Resident Evil Movie Series Reboot Confirmed

The Final Chapter, but not the final story.

While the most recent Resident Evil film--aptly titled The Final Chapter--marked the end of the series for longtime director and writer Paul WS Anderson, it doesn't mean we'll never see the franchise on the big screen again. It will, however, likely take a different form.

Constantin Film, the German film company that owns the rights to series, intends to reboot the movie franchise, according to Variety. Constantin chairman Martin Moszkowicz confirmed at the Cannes Film Festival that the company is at work on a reboot , although he didn't share any details. That includes who would direct or star in future movies or whether they would somehow connect to the six existing films.

This news might come as a surprise, as the Resident Evil movies have generally been panned by critics, and this year's The Final Chapter was no different. But the movie series has earned $1.2 billion worldwide, and The Final Chapter alone grossed $312 million--the vast majority of which came from outside of the US. The lack of major success in the US is less of an issue than perhaps ever before, as foreign box-office grosses have becoming increasingly key in the movie business. A strong performance in China is likely the reason Pacific Rim is getting a sequel, for instance.

Anderson has directed four of the six live-action Resident Evil movies and written all of them. He announced well in advance of The Final Chapter's release that he intended for it to be the last movie, a sentiment that was echoed by Milla Jovovich, who has starred in all six movies. Anderson is currently at work on another film adaptation of a video game series, Monster Hunter.

Unrelated to the live-action series, several CG Resident Evil movies have been released. The next one, Vendetta, launches in June.

the premise should be a group of people stuck in a house while zombies slowly close in.

Paul WS Anderson better not have anything to do with it, he shouldn't even be allowed into the theater to watch it...

What needs to happen, imo, is they use Resident Evil 1 as a blueprint. You bring in Umbrella, the Arklay mansion, STARS, Raccoon City and the characters with some of their quirks that are already created, and you stick to the general plot and ideas already presented, have horror be the theme in the same vein as the classic Alien or the intensity of Aliens, but the actual dialogue and such can be new and fresh. You could even alter the deaths a bit for some surprises.

So you get a genuine horror film with some action and the classic story, but it can modified to fit the big screen with enough freedom to make it work. Would also lead well into Resident Evil 2/3, which already had the "escape from Raccoon City" as the theme.

That said that probably will not happen.

Everyone-do not forget that they (Constantin Film and Sony) fired George Romero because they didn't like his script! What a joke. George Romero should have directed the first one. By firing him, the movies' chances of being good were destroyed.

Why not making TV show instead and put all game stories in it. I think this could work much smoother and properly.

@Zignoff: Ehhh, I don't know about that. I think both movies and games are at their worst when the characters are talking, and I'm not sure which I'd rather inflict on myself. If they're making a new round of films, I think they can aim higher than what's come before.

Make it rated R for god's sake. I'll watch if it's good and well written. Otherwise, I don't care. Only watched the first one from the current poop and I hated it, never watched the others lol.. . Trash movies.

@kylexile: That's how much I care about the franchise. It sucks. R or not, it's corny and feels PG-13.

@cashx002: What I found ridiculous about latest movies are sliced scenes. Few frames of action then few frames of dialogue and action again. Seriously? How could you call that a movie if u barely can see details on fighting scenes (pointing at you Last Chapter!)...

Nobody asked for this...And a Monster Hunter movie too. As much as I like video games, I'm not a big fan on movies about them. It's like stripping something down to an inferior medium, usually with a crappy budget to boot.

Despite how incredibly bad the films are, I do enjoy them. But taking RE7 as a jumping off point for how the films could be shaped would be a great idea.

as long as people keep lapping up this stuff, studios will pump out cynical and shallow franchises. The RE films are adequate at best.
