on March 31.

this game doesnt feel like a resi game to me i dont know what it is it just doesnt feel like resi,

it could be because of the smooth framerate i dont know, does anyone else get it?

and yet another time the PS4 issue gets hidden under the rug....it's funny 1080p vs 900 xbox is stable but lower res everyone loses their mines. PS4 get its res but has frames issues (this is only game) and everyone's like meh.

This gen is crap in terms of false promise and shitty software releases, iv seen more remastered old stuff than actual new games. Exclusives like uncharted which is over a year away, with the nature and uncertainty of if itll run at the promised 60 frames just isnt enough, well for me anyway, some games do, but as usual the ones you want to don't. Unless you build your own pc and spend a little more, then they do, just not uncharted, but hey its one game. Soz about the rant

<< LINK REMOVED >> this guy over here haha thats funny. if PS4 is being held back then why is it having problems with something the "weaker" console can do? because PS4 games HAVE to ship 1080p and occasionally they get frame problems cuz the devs couldn't do it stable. Xbox has their frames be stable and just lower the res when that happens. OR both consoles just lower their fps down to 30 again.

btw how did xbox hold ya back for order? 1080/30fps?or killzones multiplayer not being full 1080?

How about you fix your garbage framerate issue for all versions. This problem isn't just exclusive to the PS 4. All versions get this along with lag that shouldn't even be there to start with and garbage loading. Was looking forward to this game but the framerate issues along with lag makes me not want to even play. Seriously. Release a damn patch for everyone,crapcom.

Yeah, this game feels really poorly optimized when playing for PC... not to mention it is just kind of disappointing in general. I really really want to love the Revelations series, but both feel kind of like Wal-Mart Resident Evil games... (or TLoU)...


Glad Capcom released the REmake or I would be a lot more grumpy about Revelations 2 being so "meh"

Wow, whoever is optimizing this needs to find a different job. Can't even run the game at 1440p 60fps on a high-end pc? That's just pitiful, I could do that with un-patched ac unity, and I don't need to remind people how poorly optimized that game was. It's not like this game is advanced in any way, shape, or form.

Res on the other hand?> you have to train your eye so to speak and be so super used to 60FPS games that you can tell going back and if you game on only ps4 then you arent like that.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Actually not the case, few games from end of last year showing to be more stable on Xbox One, including AC Unity and GTAV. It's that the X1 has a more powerful CPU which helps with AI intensive game, the PS4's more powerful GPU cannot help with this so AI intensive games should perform a little better of X1 and they do.


Also the X1's 32MB of ESRAM can hold up to 6GB of textures at any one time which will also help in some engines.


Finally the PS4 is having trouble with anisotropic filtering making games looking a little soft, xbox one doing full 16xAF.


All this stuff is on digital foundry if you want to learn more, don't just assume the PS4 is better in all regards, it's much easier to develop for and should do slightly better in GPU intensive games, but not CPU bound games.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I don't assume the PS4 is better in all regards. I have both consoles. The Xbox One has a SLIGHTLY faster CPU, yes. And it does benefit it in some games. However, I think Xbox fantards have latched on to the frame rate issue a bit too much and made it out to be a bigger problem than it is, because while the Xbox One version of GTA might run slightly smoother, the PS4 version runs absolutely fine. I rarely notice any frame drops at all. That’s a small price to pay for the extra detail seen on PS4 version. But then again, it’s the same with PS4 fantards saying how much better PS4 versions look. I have a 55 inch TV and even 900p games hold up well against 1080p versions. So yeah, whilst they may be a little sharper on PS4 to people who give a rats aśś, they look absolutely fine on the Xbox. Please don’t mistake me for a fanboy just because I was defending the PS4. I see this “frame rate” issue far too much and I think it’s way overblown, as is the resolution difference.

I also own both consoles and i can truly say there is very little difference between the two consoles, give someone a blind test on games with 900p vs 1080p and i bet they couldn't tell you because the 900p game is always upscaled.


The PS4 sometimes looks quite soft and thanks to digital foundry we now no why, it's not rendering 16xAF like the X1 is, that means a 1080p with low AF settings can look softer than a 900p game is 16xAF. Also not running full 16xAF reduces the load on the GPU allowing the PS4 to hit 1080p.


Both sides making a big deal out of it but the reality is at the moment PS4 has the resolution edge and X1 has the framerate edge. All's fair in love and war mate.

Meanwhile in the AAA cross plat i just named a few off top of my head dragon age was another but when its not the case either A both hit it fine B both were lowered C xbox lowered its res to get stable.

It's funny you say its blown out of proportion....so does xbox when its at 900p and anyone on internet can see what that causes. Personally The issues on PS4 arent really a big deal though some games they had it bad before a patch. Although people blow the 1080p thing out of proportion so i find it funny that when shown a similar issue with frames on PS4 everyone is like ahhh doesn't matter looks fine.

Yeah... read my other comment below this one. I completely agree with you about the resolution difference. It's insignificant. A couple of games on the Xbox run at a few more frames per second than PS4. But most AAA multiplats on the PS4 run at BOTH a higher resolution AND a higher frame rate. The only time this isn't the case is when it's a CPU bound game like AC: Unity. But Xbox fans have got it into their heads that this is the defining difference between the two consoles; that PS4 has better resolution, whilst Xbox has better frame rates. That just isn't true. It's not simply a choice of one or the other when choosing which console to purchase your multiplats on. More often than not, the PS4 is superior in both cases, which is why I buy multiplats on the PS4 and stick to the great exclusives for the Xbox. That's not to take anything away from the Xbox. It's still a great console and yes those differences are always blown out of proportion. Games still look great on the Xbox regardless.
