Resident Evil Reboot Movie Cast Announced, New Details Revealed

The new Resident Evil film is one of several new upcoming projects based on the classic game series.

While the most recent Resident Evil movie series ended in 2017 with The Final Chapter, there's still plenty to come from the long-running zombie action franchise. Last month, it was reported that there are two Resident Evil shows in development for Netflix, and there's also a movie reboot in the works too. The first cast members from the film have been revealed, as well as some details about what to expect.

As reported by Deadline, the movie will feature characters that will be familiar to fans of the classic video games series. Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) will play Claire Redfield, with Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell (Upload) as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon S. Kennedy, and Neal McDonough (Yellowstone) as William Birkin.

Now Playing: The Complete Resident Evil Timeline Explained

The movie will be directed by Johannes Roberts, who helmed the hit shark thriller 47 Meters Down and its sequel, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. In a statement, Roberts spoke about what fans could expect from the latest Resident Evil film. "I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences," he said.

In addition, producer Robert Kulzer revealed the film's setting. "After a dozen games, six live-action movies, and hundreds of pages of fan fiction, we felt compelled to return to the year 1998, to explore the secrets hidden in the walls of the Spenser Mansion and Raccoon City," he said. The movie doesn't have a release date yet.

In terms of the Netflix Resident Evil shows, one will be live-action, while the other will be CG animated. The live-action series will not be based on any of the games, but will instead focus on 14-year-old sisters Jade and Billie Wesker, the daughters of Albert Wesker, who are living in a place called New Raccoon City. As for the animated series, that will be titled Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, and will center around Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Neither show has a release date yet, but Infinite Darkness is expected in 2021.

This is going to be terrible. It’s miscast and it’s directed by a guy who made not one, but two terrible shark movies. Yeah. I watched them. They were really bad. Especially the 2nd one. Only watched that, because it was on Prime in 4K. I wish I could have that time back, but we all make mistakes.

i watched every RE movie, i played the games multiple times over and after the other films i have no interest in this Re-Boot at all.

look at my other post on another movie article, Hollywood is unoriginal and just keeps rebooting a reboot of a prior reboot.

make an original movie/thought - reboots = no one cares

@karmo64: she is half Nigerian but that’s not the point. I don’t want to see any white people in the next Equalizer, nor any Asians as the next Batman so why am I not allowed to want to see the next Jill Valentine being white which she has been since 1997, which is since I have played as her. Why does one immediately not accept these days if people just want politics and race issues out of a movie by just wanting to keep things as they always were.

@phili878: these are fictional characters so not sure why it matters. It's not like they have a black person playing Abraham Lincoln; that would be misleading.

@karmo64: it matters to me and many because we want to keep this exactly what you said, fiction. To escape from reality. But the movie industry keeps destroying this by bringing politics and racial issues into this. To conclude, happy new year man, all the best 😊

@phili878: if the fictional character wasn't tied to a race story-wise, say like Ragnar Lothbrok or Black Panther, I'm not sure why changing the race changes the character's identity and what the character stands for. I hope to have a convo with someone that thinks the way you do at some point in life to understand how race came to be this important. Happy new year to you too!

The first thing that one should consider before making video game movies, is sticking to the source material. Casting people that look nowhere near the actual characters is a bad idea and it has nothing to do with racism.

@fotis52: The problem with using source material is anal fans criticising it for either taking the characters in a different direction or sticking to the source, thereby not adding anything new. Either way, you can't win.

@xgalacticax: infinity war and endgame for one prove that wrong. sure there are the 3 mega nerds somewhere who say "but its not infinity gauntlet" but general concensus is clear

this guy is like i wanna stick true to sourceand then shows middle finger right from the starting gate to the source. who can blame?

I do not want a black Jill Valentine and a hispanic Leon S. Kennedy.

@XBgyManX: The girl looks like Jill and looks like a tanned white girl, so she can play Jill in my book. Also, she is mixed. She looks black to white people, and she looks white to black people, so people should leave her alone. She can play either a white woman or a black woman. But the guy looks nothing like Leon, so yea, they should have probably found someone else for him.

@xgalacticax:

No, the girl is good looking but she looks nothing like Jill regardless of race. Jill (ignoring that shitty remake of RE3) looks like a Russian underwear model. She has a petite heart-shaped face with a pointy small nose.

