Resident Evil 8: Village Confirmed During PS5 Reveal, Coming In 2021
Capcom’s legendary horror franchise is coming to the PS5, as well as Xbox One Series X and PC.
During Sony’s PS5 reveal event today, Capcom quelled Resident Evil rumors by announcing a brand-new entry in the storied franchise, called Resident Evil Village. It's headed to PlayStation 5 in 2021. The game is set in a--you guessed it--village, though we also saw several other locations, including a forest, castle, and some nearby dilapidated houses. It's confirmed that Resident Evil 7 protagonist Ethan is back, as well as that game's first-person perspective. It's Resident Evil 8, official title be damned.
The Resident Evil 8: Village trailer also gave us a look at some of the characters and monsters expected, including a werewolf-looking creature and what appears to be a witch. Resident Evil icon Chris Redfield also appeared, though it seems like he won't be playing the hero this time around.
Capcom took to the PlayStation Blog to talk a bit more about RE8: Village, where the studio confirmed the survival-horror title uses its RE Engine--most recently used on Resident Evil 7, Devil May Cry 5, and Resident Evil 3--to add life to its environments. Capcom also confirmed that Resident Evil 8: Village is a "next-gen experience," takes place a few years after the events of RE7: Biohazard, and emphasizes combat and exploration more than its predecessors. As in RE7, you'll again play as Ethan Winters, who has gone back to his normal life with his wife, Mia, following the events of that game. According to a developer video released by Capcom, Chris is "the reason Ethan's life gets turned upside-down." From the trailer, it sure looks like Chris shows up to murder Mia, which is the inciting incident that sends Ethan to the village in the first place.
The previous two Resident Evil games were Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes, both in third-person. Prior to this, Resident Evil 7 released and shifted the series to a first-person perspective.
While it was announced during Sony's PS5 event, the official Resident Evil 8: Village website states it's also coming to PC (via Steam) and Xbox Series X. It's also worth noting that the site explicitly clarifies that the 2021 release window is "tentative," meaning it's subject to change. The studio will provide another update on the game sometime this August. For now, check out some screenshots below.