The actress in question did a good job in the marvel movie she was in, but that does not change anything. Characters should actually look the part, training people and giving them, acting lessons is possible, but changing their appearance more as much as would be needed here is not realistic.

The people doing the casting and the person hiring the director should all be fired.

In what back-asswards mirror dimension was that movie not just flat out garbage?
I can't even fathom how a sequel for that got greenlit.

Can't say I agree much with the casting so far. Robbie Amell as Chris is about the only actor that somewhat resembles the character. And I suppose Tom Hopper is SOMEWHAT close to Wesker, assuming his attire matches the character.

However, most of the other casting seems a bit....off. But its all good, I'll wait for more info before I get worked up over anything about this.

You are way too nice. The only thing about Hopper that resembles Wesker is that both of them have short hair. Hopper look like a goofball. If they ever made a live action movie for MNickey Mouse, Hopper could easily play Goofy.

Eh, if it's decent i'll watch it but my hopes aren't high.

Seems to me video game adaptations tend to work better in animation.

@DuoMaxwell007: Sonic was animated. The definition of "live action" seems to have... eroded.

Go to the credits before arguing against... Those people had to work twice as hard in this movie's case

The casting of Jill (my favorite RE character) killed the show already for me. Hannah John-Kamen is a great actress, but I do not see Jill in her. Was this black-washing necessary?

And they made an old hag play Claire. Why they didn't simply cast the model that played her for the new RE game is beyond me. At least then we could have said that she looked like Claire in the remake of the second game.

@josefo: Sorry times have changed and Whites cannot always be the hero these days as people are waking up. The question is raised why you want Blacks and Latinos and others to pay money to watch Whites always in the lead and heroic roles where everyone else plays second fiddle. again times has changed and you better get used to it. But for I do not really care for an RE reboot anyway as it does not matter what color they are as these characters are Sci-Fi anyway

@lonewolf1044: ... resident evil was created in 1996. so its really new. they can easily make a new zombie thing that has black and other minority ethnicies

besides no one has ever been proud of black johnny storm or black genie. black panther, blade and miles morales made people go wild and activists still cite black panther quotes. those 3 were made from start to be black while respecting traditions and personality traits and consistency

@lonewolf1044: So to be clear: you believe times have changed to now casting white characters as Latinos and therefore not bringing the characters as they were drawn to life? And you think this is going to... make people like Latino, et al, actors? Are you crazy?

@lonewolf1044: oh fun! Now do a white Mulan.... Your smug comment is exactly what’s wrong. Instead of justifying the rationale for changing the source material, (let’s be honest you know as well as everyone else it’s because, wokeness) you find it easier to tell someone “BeTtER GeT wItH tHE TiMeS” Shows your lack of critical thinking or rationale. Keep just taking in what the media feeds you. I don’t think anyone here would have an issue with an RE game out with Black lead characters. You are what’s wrong and why there is such toxicity on these issues. How about bringing something constructive to the conversation next time instead of just low key calling someone a racist or bigot

@josefo:

I don't think it was 'necessary', but it wasn't necessary to cast a white chick as Jill either. I mean, honestly does anyone actually care who plays who in these movies?

Seriously, these characters are defined more by their outfits than anything they said or did in the games. You could put that dumbass beret and shoulder pads on anyone, hell put it on a dog, we will still instantly know who it is.

@skyhighgam3r: Um Jill is defined by the stupid things she says in the first game (and to a lesser extent the RE3). It probably wouldn't have been half as funny if those lame lines had been said by a black chick. I don't know why, but I know they wouldn't have been. Can you remember any of Sheva's lines from RE4? Nope? See, proves my point. P.S. it would be equally weird casting Sheva as a white girl.

I would interested how it takes characters from the first two games, I guess we'll get Mr. X. It can't be as had as those Paul Anderson Resident Evil movies from 2000 that were decent.

@skyhighgam3r: How can a non-white person look like a preppy white boy that the Japanese artists drew? What??

Don’t get me wrong, if they’re going to powder the actor’s face to make him look white, then fine. But that just seems like it’ll attract really unnecessary controversy. They were probably best just going for a white actor who looks like a preppy suburban rookie police officer who is out of his depth.
